NFL Rumors: Chiefs Showing Interest In Jason Avant

It seemed inevitable this tweet would be coming, so let’s get to it.

That’s the Kansas City Star’s Terez A. Paylor with the tweet. It should be noted that if Paylor is tweeting it then it is probably a very true rumor.

Avant isn’t a sexy free agent signing but it would be a savvy and cheap one. Many will point to Avant’s lack of production in Philadelphia last season but he was always very productive in Philadelphia under Reid’s scheme. In fact Pro Football Focus had Avant rated as the 20th best receiver in the NFL in 2012. That season he averaged more yards per catch than Percy Harvin, Wes Welker, and Randall Cobb, and caught an astounding 74.6% of his targeted passes. Plus he is a great locker room presence.

The key to Avant is stability and security. He knows the offense, knows how to get open, and knows how to be a security blanket for Alex Smith. Plus, Avant is a very solid blocker in the running and screen game, which will be crucial for Jamaal Charles. There is too much here that makes sense for the Chiefs.

No he is not a big play receiver but the Chiefs cannot afford to buy a big play receiver in free agency. And any “big play” receiver the Chiefs take in the draft is probably not going to be able to contribute at a high level immediately. It generally takes time for wide receivers to develop. The more depth and quality the Chiefs can add to their receiver group, the better. Especially if Dexter McCluster is going to be gone.

Assuming the money is right, Avant makes a lot of sense for the Chiefs.

    No brainer.

  • Andy

I liked him when I first heard he was released. He is a leader, consistent, can get open, knows the offense and Reid, and can catch the ball. Our offense isn’t built around his who run fly patterns. I hope we sign him for more than one year.

    • sidibeke

Can get open AND catch the ball???!!! That’s already #2 WR material for KC.

  • Jason Seibel

Good stuff, Ben. I wouldn’t mind seeing Avant to the Chiefs at all.

  • Matt Dickson

How old is Avant? What’s his injury history?

I’m very impressed with his stats and PFF number from 2012. It would appear he could be a free agency steal for the Chiefs. Looks like he could either be a “good” #2 WR or a “great” #3, if those 2012 numbers weren’t an anomoly.

    • Matt Dickson

      Alright, the dude is 30-years-old.

That’d have something to do with him being released. That aside, based on his 2012 numbers and familiarity with Reid’s offense, I’d sign him to a 2 (maybe 3) year deal.

    Do it!

  • Stacy D. Smith

Looks like Dex is out the door so… Fine.

    • Montez K.

Looks like you and I are the only ones who realize how much DMC will be missed…..

      • micah stephenson

I will miss dex. His return ability along with his catches and yards will b missed.

    • Troy Utt

I hate to see DMC leave but also realize there is no way to pay him the money he is needing in this contract. Hester is out there as well & unless the prospective team is looking to use them more in the role of a WR in order to get their money’s worth it would be hard to justify!
Like I said… Wish we could keep him, but there’s just not enough $$ to go around this off-season…

  • sidibeke

The key is Dex being gone. We need someone who can pick up some of that production.

  • micah stephenson

Boring. Is this the best we can do? Zzzz. Wake me up when we get somebody good. Alex Smith to Fasano, Avery and Avant? Lol. Cmon DORSEY!!!

  • Dave

Sucks to see Dex gone but he in no way deserves 8 or 9 million a year.

  •'defer='defer upperturion

Dexter who? All kidding aside I like Dex, but imo he was unable to become the “Wes Welker” type that we need. Enjoyed his return gm, but he’s avg at best. Wish you luck going forward, Dexter!

  • Chris Tarrants

He would be a solid pick up but ultimately we are trading a speedy guy in for another slow one? We have Bowe, Hemmingway and maybe Avant? These are three slow guys with good hands and moves, and that’s me being polite by putting Bowe in the same sentence as good hands! Then we have Avery, fast as lighting with bricks for hands. God I hope Jenkins turns into a real WR because we ain’t got jack and it looks like we ain’t getting anything better. I’m not a GM but I question what their goal is this year? Surely R&D have some kind of plan, but I will be damned if I can figure it out

  • Jim Harper

I had no idea his completion percentage (over 75%) was so high which makes him super attractive. I was hoping for Golden Tate but he may be a little too pricey and he wants to stay in Seattle if possible and is willing to give a “small” discount to make it happen, but Seattle is operating with wage restrictions as well and they already resigned Michael Bennett to a multi-year contract

    • Troy Utt

Tate has also made it clear from the onset he was willing to take less money to stay in Seattle. So I have dismissed any & all reports/comments linking Tate to KC… (or anywhere for that matter)
To be honest Avant’s 2012 numbers do make him look to be a much better prospect, as all I had paid attention to previously were his last season & those were not great. Many things can account for that, new coach & system, new QB, the list goes on…
Looking at the big picture bringing Avant on board may not only be a good move financially but on the field as well. If he could have that type of production in KC (75% reception rate) that might be just the ticket we need in the middle of the field, as it would force the defense to cover freeing up JC for the run & Bowe down-field…
That is provided we still have an offensive line capable of holding off the wolves by the time FA’cy is over!!!

  • Stacy D. Smith

There’s one report out there that he’s visiting the Patriots today.
