Chiefs Free Agent Watch 2014: B.J. Raji Ready To Eat Kansas City BBQ?

One intriguing free agent prospect this off season is Green Bay Packers defensive lineman B.J. Raji. Scheduled to hit free agency next week, it would appear as if re-signing him is not on the top of the Pack’s priority list.

Obviously because Raji is in Green Bay, the connection is automatically made with Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey. Because Dorsey’s last gig was in the personnel department with the Packers, he had a hand in drafting Raji. The pro bowl lineman has had a good run in Green Bay racking up 10.5 sacks and an interception — with a touchdown…what? — during his first five season.

Though his natural position is playing the nose tackle, Raji has been moved around on the line to defensive end. Indications are he prefers the nose tackle position, which could be a deal breaker, considering the Chiefs have one of those already in Dontari Poe.

Still, bringing in Raji for a visit and seeing how he worked out on the line as a run-stuffing defensive end wouldn’t be a horrible idea.

What do you think, Addicts? Should the second half of the “discount double check duo” take his act to K.C.? Sound off below.

Why not!? Especially if the price is right, then I say bring him in for a visit!

  • DieHard_ChiefsFan

Why would that be a bad thing, we have discussedin multiple blogs moving Poe to D-End, but only if we had a good Nose replacement and this would lock down the middle of the line. With Poe’s speed at D-End on Tamba’s side, that would bring the heat every time. I say pull the trigger on this big boy !!

    Price would be an issue

Unless, Poe is moved to DE. Then, Raji would fit. Remember, Raji began at DE with the Packers before he and the then current NT switched positions.

Nice to have extra cash handy. The Colts have just signed D’Qwell Jackson to a four year $22 M deal with $11 M guaranteed.

Pay the man let him play NT move Poe over.Im all in on this one!

This is – no offense – the most nonsensical response I’ve read. Dontari Poe is a FORCE. He is younger, stronger, and still learning the position we drafted him so high in the first round for. Why would you move him over and hamper his development for little to no gain? I say no to Raji, I want some wideouts and a FS before we bother with pieces of our team we don’t really need right now.

      • tazer15

Regardless it’s not going to happen but I’d be all for it a run stuffing dline with Tamba and Houston sacking the QB would be huge for this team.We are not going to break the bank on a WR or FS no matter if we signed BJ or not so why not.Thats just my thoughts i don’t see us signing a big name at either position. So if we drafted a WR or FS then signed a middle of the road get the job done one or the other in FA.Id think we’d be a way better team with Raji.

  • Stacy D. Smith

Word has it that he and the Packers are close to a new deal.

  • tazer15

Just a pipe dream yes he’s prob going to stay home on a 1 year deal. Raji has been one of my favorite players for awhile just like to see him in red!

I’m kind of ambivalent with this idea. Raji was on my mock in 2009 because I thought we needed a NT with size if we were going to run a 34. Pioli didn’t see it that way and drafted Jackson, which has turned out to be his acchilies heel. Now with several other spots that need attention, I don’t know if we should spend our meager cap on him. I guess if he would come at the same price as Jackson I could see that. But we would have to move Poe over to end trade or release Jackson and I don’t know how that would work for Poe.

Raji would be a good sign. He would make it costly to double Dontari. It would allow the Chiefs to run stunts on the D-Line. BJ would likely prosper in Bob Sutton’s aggressive 3-4 system. He would also give the Chiefs depth at NT. Like Dontari, BJ would demand double teams and bring pressure on the QB on pass plays.
The Chiefs could do some things for more Cap Space. Signing Alex Smith to an extension. For 2014 Alex right now will cost 7 mil in Cap Dollars. If we sign him to a 4 year contract, with a 1.5 mil base and an 8 mil signing bonus which is spread over the length of the contract, costing the Chiefs 3.5 mil in Cap Money in 2014.
