Chiefs Free Agent Watch 2014: T.J. Ward Will Hit the Open Market

As just reported by Pro Football Talk, it now looks like talented Cleveland Browns safety T.J. Ward will not be franchised tagged and will hit the open market next week.

Ward just finished the final year of his rookie contract and will be looking to get a nice deal. While he’ll likely come a bit cheaper than the Buffalo Bills Jairus Byrd, he’ll still fetch a pretty penny on the open free agent market. Ward’s biggest downfall is he has a bit of an injury bug which bit him hard during the 2011 season, keeping him out of half of the games that year.

Still, Ward came back with a vengence last year, logging the best season of his career with 123 tackles, one and a half sacks, 2 picks, a forced fumble and 10 passes defended.

If the Chiefs could find a good deal with Ward, he would be a huge upgrade at one of their biggest positions of need in the free safety. With Ward lining up next to Chiefs star safety, Eric Berry they would defintely give the front seven time to get to the quarterback.

What do you think, Addicts? Worth a look? Sound of below.

If the price is right go for it. One of the benefits of this is that all the safety needy teams will have more quality options between FA and the draft. There is now a better chance that the Chiefs can get someone good to fill the FS spot. I’m not very comfortable seeing the Chiefs put all their eggs into the Sanders Commings basket.

I would be happy with either one. My concern is cap space, I don’t want to extend ourselves out too far like we did this previous year. Yes I have read about the cap jumping over the next two years but that’s something I wouldn’t count on as things change quickly in this league.

At five ten, he might not fit the new larger mode some say Dorsey would like to see, but, near the end of the year, he did play ILB at times. He had 2 sacks for the Browns, last year. They even played him at corner on occasion. Of course, the rumor in Cleveland is the new HC, Pettine, wants to re-unite with Bryd. But, the Plain Wrapper suggested his asking price for the Browns had been a 5 year $7 M deal with about $17 guaranteed. The Browns balked. Not elite, but, solid.

We need to pick up at least 1 safety in FA. Even if we keep Abduhla. I’m not sure if Ward is the guy. Commings has all the skills to be our starter, but with injuries in college and last year, he may not be the most durable. Whoever we have behind Commings could be the FS equivalent of McGrath: healthy and good not great. We don’t want a lineup full of glass cannons.
