2014 NFL Free Agency: Jairus Byrd Will Test Free Agency

Let the dream begin. The Buffalo Bills have chosen not use the franchise tag on Jairus Byrd and it expected Byrd will be a free agent on March 11.

It is not too surprising Byrd will be hitting free agency, but there were some rumors the Bills would use the franchise tag on him against his wishes for a second time. Now we know his is available baring a last second change of heart from Byrd.

Byrd is one of the better cover free safeties in the NFL, which should make him a hot commodity in free agency. Should the Chiefs be able to create enough room, a tandem of Byrd and Eric Berry would be one of the best in the NFL. It would fix a lot of coverage issue the Chiefs saw in the secondary in the second half of the season and would make the defense much stronger.

However, this tandem would not be cheap. Berry is in line for a big payday soon, and Byrd should command one of the top contracts handed out this off-season. To make this work John Dorsey is going to have to find a way to make some cap room over the next couple of years. This likely means saying good-bye to someone like Tamba Hali next off-season.

Is it worth it?

As I said b4 Hali is likely gone anyways next off season. But you saw how a great single high safety impacted Peyton Manning in the Super Bowl. It forced everything underneath and the seahawks were ready when they did throw it there. Byrd isnt worth 10 million a year but ill tell you what. He is worth a ton. You put him with berry and look out. If byrd was on our team last year I think we win at the very minimum 2 extra games which means home field may not have gone to denver because we would’ve beaten them at KC. Could’ve been a totally different season. Maybe a special one. I hope the chiefs works some extentions and free cap space and try to at least meet with him. In a passing league a guy who can impact the deep pass is invaluable. Especially in our division. But with the QBs we face it should be a priority. Byrd isn’t earl Thomas but he is the next best thing

Hell yes he would be worth it. Byrd is exactly what the Chiefs need to start this dynasty. a proven player, you know what your getting, now go get him Dorsey.

I wonder how much his father will play in this. His father has just become the new corner back coach for the Bucs. He was a great corner for the Bolts and is their HOF.

        Let’s hope he doesn’t like his father…..lol.
