When the announcement was made that Dorsey had sent former Chiefs second-round draft pick Javier Arenas to the Cardinals in return for a fullback, many were taken aback. After all, Arenas was the player selected with the pick received from the Atlanta Falcons in return for the services of tight end Tony Gonzalez. Arenas never lived up to his draft stock, and thus many Chiefs fans weren’t sad to see him go. But a fullback? Really? The Chiefs had just drafted a fullback — Braden Wilson — in the sixth-round of the draft, so the move didn’t make sense. Or did it?

Having a lead blocker for Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles was paramount in head coach Andy Reid’s system. With Sherman, they got that and more. PFF rated Sherman as an overall +17.3 for the season, mainly because of his blocking in the running game. He continually blew open huge holes for Charles to grab chunk gains time and time again.

Sherman was no slouch in the passing game either, giving Smith a reliable target to check down to, if needed. In fact, Sherman hauled in a couple of touchdown catches of his own.

While Sherman will never be “Tony G,” having a fullback that can break open your best offensive player and consistently catch the ball is a good thing to have.
