Chiefs Great Derrick Thomas To Be Featured On “A Football Life”

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Derrick Thomas left Chiefs Kingdom far too early, but Chiefs fans, his fans and NFL fans in general will be able to relive memories of the former Chiefs great on September, 24th. He’ll be featured on the popular NFL Network Series “A Football Life”.

If you haven’t seen the series, it’s basically an hour-long documentary on a prolific person in the NFL world. The most popular was probably the feature on Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick, but this season may end up toping that.

According to the press release from NFL communications, this season will feature LaDainian Tomlinson, Pat Summerall, Steve Sabol, Warren Sapp and Randall Cunningham among others.

This season will also have a 30 minute “A Football Life: Backstory”  program after the show, which will feature “a deeper look into the lives and story of each subject”, per the release.

Thomas was a nine time Pro Bowl linebacker for Kansas City, known for his ability to rush the passer. In 11 NFL seasons, all with the Chiefs, he totaled 126.5 sacks, 41 forced fumbles and 19 fumble recoveries. In the 1990 season, he notched 20 sacks, which is incredible. (Pro-Football-Reference.com)

Tragically, Thomas died of a heart attack in 2000, which came just weeks after he was paralyzed in a car crash. He was only 33 years old.

I can’t wait for this episode!! I was 13 when he passed away and I still get choked up watching shows or speeches about him, especially if Marty is the one talking. I was really impressed with Carl Peterson’s speech for his hall of fame induction too. I acquired two of his autographs this year and love them. #58 forever. Looking forward to this episode!

Talents like the sublime DerrickThomas do not come along all that often. During his time in the league few had his ability to take over a game as he could. Derrick, much like Joe Delany, left us and our beloved Chiefs way too soon. As Chiefs fans Derrick brightened our lives and gave us great joy and memories to cherish. I am looking forward to the joy and memories that will continue to be made by current and future Chiefs. Hail to our Chiefs of the past, present, and future.
    #GO CHIEFS!
