Chiefs’ 53-Man Roster Set…For Now

Jason Bridge-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs have made all of their cuts and for now, at least, their 53-man roster is set.

But don’t go betting this roster will be exactly the same when the Chiefs line up on opening day. There are hundreds of players losing their jobs today and some of them are likely prospects the Chiefs have had their eye on. Don’t be surprised if one or two more players are cut so the Chiefs can sign some other discarded players.

Anyway, here it is:

LT Branden Albert Donald Stephenson
LG Jeff Allen
C Rodney Hudson Eric Kush
RG Jon Asamoah
RT Eric Fisher Geoff Schwartz
TE Anthony Fasano Travis Kelce Kevin Brock

Why in the hell would Wylie make the team over Richardson? That is the one move they have made to this point that leaves me shaking my head in disbelief and bewilderment

    • Stacy D. Smith

Because Wylie is valuable to the return rotation. I predicted six WR’s would make it on Tuesday. I was right about which six it would be. #popscollar

      • berttheclock

I believe it had more to do with Special Teams. Wylie has been used as a returner and on the kickoff teams. He caught the speedy Steeler Dunn from behind for a tackle.

      • Chris Tarrants

There is no value to a guy that can’t stay healthy. Moeaki just got the ax for not staying healthy. It is what it is I guess but I really had high hopes for Rico in our rotation

    • KCMikeG

I thought Frankie or Rico would have made it over the oft injured Wylie. Frankie had shown his skills in ST’s. VERY Surprised that Commings – injured all camp – was retained over Hartman who had made the plays. Theuy must be very confident that he is healthy and much better than Hartman.

      • Brian Martasin

Why are you so surprised that they didn’t want to discard their 5th rd pick without even seeing what he’s got? Hartman is a nice player but nothing special IMO

        • KCMikeG

Just seems like a guy who showed he could do the job would get it over a guy that has only watched from the sideline. I hope he is healthy and way better than Hartman.

          • berttheclock

I, also, hope Commings comes back and shows them they did not make a mistake in picking him instead of Micah Hyde out of Iowa, who, ended up going near the bottom of that round, had a great game against the Chiefs and has made the Packers’ roster.

          • sucka tash

            no more iowa players please.

    • Jim Harper

I kind agree Chris. I thought Richardson would make the practice squad and he still might, but I also thought Hammonds outplayed Wylie the entire preseason and that includes the return rotation. Don’t get me wrong. I like Wylie a great deal, but in this case he was outplayed by Hammond. With that said I do have 100% trust in Reid & Dorsey and they know what they are doing

  • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

Paddy is right. This is just the beginning. We could see a couple of waiver pickups. I would be shocked if we didn’t.

    • KCMikeG

      Shiancoe please….

  • Nicholas Holstein

Cyrus Gray over Shaun Draughn? Not necessarily the most important topic, but I really feel like Draughn has more game experience right?

    • Dfrey87

Maybe so but Gray has shown way more in limited touches he also has way more up side.

  • berttheclock

In 2011, John Dorsey was involved with drafting D J Williams, a TE out of Arkansas. He took him in the 5th round. Williams replaced Quarless as a backup to Finley after Quarless was lost for the season. He is shorter than Brock, but, has more experience. Possible pickup as he has just been cut by GB?

    • tm1946

ESPN is not impressed wtih Williams. not idea one way or another. They say he is not very good.

  • Lyle Graversen

Well I was 3-4 players off on my prediction. I had Dixon, Hartman, and Cox on the roster plus predicted a new TE would be signed (which could still happen). I didn’t have Toribio, Martin, McDougald, or Commings.

Overall I don’t have any problems with this group, but like others have said, there will be more roster moves to come.

    • tm1946

Isn’t Commings a Reid wildcard? Injured, seemingly forever, not a clue what Reid saw since he was never on the field.

      • berttheclock

Reid has been wrong in the past. Danny Watkins, a top drafted guard has just been cut by the new regime in Philly. Plus, a year or two ago, Reid wanted a safety and took one of whom the various pundits had listed a couple of rounds lower. He didn’t work out, due to lack of speed, and Reid, not only cut him, but, apologized to the fans by saying he had made a mistake.
However, his success rate has been far far better than any miscue.

      • sucka tash

as a georgia fan, commings is a monster, you are going to like what you see when he gets on the field.

hits like a truck, good in coverage, doesnt miss tackles like kendrick “where’d he go” lewis.

  • obrien5

Am I the only one somewhat happy about this? Mcdougald made it, Hemmingway made it, Demps made it. Yes Shaun D. had flashes last year but it was a toss up over him and Gray, neither one showed more than the other. I’m OK with it.

    • KCMikeG

I’m thrilled with the guys who made it. Gray was our leading rusher in preseason. He actually out performed Draughn 95 yards vs 50 (4.1 vs 2.9 YPC) and Davis (95 yards vs 59 and 4.1 vs 2.5). He has huge potential and I so glad R&D saw that in him. Guys that made plays made the team except Hartman vs Commings. Hope he’s way better than Hartman and is healthy.

      • berttheclock

Aren’t Gray’s blocking skills better, as well?

        • KCMikeG

Yes, much faster too, he has huge upside! I love the highlight reel. Sick cuts/change of direction with break away speed. If healthy this kids has great potential.

  • obrien5

I really feel Hemingway will be a starting receiver on this team, the kid doesn’t drop balls, I’m a Notre Dame fan and remember him catching everything against ND. I think he will shine.

  • berttheclock

I do believe there are going to be some very interesting practice squads around the league next week.

  • Jim Harper

When will the practice squad be announced?

    • berttheclock

I’m not sure, but, did you see where the Texans kept 4 UDFAs? Funny thing is going into the draft, it would appear that the “pundits” have covered just about every player in the land, yet, every year, look at the number of players who go undrafted making rosters.

      • Jim Harper

Just goes to show you how little many of the pundits really know. I have also been skeptical of how much real knowledge guys like Kiper really have. I am suspicious that they get paid by agents or somebody to put the names out there and draw attention to who they want to see drafted, and the way Kiper Jr wears his hair pretty much confirms to me that he is with organized crime. Only a made guy would do that!

  • chiefridgy

Look who is listed as number one punt returner and kick returner. DMC.

    • KCMikeG

With the much improved ST blocking I predict he will score multiple times winning games for us! The foolish hack that was spreading the Dex is unhappy & wants to be traded crap deserves to be shown the door. Reid wanted to draft Dex and has been vocal in his excitement with being able to use him all over the field. Look at what he did at Ole Miss when McNutt arrived and utilized him effectively. He will be the breakout player of the year.

  • berttheclock

One point about A J Jefferson. Several have written he was kept due to the fear of dead money from a cut. Look at San Diego. They will have to absorb $5 million of guaranteed money to Meachem, of whom, they have just cut. A J would cost the Chiefs, what, $1.7 Mill and change if he does not work out?

    • KCMikeG

Jenkins. Wonder what we could get Meachem for?

      • tm1946

        To use an old saying.
If meachem is the answer, what was the qestion? multi million dollar mistake by SD.

        • KCMikeG

Agreed but that’s my question couldn’t we get him at a garage sale price now?

          • Danny W

I would be searching his agent out right now like mad. He was pretty good when he played down in NO.

  • berttheclock

I hope they told Rico Richardson, “Please, Rico, don’t lose our number”.
