Chiefs vs. Packers: Live Thread for Preseason Game No. 4

There are 79, 451 seats at New Arrowhead Stadium. Every home game, Chiefs faithful fill the stands to be part of the “home game” experience. They hi-five with fellow fans when it goes right and console each other when it goes wrong. For the rest of us not in attendance, we do it virtually. Here. Welcome to the Kansas City Chiefs Live Game Thread.

This is it, Addicts. We have finally reached the final preseason game. All 32 NFL teams will be playing tonight to give everyone time off before the season officially kicks off next week.

As has been said in several other threads, chances of having an Alex Smith, Jamaal Charles or Dwayne Bowe sighting is slim to none, but the game could get interesting nonetheless. It seems to me when players “on the bubble” are faced with the prospect of losing their spot or making the team, they play just a little bit harder. That’s exactly where we are, right now. 16 players on the Chiefs’ team face exactly that situation.

That could make for some pretty engaging football.

I look forward to discussing it with you.

The final preseason game starts…now!

Welcome to the Live Thread!

    For what it’s worth…..

Here’s the battles that I think are still in play tonight that I’ll be watching:

Draughn vs. Gray – I think Draughn has the upper hand and is more reliable, but Gray has more upside.

Wylie vs. Richardson – I want Rico to make the team, but they aren’t keeping three small WRs in McCluster, Wylie, and Richardson. I think for Rico to make it he’d have to leapfrog Wylie and may need to show he’s a special teams factor.

Brock vs. Harris – the undrafted former BB player has gotten all the hype, but Brock has seen more
action lately. With Moeaki hurt, one will probably make the opening day roster.

Toribio vs Lane vs Dixon – I think Poe, Jackson, Devito, Bailey, and Powe are all locks. I can’t see them keeping all three of the others, possibly only one of them.

Hartman vs McDougald vs Cox – I have Flowers, Smith, Robinson, Berry, Lewis, Demps, Abdullah, and Brown all making it. I think they will take one more DB and these three are the finalists.

    • Chris Tarrants

I’d take Hartman over Brown but that’s just my opinion. Rico has waaaay more potential than Wylie and like you I’m pulling for him

      • Brian Martasin

I see Rico going to the PS and Hemmingway part of the 53. Wylie is likely gone.

        • Chris Tarrants

If Richardson goes to the practice squad he will be picked up quickly

          • Tony Parker

based off of what? if another team grabs him, they have to put him on their roster. do u really think he has shown that much?

          • Chris Tarrants

He has shown that he had hands and blazing speed! If you think the other gm’s haven’t seen that also than you are naive

          • Tony Parker

no need for the naïve bs Chris. I was asking because I have not gotten to see any preseason games because of where I live. was just wandering what u were seeing out of him. He would have to be pretty good to be grabbed off of the PR. Good for him, if he is as you say its a good problem for the Chiefs to have. Love it.

          • Chris Tarrants

Fair enough , I thought you were being condescending my apologies. Yes we have ample WR quality, whoever we cut will not stick to the practice squad without getting claimed be it Wylie, Hammond, or Richardson which is a huge advantage that Dorsey brings with his keen eye for young talent

          • Brian Martasin

You sure about that? What has he put on film to make him so desirable ?

  • Chris Tarrants

They are playing there 1 squad on the oline! This should test our boys on 2 d line but so far so good

  • Patrick Allen

Still not sold on Chase Daniel. Man alive that was a terrible pass.

    • Chris Tarrants

It was but it was to Jenkins and those two cant have much if any chemistry yet, chalk that up to experience

  • Chiefswatch

I have not seen anything to make me confident Chase is a quality backup. If Smith goes down so does our season.

    • Chris Tarrants

He played well enough last week and keep in mind he really hasn’t been able to play behind the starting line in a game, give him the confidence that he isn’t going to get his head ripped off on his 3rd step and he will hold his own

  • Patrick Allen

    Excited to see Jenkins.

  • Chiefswatch

one turnover turns him into a pussy.

  • Patrick Allen

Sounds like thee are more Packers fans than Chiefs fans. Pathetic…

  • Lyle Graversen

I actually really like our defensive depth everywhere except CB.

    • ladner morse

      I’m concerned about CB too.

  • Chris Tarrants

If he wasn’t already done Hammond jr just lost his job

  • Patrick Allen

he Chiefs are never going to have good depth until they have a regime around for longer than three years. Sure there are some talented starters but to build a team like the Packers, Steelers and Patriots, you need need the same coach/Gm combo just constantly getting the right players for their system.

    • Patrick Allen

Right now they are trying to make a bunch of square pegs fit in round holes. It takes time to build an organization.

  • Patrick Allen

Another terrible throw. He has to deliver that ball.

    • Chiefswatch

He cant, those throws look like they have zero power behind them. He throws like he is playing catch with his son.

  • Jason Seibel

At least the D is stout!

  • Chiefswatch

Did Vince young just get cut?

    • Patrick Allen

      ZOMBO!

      • Jason Seibel

        Love him!

  • Chiefswatch

    Man do I like Zombo

  • Jason Seibel

Wylie is out? Is that what he just said?

  • Patrick Allen

What kind of QB do you guys think is better for your primary backup?

A young guy with a ton of upside that should be an eventual starter (like Bray) or a journeyman veteran who is nothing more than a game manager. (like Daniel, Huard)

    • Chiefswatch

The safe bet is the game manager, we just need a better one. I am not form Missouri and have never though much of him

    • Jason Seibel

      I like Bray

    • Elton Wilson

I like whomever can get rid of the ball after 3-4 seconds

      • Chiefswatch

        rofl

    • stephan costa

      Bray 4sure

  • Elton Wilson

I tried to get it going at the Chiefs Steelers game, but I’m hoping that Arrowhead can continue my ‘Colquitt Bomaye’ chant with the ball in his hands. Also nice awareness by Zombo to get that pick

  • Jason Seibel

    Come on!

  • Patrick Allen

Sorry fellas, but it’s official. Daniel is a scrub.

    • Chiefswatch

      lol so true

  • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

I just made it home to see Chase take two horrible sacks. Did I miss anything else?

    • berttheclock

Green Bay feels they stole Micah Hyde from Iowa very low in the 5th round.

    • Chiefswatch

yea you missed pass #1 being a horrrible interception

  • Chiefswatch

is it time to give up on moeki?

    • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

I am afraid so. My guess is he goes to IR and they give him another camp to prove himself. I don’t think we can count on him anymore. I am a big fan of his, so it pains me to say that.

  • Chris Tarrants

I seriously feel like I’m watching the local jv squad play a scrimmage

  • Chris Tarrants

Hopefully there are some good players getting cut this week

  • Chiefswatch

    wylie is a goner

  • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

    what happened to wylie?

    • Chiefswatch

      hamstring

      • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

Bad injury or just a tweak?

        • Chiefswatch

they havent said but it seems minor; doesnt matter he will be cut

  • Chiefswatch

At the very least Bray can see over the center

  • Chiefswatch

only Chase can make a catch-able pass look like complete shit

    • Patrick Allen

      Wounded duck.

  • Chiefswatch

Doesn’t appear there will be any redemption for Jenkins. He looks worse than Baldwin

  • Chiefswatch

Hard for the receivers to adjust to these non pansy throws

  • Elton Wilson

I really hope Gray stays on the roster.

    • Chiefswatch

Yea I am not sure he isn’t better than Davis. Not like Davis’ 2.8 per is tearing it up

  • ladner morse

I’ll take Gray over Draughn. I think there’s more upside.

    • berttheclock

Meanwhile, Jackie Battle is 10 for 38 yards with the Titans.
Pioli tried out both Draughn and William Powell and kept Draughn. Powell lasted awhile with the Cardinals, but, has been cut. Pioli should have kept “Asta”, instead.

  • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

Bray does pass the eye test in the pocket

    • Patrick Allen

      Heck of an arm, too.

      • Elton Wilson

That thing is a howitzer cannon

  • Patrick Allen

Wylie might be done for. If the Chiefs decide they want to keep Jenkins…Wylie may not have done enough.

    • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

I don’t see the Chiefs cutting Jenkins

    • Chiefswatch

They cant cut him with what they are paying him. Dexter already does what Wylie does and better and Hemmnigway has looked better than Wylie too. The writing is on the wall

  • Chiefswatch

No question the kid has great upside, and he certainly looks better than Daniel in this game

  • Steve Trombly

damn i hope Hemmingway makes the team…. anyone else?

    • Chiefswatch

      he will

    • Patrick Allen

Yeah I think he makes it too.

  • Patrick Allen

    Bray > Daniel

    • Jim Harper

      He definitely was tonight!

  • Steve Trombly

    whoopwhoop! bray to hemmingway!

    • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

I want to see Bray air one out to Rico

      • Steve Trombly

yeah im liking what i see out of bray for the #3 … he seems to be the gunslinger type… high velocity… but what about his accuracy with them deep passes?

  • Chiefswatch

WOW he is making Daniel look like a punk

    • Patrick Allen

      It isn’t even close.

    • Chris Tarrants

I like Daniel, but it is looking more and more like its just my home town pride given what he did a Mizzou, but Bray is looking like a stud who can be molded into a serious qb

  • berttheclock

    Great drive.

  • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

Memo to Chase….. those footsteps you hear are Tyler’s.

  • berttheclock

Mr Dorsey did quite a bit of homework putting together his class of UFAs.

  • stephan costa

Nice 2 minute drill run by Tyler there

    • berttheclock

Including his 13 yard run for a 1st down.

      • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

        was that a run?

        • berttheclock

Hey, I’m “watching” it on Fox Sports online. I tried ESPN, but, they were too slow.

          • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

it was more a shamble than a run

          • berttheclock

Thanks, but, at least, he did move the chains.

          • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

That he did and I heard them creak on his run

  • Chris Tarrants

Wait a couple of years with learning from Smith and Reid, Bray could be a bad mofo. He is doing what we have been waiting for for years

    • stephan costa

Much better than Geno with the #1 pick. Very happy with the way the braintrust is putting this squad together

      • Chris Tarrants

He is what Croyle was supposed to be

      • Jim Harper

        Ditto

  • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

Bray could be the kind of QB who pops up in year 3 or 4 and looks elite. he has that kind of talent.

  • Patrick Allen

Is it me or was that a really long first half?

    • ladner morse

Tell me what you’ve had to drink first…

  • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

I love hearing john dorsey talk.

  • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

That;s what I want to see. Bray throw a nice, crisp slant pass

  • ladner morse

Tebow throws 52 yard TD pass.
    5 yard pass.
    47 yard run.
    Oh that Tebow magic.

  • ladner morse

Best I’ve seen 2nd or 3rd teams look in years.

  • ladner morse

Uh oh… does that save Bellamy’s skin and sink Hemingway?

    • Lyle Graversen

No way, Hemingway has gotten snaps with the ones, Bellamy is running 3rd/4th string.

      • ladner morse

        Plus.. the defender fell down…

        • Lyle Graversen

Yup, and I’ve seen Hemingway out there with the first string special teams as well. I think Bowe, Avery, McCluster, Hemingway, and Jenkins are on, it’s the 6th spot that is up for grabs.

          • ladner morse

And I have been wondering who Dorsey will scavenge from another team on Cut Down day.

          • tm1946

TE will be one. QB will not.

  • Lyle Graversen

I don’t care how bad he interviewed, how did Tyler Bray and that natural throwing ability go undrafted?

    • ladner morse

Exactly. But lets keep him humble and hidden for awhile.

    • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

Because he has a ten cent head, immature.

      • Patrick Allen

I remember hearing he just wasn’t bright. Your QB needs to be one of the smartest players on the field..at least when it comes to football smarts.

      • Lyle Graversen

Okay, maybe so, but go look at some of the players taken in the 7th round. You’re telling me none of those teams would be better off with a 1st round talent arm/10 cent head QB to try and work with then the scrub they drafted?

  • Jason Seibel

    Tyler Bray = KC QBOTF

  • Jason Seibel

    Damn I love our D!

  • Patrick Allen

Does anyone else think Bray looks very awkward coming out of snaps? Reminds me of Bernie Kosar.

    • Lyle Graversen

Yeah, he’s not graceful at all.

      • Jim Harper

More like Big Ben in all respects!

    • ladner morse

      More like Bernie Madoff

  • Lyle Graversen

I think if Tyler Bray ever becomes a starting NFL QB, his first year starting will be one of those 25 TD, 20 INT seasons.

    • ladner morse

Then again… knowing what Reid can do for a QBs value as a trade piece… maybe Bray will ultimately be worth some high draft picks…

      • Chris Tarrants

Uh oh, the chiefs find a diamond in the rough and people are throwing around the trade him stuff? Come on I have waited 29 years to get a qb that isn’t a castoff.

  • Jason Seibel

    Really?

  • tm1946

Our subs against theirs, not bad at all.
Do not see the answers I was looking for at WRs, when the games count. Also we are running out of TEs, may need to look at the waiver wire for an old pro with one more year left in him.

    • Jason Seibel

I think they need to look at Vishanthe Shiancoe.

      • Chris Tarrants

That would be awesome but could we fit him under the cap?

  • Lyle Graversen

Nick Jacobs had a good point on twitter, said GB has a logjam at TE, with Dorsey’s familiarity with their roster and our TE injuries, I could see us snapping up someone they cut. Especially with how they’re getting a first hand look tonight.

    • Jason Seibel

      Great point

    • berttheclock

Earlier in the week, ESPN (Bill Williamson) was reporting GB was trying to shop Brian Bostick. The GB Press Gazette, this AM, had written that GB has 7 TEs and will only end up with 4 or 5. They have carried 5 in the past, but, that was when Finley had a contract year up at the end of the season.

  • tm1946

Someone lit a fire under Gray, may have saved his career in KC

    • Lyle Graversen

By far the best he’s looked. I thought Draughn had him beat, but he’s putting up a fight tonight.

  • Lyle Graversen

Succop is money in the bank this preseason, hope it carries over.

    • tm1946

To mental, seem to remember Vermeil stayed as far away from kickers as the NFL would allow. Marty had similar feelings?

  • Lyle Graversen

We’re now at the point where the announcers are analyzing the hats that players are wearing on the sideline. Man, I can’t wait for the regular season.

  • Lyle Graversen

He was 5 yards away from KC having a return of 50+ yards in all 4 preseason games. Dave Toub, take a bow.

    • ladner morse

Toub is the man. It’s amazing what he’s done with the Chiefs special teams. Amazing.

  • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

Hammond is having quite a game. It’s going to be hard for him to stick though.

  • Jason Seibel

    So close to breakin one!

  • ladner morse

    I loves me some Cyrus

  • Lyle Graversen

Anybody payed attention to how Gray pass protects? I know Draughn is pretty solid and that has earned him some playing time, but Gray looks like such a better runner.

  • Lyle Graversen

I shudder to think what the fan base would be like if Smith went down and KC played Daniel and left Bray on the bench. People would FLIP out.

    • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

they would. Bray is playing against 3-4 stringers and Chase went against 2nds

      • Patrick Allen

Bray still looks better. Better arm. Better pocket awareness. He is making this Chiefs unit look way better than they are.

    • ladner morse

Yea… how’d you think that one up?
      Made me laugh……

    • ladner morse

It’s so cool to have a QB on the bench who we’re excited about.

      • Chris Tarrants

Just think about this kid after a year of learning and dialing everything in. It’s scary to think that we could have a real qb that came from here. Watching him throw reminds me of Farve in almost every way!

  • ladner morse

I don’t care if it is preseason… 30 points!!!!! Man that feels gud!

    • Chris Tarrants

Yeah it’s all meaningless but you couldn’t beat the smile off my face with a ball bat

      • ladner morse

Chris… you win the AA comic response award. lol
You had a comment the other day that had me laughing for quite awhile.
        Thanks dude!

        • Chris Tarrants

          I’m taking my bow

    • Jason Seibel

My wife just told me to enjoy it because I won’t see that score again all year. I think she’s drunk.

  • ladner morse

When’s the last time any of you smiled during the whole second half of a Chiefs game?

  • Patrick Allen

When Daniel was getting sacked, it was because the o-line was terrible. Bray out there with the same or worse scrubs? All he does is throw TDs. (and one pick)

    • Chris Tarrants

That pick shouldn’t be on h tho it was in the receivers hands, he has to fight for it

      • Patrick Allen

Wasn’t his best throw but that is ok. He’s a young kid. The good has outweighed the bad, for sure.

      • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

That pick was on Tyler. The ball was underthrown and the GB DB was in the best position.

      • Lyle Graversen

I’m as encouraged by Bray as anyone, but that ball was under thrown. Trent even commented that Bray has to lead the WR to his back shoulder on that throw.

    • ladner morse

      I’m impressed for sure.

  • berttheclock

Ah, c’mon Chiefs – Please try to beat the 66-24, the Chiefs put up against the Bears on August 23, 1967. Please?

  • Lyle Graversen

Well boys and girls, the next time KC takes the field it will be REAL FOOTBALL!!!!!!

    • berttheclock

Geez, you mean I have to send off for my new Chiefs visor, license plate holders and tote bag to start this new season? I decided not to opt for Direct TV as I want to spend watching the games with other fans of the Chiefs at D’s Bar in Portland. So, I must have that new visor. Lost my other one when we moved a month ago and I left it in a U-Haul truck. It really looked as bad as Haley’s, but, I wore it proudly.

  • Elton Wilson

Even though Brown got picked on all game, it was an all round good showing by the defense.

  • Arrowhead Magic

The funny thing is that even if Bray does become our franchise QB somewhere down the line and I believe he will. We will have still have never drafted our own franchise QB because Bray went undrafted lol.

    • Jim Harper

      Now that is nit picking

      • Arrowhead Magic

I have no problem with it, I personally am on the Alex Smith bandwagon and took no issue with us trading for him and not drafting a QB. But I know somebody will complain about it down the line.

        • Jim Harper

I understand. That is why I put lol at the end. I was making a joke. But you are right that someone will complain for real.
