Chiefs Ranked As 21st Best NFL Fan Base

We all know the Kansas City Chiefs have some of the best, most loyal fans in the NFL but a recent study by two students from Emory University’s Sports Marketing Analytics program would disagree.

The students just released an in-depth study in which they think they have cracked the code on which NFL teams have the best fan bases.

And KC came in at #21.

Here is the list:

1. Dallas Cowboys

2. New England Patriots

3. New York Jets

4. New Orleans Saints

5. New York Giants

6. Indianapolis Colts

7. Chicago Bears

8. Baltimore Ravens

9. Pittsburgh Steelers

10. Tennessee Titans

11. San Diego Chargers

12. Denver Broncos

13. Washington Redskins

14. Green Bay Packers

15. Carolina Panthers

16. Houston Texans

17. Philadelphia Eagles

18. Minnesota Vikings

19. Cincinnati Bengals

20. Cleveland Browns

21. Kansas City Chiefs

22. St. Louis Rams

23. Seattle Seahawks

24. Buffalo Bills

25. Miami Dolphins

26. San Francisco 49ers

27. Jacksonville Jaguars

28. Detroit Lions

29. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

30. Arizona Cardinals

31. Atlanta Falcons

32. Oakland Raiders

Here is a brief explanation:

In our series of fan base analyses across leagues, we adjust for these complicating factors using a revenue premium model of fan equity. The key idea is that we look at team box office revenues relative to team on-field success, market population, stadium capacity, median income and other factors. The first step in our procedure involves the creation of a statistical model that predicts box office revenue as a function of the aforementioned variables. We then compare actual revenues to the revenues predicted by the model. Teams with relatively stronger fan support will have revenues that exceed the predicted values, and teams that under perform have relatively less supportive fan bases. We provide more details on the method here and here.

I am not even sure why they keep doing these studies. I think most NFL fans are pretty terrific. Some teams have more fans than others but there are all kinds of factors that effect that.

What do you think, Addicts? Is tis study bogus?

They need to realize that it’s not just about ticket sales. The chiefs fan base spans the country as a whole so just because people can’t make it to the game shouldn’t be a reason to say the chiefs are 21 in the league. These idiots need to learn what a fan base really is. It’s not just tickets that are being sold. It’s going to an area like Philly and still finding chiefs fans and people who are die hard no matter what the season brings. When you can go somewhere in kc on Sunday during the fall and there’s nobody out cause they’re watching the game at home now that’s the number 1 fan base in the NFL

On the one hand I’m mad they gave us 21st insulting… Truly insulting buuuuut they did get it right those stupid raider fans are the worst no doubt

  • Jordan

Oh and the weather has been too fair in San Diego and Denver for 11th and 12th place is also stupid

Chiefs fans are by far one of the top 5. The top 2 are mostly ‘bandwagon’ fans. #4 makes sense cuz the New Orleans like KC has a strong LOCAL FAN BASE. 3 and 5 don’t even play in New York. Kansas City fans are the most loyal dedicated fans alive. And they KNOW HOW TO TAILGATE!!!

Fan base rankings based on revenue? Stupid.

  • Priest4Prez

This study is worthless; you know who I’d listen too? The guy who went stadium to stadium before and during the games. My first time at Arrowhead was last year and I know there’s no other place like it. The pregame atmosphere alone is enough to give you butterflies. We’re top ten fan base, every other fan knows this.

I call Bull S**t!! We are loyal fans and even the announcers always comment on how we are one of the top ranked and how dedicated we are!!

  • Stacy D. Smith

I knew it had to be taking success into consideration. The reputation of Chiefs Kingdom is known around the NFL. Has been for over 20 years. #shrugs

  • Jason

It’s based off revenue which doesn’t account for #bandwagoners
