Chiefs Re-Sign Thomas Gafford

The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed long snapper Thomas Gafford.

From Aaron Wilson:

Absolutely brilliant signing. It may not seem like it now but it is.

Remember when the Chiefs got rid of Lawrence Tynes and drafted Justin Medlock? I remember thinking it didn’t seem like a big deal. Tynes was ok but he wasn’t great. The Chiefs were getting a new, young kicker. I knew the Chiefs needed a kicker because Herm Edwards was the coach and Herm Edwards being the coach meant that the Chiefs wouldn’t be scoring a lot of touchdowns.

Remember the kicker nightmare the Chiefs went through after that?

Remember former Chiefs center Rudy Niswanger? Remember when Rudy was hiking balls twenty to thirty feet above Matt Cassel’s head?

A long snapper, like a reliable and serviceable kicker or center, is extremely valuable. You only hear about these guys when they mess up and when was the last time you heard the announcers talk about Thomas Gafford?

Exactly.

No doubt buddy, underrated but more valuable than people realize!

    • Chief Hokie

Isn’t that the definition of underrated? Lol

  • Danny W

Damn! I can long snap a mean ball I mean like 40 yards on a string, I could snap the ball to the moon for almost seven figs a year.

    • Michael Shaw

DW I am sure there is still time for you to try out and unseat him as the long snapper!!! LOL!!!

      • Danny W

        Thanks man.

Great idea Michael! In May there will be a walk on try out day for any players who played high school or college ball in Missouri or Kansas? Better get in there Danny. Let us know so we can start promoting you to Coach Reid.

But the tough part is to snap it on a string when you know a 290lb brute is going to just crush you.

  • Tom Sparks

    Very good commentary, Pat!
A shakey LS can be a fly in the ointment! And who thought great LS’s could become a very capable news corresponder. Like Kendall Gammon, our best LS and loyal Chiefs Fan, for example……… He was awesome!

  • berttheclock

Not having a backup LS cost the Raiders a win, recently. For some reason, no other player had been properly prepared to step in for their injured LS and a gimme turned into fumble.
But, the real icing on the cake is when you draft a LS and find out he is far better being a pass rusher, such as Jared Allen.

That’s good pay for only playing an average of 6 snaps a game. I wonder what the average career length is for a long snapper?

  • Stacy D. Smith

Can’t recall a bad snap from Gafford. He’s cut from that Kendall Gammon cloth. Good re-sign.
