The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed long snapper Thomas Gafford.

From Aaron Wilson:

Absolutely brilliant signing. It may not seem like it now but it is.

Remember when the Chiefs got rid of Lawrence Tynes and drafted Justin Medlock? I remember thinking it didn’t seem like a big deal. Tynes was ok but he wasn’t great. The Chiefs were getting a new, young kicker. I knew the Chiefs needed a kicker because Herm Edwards was the coach and Herm Edwards being the coach meant that the Chiefs wouldn’t be scoring a lot of touchdowns.

Remember the kicker nightmare the Chiefs went through after that?

Remember former Chiefs center Rudy Niswanger? Remember when Rudy was hiking balls twenty to thirty feet above Matt Cassel’s head?

A long snapper, like a reliable and serviceable kicker or center, is extremely valuable. You only hear about these guys when they mess up and when was the last time you heard the announcers talk about Thomas Gafford?

Exactly.
