Sean Smith, Chiefs Contract Details

The Kansas City Chiefs took a trip to the free agent market today and decided to pick up CB Sean Smith.

Now we’re finding out how much he cost.

According to Jason Cole, of Yahoo! Sports, the deal is for three years with $11 million guaranteed.

$18 million, eh? That is exactly what the Chiefs gave Stanford Routt last offseason. Though Routt’s deal only has $6 million in guarantees.

Hopefully this signing will work out better than Routt’s.

The Chiefs also signed former Atlanta Falcon’s CB Dunta Robinson. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Robinson’s deal was three-years and is worth $15 million. He is reportedly getting only $4 million in guarantees and his contract is backloaded with a low cap hit.

That makes it sound like the plan is for Smith to start opposite Brandon Flowers.

What do you think, Addicts? Did the Chiefs pay too much for their new #2 corner or did they get it just right?

Wow. He got a cheaper deal than Derek Cox. That’s a good contract. They had to sacrifice something, so they wound up guaranteeing more than half of the deal.

We have to really take our hats off to Mr. Clark Hunt, he was not just saying that he was sick for how last year went, He meant it, Now we as fans have to show up and make Arrowhead the loudest and proudest stadium in the NFL,again. Thank you Mr. Hunt.!!!!!!

      • Stacy D. Smith

But, but… Clark is cheap! He doesn’t care about winning!

Actually that was Nerd Clark Hunt. THIS Clark Hunt parts his hair on the LEFT side, not the right. It’s how you can tell he’s a rebel.

          Ooops!

I would say they got it just right.

Payed like a #1 now play like it! Seems like he got wore the heck out by the end of last year. Hope our #3 improves.

Have you seen Brandon Flowers paycheck? How about Brandon Carrs? He is paid like an average #2 corner… not even a top tier number 2. A #1 gets 9 or 10 mill a year, he got 6.

    • Danny W

Flowers got 50 some million brother. This doesn’t even get close.

Move robinson to FS and we are set Go CHiefsssssssssss

  • ArrowFan

If anything I say they under paid.

I wonder what Javier Arenas is thinking right now.

    • gjrchief

Probably that most corners look like chumps against wes welker, and when lined up against him, he made welker look like the young and inexperienced one. He has improved as a corner, and welker has lost a step since their last meeting. He has an important role in this secondary. Smiths height and skill can shut down Thomas, Flowers can eat Decker alive, and Javier has proved he is more than up tp the task of eliminating welker from a game. Ill take eric berry and dunta robinson/kendrick lewis over joel dressen and jacob tamme. I like how we match up with denver, and Javy is a huge part of that.

well said. flowers described him as the pitbull in the slot in an interview today. love what he brings in run support and blitz packages, too.

  • toperspective

Alright. Can check off CB as area of need resolved.

  • njjohn

Got the WR, CB, DT and I suspect the OT will be coming in April. Chief brass has done a great, great job so far.

    • Jim Harper

      Don’t forget QB!

  • sidibeke

Not too much if we can keep everyone we have on the roster now. Think FA can be done; RT and ILB (and #3 QB ?) in the draft. Feeling pretty good so far.

    • Jim Harper

If they decide to draft a QB then they would have to release Stanzi which would be no big deal. Probably give us another ten bucks in cap space.

I think it was a great move

  • Danny W

That’s a lot of guaranteed dollar but not terrible for a solid number two. Hopefully we have trouble keeping him in a few years because he’s demanding number one bread.

  • Billie Cabral

He’s played average but still an upgrade to what we finished with and had for the most of last year. Average pay also average’s it out. Luckily in the CB catagory the market wasn’t in super high demand so we got a fair deal. He could develop into a force or of course he could go backwards. Now Chase Daniels and “Guido” Devito yup I said it first lol is a different story. I also think getting Alex Smith was HUGE. Who else could we get that can bring an impact like him???

  • NicholasAlanClayton

At 25, he’s the youngest player the Chiefs have signed so far and was one of the most coveted guys at his position. I’m really psyched about our new loaded roster and glad it’s not all veterans in the second half of their careers. Good vibes all around. He had 12 passes defended in 2012 — more than any other player in the Chiefs backfield (including resent signings) other than Brandon Flowers, who had 13.
