Grade Chase Daniel To The Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have two new QBs to replace former starters Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn.

The San Francisco 49ers have confirmed that they have traded Alex Smith to the Chiefs for two draft picks. It is believed that since the draft picks KC sent are high that Smith will take over as the starter for the foreseeable future.

But KC didn’t stop there. We heard earlier that new GM John Dorsey was targeting former New Orleans Saints QB Chase Daniel. Then shortly after free agency began, it was reported that the Chiefs and Daniel agreed to a three-year contract.

It looks like the Chiefs are hoping for Daniel to slide into the backup role behind Smith. Cassel is expected to be traded or more likely, released. Ricky Stanzi is still on the roster but the Chiefs haven’t made any indications whether or not they have any plans for the former Iowa Hawkeye.

The arrival of Daniel could call into question whether or not the Chiefs will use any draft picks on a QB in the 2013 NFL Draft. If KC does take a QB, we can probably assume that Stanzi will be on his way out.

Time to get out your red pens, Addicts. We knew the Chiefs needed to completely rebuild their QB depth chart. It looks like Chase Daniel is a part of their plans.

I give the deal a C. I don’t dislike the deal but Daniel is too much of an unknown for me to be terribly excited about him being the team’s backup in 2013. I would like the Chiefs to still draft a QB this year so they have a guy they are developing.

Grade Chase Daniel signing.

The problem is that the available QB depth is non-existent. I rather have Daniels than most of the other stiffs that were available. Need to have an adequate BU…hopefully Daniels fits the bill.

I would have preferred Jason Campbell….. at least has some experience and knows wjat it is to be a starter. When Alex goes down with an injury, I’m gonna be very nervous to have someone with basically no experience become our STARTING QB !

I am a Mizzou fan through and through, and I cannot see why everyone is so happy about this move aside from the logo he wore in college. He had one good year in a conference with no defenses aside from one team (which tore him apart both times he went up against them), sucked eggs the next year and brought the whole team down around him because of it, went undrafted, has done absolutely nothing in New Orleans, but now I’m supposed to be excited? For what? A player that, best case scenario will never ever see the field outside of garbage time? Or am I supposed to have this false hope that he will somehow have a major role on this team? Please.

Edward I absolutely agree! I think ticket sales were a driving force here. I still want a QB in the draft.

I like Daniels, stong arm, decent ceiling…would like to see more of a dynamic QB than Smith or Daniels, but i think we have potential with these guys.

A back-up is needed…but Daniel? bah. I hope Dorsey knows what he’s doing.

  • Jake

Daniels is our third stringer guys, Stanzi is gone, and we will draft smith’s backup. My belief, or hope

    • Larry Devore

      ya mean KC’s keeping Cassel?

      3mil for a 3rd stringer? Lol

3mil for a 3rd stringer? HIGHLY doubtful. Chase will be a backup

  • Jarad

Daniel has no s in it. Future reference for some people

I give the new Chiefs leadership a grade of A with Chase Daniels. Here are the reasons why:

1- He played very well in every instance in NO. He was a great game manager with little to no turnovers. This in mostly preseason games but also in regular season games. Showed great passing skills and ability to make the right reads. He is relatively short but many other high performing QB’s are currently, and have been in the past, very successful when partnered with a coaching staff that is offense and pass oriented in particular like Reid and staff.

2- He learned how to play QB at the NFL level with expectations of consistently high and performance under the tutelage of Sean Payton and Drew Brees. He was the back up to a sure HOF QB on a team that had expectations of going to and winning the SB every year that he achieved status of back up QB…not 3rd or 4th string.

3- I trust Sean Payton’s judgement and coaching ability as evidenced by the fall off of his team when he was not there coaching. Chase was his pick to potentially lead his team to a SB in the absence of the HOF starting QB ahead of him.

    4- See #1, #2, and #3.

5- Chiefs will draft a QB for the future in 2nd round. This kid will be handed a SB contending team by EITHER Daniel or Smith in 1-2 years, depending upon which ever one is the starter at that point based on injury or performance. He has learned how to win at the SB level, along with Smith and the combination of that in the QB meetings with a young QB will be very valuable and beneficial.

These are the reason why it was a genius move and will be seen as such when the time comes for him to play in the starting role.

But yet Sean Peyton doesn’t want to re-sign him for a measly 3 mil a year? It’s always good to have dreams “Chiefs will draft a QB for the future in 2nd round. This kid will be handed a SB contending team by EITHER Daniel or Smith in 1-2 years, depending upon which ever one is the starter at that point based on injury or performance. He has learned how to win at the SB level” but eventually you need to come back to reality.

Daniels would have never started in New Orleans. HE CHOSE TO LEAVE because he see’s that he may have a chance to start in KC. Why do you think people have to always be at the mercy of someone else in ownership/mgmt? A new coach with a long record of winning and an offense that has lots of talent and a defense with a bunch of pro bowlers made this deal work for Daniel and the Chiefs and that is why it is an “A” in my book.. STOP HATING!!!!!!

        • superman_25_58

Not hating like I said further down……..I’m not saying he is a bad player but just haven’t seen enough of him to think he is the next coming of Drew Brees! I’m sorry I think different than you, but I will say it’s an A if they can prove “worthy” of wearing the Red and Gold on the field IMO.

    • mattU

KC has tried the “backup of a sure-fire HOF QB” line of logic many times before: Bono, Grbac, Cassel all come to mind. Bottom line is, the teams that consistently go to the playoffs and win SBs do it with QBs that they drafted themselves: and normally in the 1st round. Apparently the Chiefs organization has been blind to this for nearly 30 years, regardless the regime in power.

  • superman_25_58

It’s funny how a Backup QB that hasn’t proven anything in the NFL is graded at a B by most of this franchises fans.

    • Danny W

I put the move of getting him at a C. I think he was a hot commodity of late with other teams, so they all must see something. He’s had some solid preseason performances.

      • superman_25_58

That’s what I graded it t as well. I mean the dude has only attempted 9 passes n the NFL is what I thought I saw/heard somewhere. I’m not saying he is a bad player but just haven’t seen enough of him to think he is the next coming of Drew Brees but has to be way better than anything we have on the roster in all seriousness now.

  • Daniel Mayfield

He’s a backup from 1 of the best, Drew Brees. I’m not jumping up and down, clapping my hands. I don’t know the guy or how good he is but I’m sure he’s better then Quinn. Alex Smith and Chase Daniel or Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn? I’ll go for the 1st 2, Smith and Daniel. Cassel and Quinn couldn’t get anything going. Go for the new guys!

  • Danny W

I have to say it’s aggressive. I mean the new brass is not passive in the slightest bit. Which is an okay sign being that their not going all Oakland or Redskins on us or anything but making plenty of moves. This team was 2-14 for a reason.

  • Nfl chief

I think you have to trust in Andy Reid . Look at what he did with aj feeley,Kevin kolb, nick foles. Made all of those qbs look good. It’s more about the system, and I’m happy with chase, as long as its no longer cassel, or Quinn .

  • mattU

I really liked everything the Chiefs did today except this move.
This could be a B grade at $800K-1Mil/year, but if the $3Mil/year number is accurate, this is lunacy. He’s taken what 9 snaps in regular season games? How does anything he’s done merit $3mil/year? I’d much rather have Landry Jones on the team with our 3rd round compensatory than this guy…he’d at least come cheap. Chase Daniel doesn’t have a rocket arm or anything of note to hang his hat on (4.92 40, 6′ even, 9.25″ hands) other than accuracy in Mizzou’s spread offense. It looks like he has baby hands holding that football. Is Todd Reesing available? Maybe they can bring him in as 3rd stringer and blow $1mil/year on him to get the KU fans in the door.

  • Joe Myers

    05-08 chase Daniel collage QB rt 100.7 , 145.1 , 147.9 , 159.4 . 68.0% comp . 101-41 t/int . 148.9 over all QB rt . And he’s been behind brees his NFL career maybe Reid and Dorsey are on to something !!!!!! .

  • Ron

I like the threesome of Smith, Daniels, and Tanney. I still want to see what he (Tanney) can do on the field.
