Chiefs To Sign Chase Daniel

According to multiple reports, including Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a deal with former New Orleans Saints QB Chase Daniel.

From Twitter:

It looks like the Chiefs may have themselves a backup QB.

We heard that KC might go after Daniel earlier today. Here is some background.

Daniel played his college ball at Missouri and was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the football team in Washington. He is currently a backup for the New Orleans Saints.

Daniel was waived by the Redskins and then landed in New Orleans. He was on and off the roster for a while before spending last season as Drew Brees’ primary backup.

Daniel threw one regular season pass last year that went for ten yards. In his career, Daniels is 7 of 9 passing for 55 yards.

I dont know about this. I dont know alot about the guy.

    • sporaticdamage

I used to watch him play for Missouri in his college days and hoped the Chiefs would pick him up. My wish came true. Better late than never….plus he has had a good mentor in New Orleans.

    Yawn

  • Chris Tarrants

I watched him play several games in college, he really is a good QB he just needed time to adjust to the nfl. He made Jeremy Maclin a household name in Missouri

    • Doug McD

Not sure here, we may just be selling tickets. I’m still not sold on his height at the QB position. Yea, I know Brees is short too. I’ll give it time to play out. I still want a QB in the draft.

      • Chris Tarrants

I still want to draft our guy too but I have a soft spot for hometown guys and I would rather have him as our back up for pennies than Cassel for millions

        • Doug McD

I wouldn’t call 3mil pennies. No chance we are keeping Cassel with his current contract. Hometown is good only if we win. I think Reid got him for backup only / plus ticket sales. I don’t see us getting anything for him after a couple of years in compensation/trade value because of his height, unlike someone Reid could mentor from the draft. I would prefer us drafting someone that Reid could mentor and trade for value later.

      • berttheclock

Have you ever checked the height of Russell Wilson?

        • Doug McD

Sorry, I am of the belief that this will get solved next year after the DC’s have a chance to plan for him. Pocket passers are here to stay. When you don’t have one you have to do something.

  • Brody Hall

GOOD SIGN! Built just like drew brease and learned from him for a few years now. MIZ!

    • micah stephenson

Bad signing. Cassel learned from Tom Brady for some yrs and you see where that got us.

      • jesse

cassel.was a backup even.in college and played on.kickoff. daniel was a starter who won and made maclin a first rounder. duh. solid backup if anything.

      • Chris Tarrants

Cassel was fine for two years then for no apparent reason forgot how to play at the pro level

        • micah stephenson

I wonder if coaching had anything to do with that? If you stick Cassel on the 49s, he will start to look like Alex Smith. You stick Alex Smith on the Chiefs and he will look like Cassel. Lol.

  • steve james

I am liking the signing. I am sure he will push Stanzi. Hope to see him in camp.

  • ladner morse

There are a few rare QBs who are short but good…. I think Daniels has a chance to be counted in that class. Learning behind Brees has to be nothing but good news for Chiefs fans.

  • chiefridgy

Thank God. So long sand cassel!

    • chiefridgy

      Sorry Cassel lovers!

  • Johnny Ubben

I’m fairly new to following football in earnest. But.. who? I imagine this means we will be using him to back up Smith and cut Cassell. Probably eliminates us picking up a QB as a back up from the draft also.

    • Guest

Chase Daniel is solid. You may need to research just a bit. He is a better option than taking a college player high in the draft.

      • micah stephenson

Are you trying to say an undrafted QB who is 7 of 9 with 55 yards passing is a better option than draftin a QB high? Im glad you aint in charge. Lol

        • jesse

At least he won in college. And has nfl experience behind brees. been to the playoffs and superbowl. doesnt matter if he didnt play, he has experienced the emotions. solid backup.

          • micah stephenson

Uh Tim Tebow won in College, has started and won a playoff game, it doesnt mean he is good. Id rather them draft a rookie to Back up or beat out Alex Smith.

    • Guest

      Say what?

  • oldchiefsfan

I don’t know enough about the guy to know whether I like it or not.

  • Matt Dickson

Good move as potential, future trade bait.

Other than the Saints, nobody else has had a real close look at Daniel. So if the Chiefs can coach him up and get some quality, Sunday game tape with him then they may be able to deal him for picks at a later date.

He’s also likely the kinda QB who’ll look good in a Reid coached offense.

  • Justin Jones

welcome back to Missouri Chase! show us what brees taught u!

  • Jim Harper

I like this signing. The kid has demonstrated he has a lot of heart and determination.
Going on and off the roster like that is tough. Plus I am sure he has learned alot from Brees. Another solid move. Now on top of that we address TE and get Fasano. Reid and Dorsey continue to amaze me.

  • Stacy D. Smith

The guy’s had some really good preseason performances. He’s also had a chance to learn behind one of the very best in the league. I have nothing bad to say about this.

  • jesse

learned under brees. had success in college. helped make maclin a first rounder. very good signing

  • Troy Utt

Must admit I am impressed, the boys @ 1 Arrowhead put together a plan and have executed! We may not have understood… but they are most definitely making for the better! They roll off Red Monday, and follow with Daniel, Fassano, & the new DE! Surely the cap has got to tapped now until the draft? The multitudes of moves today have really surprised me!

    • berttheclock

Yeah, there were no Blue Laws in effect, this past Sunday at One Arrowhead.

      • Troy Utt

Evidentially not! All these moves really did catch me off guard! I was just on site this morning asking about a salary cap update, and then later in the day we get all of these announcements! I’m liken’ the moves, just waiting to see what we have to do (cuts / other restructure) prior to the draft! Obviously Cassel is gone…just a matter of whether or not we can fanagle a draft pick out of the situation?

  • micah stephenson

For a fan base that hated Cassel, im suprised at how easily the fans are satified with QBs like Alex Smith and Daniels. Is it becuase after having nothing @ QB, just having a lil something looks so much better? Honestly im shocked at how the fans are seeming happy with any ol QB they bring in. Looks like as long as his name aint Cassel its a good signing. Im startin to think if the Chiefs signed Tim Tebow, the fans would b like yea Good signing!

    • chiefridgy

There’s not a lot of options out there right now for QB…..

    • Danny W

Hey I’m not overly impressed but I’m optimistic. Kind of like with Cassel when we got him, I’m not saying any of these guys can shoulder this team to the dance or anything but it seems they’re trying to put the pieces around them to make them winners. I’d rather have Geno Smith.

      • micah stephenson

I just hate that we will win 7 or 8 games and b picking 16th and looking at the 3rd or 4th best QB in the draft next yr when we finally had a chance to get the best guy but past it up.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=584720048 Oscar Fernandez

I really dont know a thing about Daniel, but something tells me he is way better than Quinn or Cassel

    • Danny W

He’s got an accurate arm especially in intermediate routes. He doesn’t have the biggest arm in the world but his short game will kill you.

  • Ronny

Pretty sure his last college game he lost at the hands of Ricky Stanza. I may b wrong
