Chiefs NFL Free Agency 2013: Open Thread

In just under an hour the Kansas City Chiefs will officially be able to play in the NFL’s free agent market.

We’re still waiting on the final details of the Alex Smith trade. Those could emerge rather quickly.

Also, Glenn Dorsey has still not been re-signed, so far as we know. Will KC get the deal done under the wire, much like they did with Dwayne Bowe ahead of the franchise tag deadline? Or will Dorsey hit the free agent market?

The Chiefs once singed a fella by the name of Priest Holmes in free agency. will they find another breakout start this time around?

Keep an eye on the AA main page and use this thread to discuss all the action and rumors throughout the evening.

don’t know if to laugh at video or start rocking to it….very confused

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

It is pretty awesome. Those guys are good.

      • Spencer

i love the sound and I must admit is sounded awesome…it’s just their facial expressions of which confuse me and make me want to laugh at the same time of rocking to it lol….+1 for the video

      • Da Menace

Yes they are good pick up Patrick! Some talented boys there.

        • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

I wish I could learn to play an instrument. Learning guitar right now and it’s tough.

          • Da Menace

Ha! I play the bass guitar, and yes it is. Wait till u actually have to keep time through a whole song! Or playlist for that matter..
            Sent from my iPod

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

You can’t hear that song and not feel fired up. At least I can’t.

      • chiefridgy

        It got me fired up

  • Jason Seibel

This is so much more exciting than work!

  • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Interested to see if anything happens with Matt Cassel as well. Hoping we can get the Vikings to trade us a few old boxes of Mac and Cheese for him.

    • Jason Seibel

If Anquan Boldin is only worth a 6th rounder, what does that make Matt worth? A pair of Justin Bieber tickets and an old toothbrush?

      • t_tyrance

Haha hell he might not even b worth that

    • toperspective

I’d be pleasantly shocked if we received something of value for him. Why would anyone was a 7M backup? And why would he agree to restructure as opposed to becoming a FA? Hope I’m missing something.

      • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Yeah that is the problem. If his contract was lower he might go for something but you’d have to be sure you were going to start him for that much coin.

        • Stacy D. Smith

Re-structure the deal, then trade him. #problemsolved

          • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

I think that only happens if Cassel knows he is going somewhere #1 he wants to be and #2 he has a legit chance to start.

Otherwise why not hit the market and guarantee he gets to choose. Has to move his family and all that.

          • Stacy D. Smith

He definitely holds all the cards. He doesn’t have to agree to re-structure. It’s not like anyone’s going to beat the Chiefs’ door down for him though. I’ll bet if they approach him the right way, he’d agree to re-structure for a chance to go elsewhere.

          • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Probably wise for the Chiefs to wait for the lex Smith deal to be verified before the move on Cassel.

          • Stacy D. Smith

Of course. I just figured that was a formality.

          • toperspective

What is the deadline for the Chiefs to cut him? Can they use the threat of holding on to him until most roster spots are filled before they cut him loose?

          • Stacy D. Smith

They can cut Cassel at any time. If that truly is the plan, it’ll happen soon. They’ll want the cap relief.

  • Sarah Thomas

Counting the minutes…I am soooooo excited this year!

  • Richard Comstock

one expert on nfl.com predicts us to land greg jenning. that was kind of out of nowhere! any reason to believe this? I don’t see the reason for us to spend big dollars on him.

    • Jason Seibel

Other than he’s a really great receiver that is a YAC stud!

    • toperspective

That would be a surprise unless he comes pretty cheap.

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Probably just because of the John Dorsey connection. It is possible but it depends on how much KC has to spend on WR

  • Jason Seibel

35 minutes left. Any bold predictions?

  • Jake

Sean Smith or DRC? Who would you rather us get? Go

    • Michael Shaw

DRC hands down. But I would rather have Asamoah.

      • Jake

Sean Smith will work for me!!!! Love it

  • Stacy D. Smith

I’m honestly not expecting the Chiefs to do much today. Is that weird?

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

I don’t expect a ton of big moves.

Here is what I want to see:

      1. Sean Smith
      2. Alex Smith goes through with details
      3. Glenn Dorsey
      4 Chris Canty

I could deal if #3 happens and #4 doesn’t. Would be a sold day IMO.

      • Stacy D. Smith

I honestly don’t want Smith at this point. I think that four-team race is going to drive up his asking price. Chris Houston would be a better and cheaper option.

You think the Chiefs will re-sign Dorsey AND bring Canty in?

        • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

On Canty and Dorsey, depends on the deals.

I would take Smith. I love his size and he is really young. Lock down our corners for the future.

          • Stacy D. Smith

Smith is hit-and-miss. He’ll go three games and look like a true #1 cornerback and then be pedestrian in the following two. Houston is probably the best defender on that Lions D (not named Suh). I’ll be we could nab him for $2m fewer dollars per.

          • Spencer

best thing about him??? his Size and ability to move positions in his later years and if our starting safty (KEndrick LEwis) gets hurt, if he gets hurt we could see (although unlikely) Smith move to Safty then that great Depth move of Ribinson comes in, he goes to #2 cb, Arenas comes back ( a good slot corner IMO) and we still aren’t looking half bad…the possibility with bigger CBs are endless IMO^^

    • toperspective

You’re probably right. Dorsey and Reid have conditioned us to except activity. Plus they do have cap room and they seem to believe they can win now. They already have an offer on the table for Canty. I guess it depends on what happens with Dorsey, Canty and Cassel.

  • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Pioli is live on NFLN now.

    • Stacy D. Smith

Lucky bastard. You screw this organization over for four years then land on your feet at the NFL Network studios? I was kinda hoping he’d be eating out of garbage cans by now.

      • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

        lol. Like Oscar the Grouch.

        • Stacy D. Smith

I was watching NFLN videos earlier and there he was with that @#$%-eating grin chirping about overvalued free agents.

      • toperspective

        yep, no justice.

      • toperspective

plus Hunt is still paying him big bucks

    • chiefridgy

      Fing hate that guy

    • Jim Harper

Yeah. I’ve had it on all day. He sucks at that too!

  • Stacy D. Smith

Albert Breer reported that Kansas City will sign TE Anthony Fasano today.

    • toperspective

      That’s pretty underwhelming

      • Stacy D. Smith

Fasano’s pretty solid. He’s no Jason Witten, but he’s a guy who doesn’t miss games. He’s about as durable a tight end as you’ll find. He’s also good for about 400 yards and a handful of TD’s every year. Lastly, they probably got him for next-to-nothing. Not a bad signing, if true.

  • Jason Seibel

Chase Daniel to KC and Matt Cassel to TB or MIN according to Daniel Jerimiah.

  • Stacy D. Smith

Asomugha expected to be released today.

    • Jason Seibel

      They just released him.

      • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

I dont think Andy Reid makes that mistake again.

        • Michael Shaw

I said it before the ONLY mistake was trying to make him play as a zone CB and not as his true position of a Lockdown or shutdown CB. He is a Man to man guy that was asked to play something he never did much in college or with the Raiders.

  • oldchiefsfan

If we are so gullible as to take other teams backups for a 2nd round pick then I would hope there would be someone gullible enough to take our backup for a 4th or 5th.

  • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

    Anthony Fasssano

  • Spencer

also side note, could the Jets trade Revis, then sign Asamough???

  • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

    Chiefs sign Fassano.

  • chiefridgy

Defensive tackle Davito signs with Chiefs

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

      Confirmed?

      • chiefridgy

I thought they had said signed but I guess not

  • toperspective

Bills release Fitzpatrick. Maybe they’d like Cassel.

  • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

So much going on. Chiefs expected to sign DE Mike DeVito from NY.

  • Ben

I WANT TURNER ON OUR SQUAD!!!
    GO CHIEFS!!!

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

I like Turner. I’d take him if it was cheap.

    • Chris Tarrants

That would make a nasty combo of thunder and lightning

  • Chris Tarrants

How funny would it be if we found out that the Alex Smith deal was just smoke and mirrors and we are gonna draft Geno and keep our 2nd rounder? That would make my day!i know it’s not the case but wow would that turn Espn on its head or what

    • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

It doesnt involve Tim Tebow so idk how much ESPN would care but that would of been pretty funny.

  • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Alex Smith is officially a Chief.

    • toperspective

Any word on the conditional pick?

  • http://www.facebook.com/jordanmpollock Jordan Pollock

Dorsey is visiting 49ers per Adam Schefter

  • http://www.facebook.com/jordanmpollock Jordan Pollock

Chiefs get QB Chase Daniel on 3-year deal! Per Adam Schefter!

  • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen
    • toperspective

Wonder what this means for the draft. Will they take a developmental QB within the 1st 3 rounds?

      • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

No they wont. Probably a late round pick. Someone like Renfree.

  • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Wouldnt it be great if we could steal DRC from the Broncos also.

  • redchiefs

Hey, rumors being that the Raiders, Cardinals, and Bills want Geno Smith, Buffalo Bills releasing Fitzpatrick, does that mean the #1 pick in the draft is now a very hot commodity for trades? Here’s what I’m thinking, swap with Bills the first rounders, get Bills 2nd round pick, Draft Dee Milliner, use 2nd round pick for a RT? Sign Jennings from GB opposite of Bowe, that about fixes most problems for starters except the ILB

    • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

I hear the Eagles are high on Geno Smith as well. Its seeming like more and more of a possibility that we will trade down. I see us trading down and selecting the best tackle on the board.

      • redchiefs

HAHAHAHA, even better, throw another team into the Geno Smith pot, Now I’m thinking swapping 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd, maybe swapping 1sts this yea, their 2nd, and a 1st or 2nd next year

        • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Id be happy swapping picks with the eagles then also getting a 2nd and a 7th from the eagles.

    • Chris Tarrants

Great plan but people need to stop counting out Andy Studebacker! The man isn’t a slouch he just isn’t a household name

    • Michael Shaw

I like the idea of trading with Buffalo, but I am almost positive that Dee Milliner would go to Detroit at 5, so that possibility is likely not going to work. However, if we did that trade down, then I would be happy with getting Ogletree, Lane Johnson, Chance Warmack or even Tavon Austin at #7!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Reports that Broncos are talking with Wes Welkers people. Terrible news. Manning doesnt need another weapon.

    • toperspective

Yeah, that wouldn’t be good. Manning and Welker would be a sick combo.

      • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Manning with Welker, Decker, and Thomas would be scary.

        • toperspective

That would have to be among the best in the league. Better beef up our secondary. Revis and Nnamdi anyone? ;)

          • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Neither. Dorsey not giving up any more draft picks for Revis and Reid isnt gonna make the Nnamdi mistake again. Sean Smith or DRC much more likely.

          • toperspective

I was kidding. I would want either due to the high cost. A team would have to be crazy to trade for Revis considering he’s coming off an acl tear and he is going to want to sign a new contract prior to the season.

          • Michael Shaw

Nhamdi wasn’t the mistake. The defense he was asked to play in was the mistake. They guy is a beast as a Man to Man, stuff them at the line type of corner. He is NOT suited to play a zone defense!! Put him on our team and I GUARANTEE you that Sutton will get him back to playing as a shut down corner!!!!!

          • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Too many CB from the market for them to target Nhamdi. Sean Smith and DRC are the likely candidates. I liked Nhamdi in Oakland and I agree he was misused in Philly but he would have to take a big pay cut for the Chiefs to even consider him.

  • redchiefs

Ok all you CHIEFS FANS! Andy Reid runs a pretty pure West Coast offense.. Alex Smith isn’t Cool Joe, but he is pretty accurate. Bowe isn’t Jerry Rice yet, but he sure does break tackles and gets YAC. He needs a Fred Taylor opposite of him, Greg Jennings (PLEASE Mr Dorsey). Jamaal Charles is a FASTER Roger Craig and is excellent up the middle as well as Craig ever was (Too bad Hillis fumbles, he could sure been the Tom Rathman other wise), if you think about it, Moeaki is probably more athletic than Dallas Clark (but a Moeaki / Fasano should be just as effective)
If the Chiefs can trade back a couple spots, I’m guessing they could draft Dee Milliner for CB, use the 2nd round from the trade for a RT

    • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

I like the idea but the other way around. Trade back and take a OT then use the 2nd from the trade on a CB.

  • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Cardinals release Karlos Dansby. Wonder if the Chiefs will show any interest.

    • Michael Shaw

I wanted him before he signed with them. I doubt they do though.

      • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

I doubt it as well but with John Dorsey behind the helm nothing will surprise me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Mike DeVito signs a three-yr, $12.6M deal with KC. ($4.2M signing bonus,
$850k ’13 base salary fully GTD, 1M of ’14 base injury guaranteed).

    • Michael Shaw

I have never heard of this guy. Is this too much for him?

      • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Slightly overpaid maybe but nothing crazy. This is what you have to do to get your guy early in free agency. Its a good signing and will replace Glenn Dorsey.

  • dfrey1987

So I have been at work all day it seems we have done all right but we need to draft a qb since we have our backup and our stop gap. So is there any word if we are having anyone else come in for visits?

    • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Nothing yet but I expect the CB market to really heat up soon.

      • dfrey1987

I would really like to see us pick up a cb, wr, rt, and a rb like Bradshaw. If we release Cassel we would have the cap room.

  • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Raiders announced they released WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, DB Michael Huff and DE David Tollefson; and re-signed DB Phillip Adams. per Adam Schefter

    • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

This adds to the already stacked list of DBs.

    • Michael Shaw

I would go after Heyward-Bey and let him, Bowe and “maybe” Baldwin rip opposing defenses. I think huff is a safety and I don’t think we would need him now with Dunta?!

      • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Heyward-Bey has some of the worst hands of any WR im not interested in making him my second receiver. As far as a slot goes I would rather McCluster play that role.

  • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

How is everyone feeling so far?

    • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

Give me a CB and I will be a happy man.

      • http://www.facebook.com/AmericanWolfx Michael Tavis

A Cassel trade would be a cherry on top.

  • KCtitleist11

i never saw anything else today. Whats the word on Sean Smith?
