Chiefs High On Alex Smith, Luke Joeckel, According To Report

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Kansas City Chiefs are high on both 49ers QB Alex Smith and Texas A&M LT prospect Luke Joeckel.

Reporting from the NFL Combine, Rapoport said details of the Chiefs’ thinking are beginign to leak out.

1) The Kansas City Chiefs like Alex Smith, Luke Joeckel. The Chiefs are in the full evaluation mode of the entire organization, with general manager John Dorsey still in the process of figuring out the team he has. But word is starting to leak of their interest in the San Francisco 49ers’ backup quarterback. At this point, based on what I’m hearing, Kansas City has shown more interest than anyone else in dealing for a quarterback who could step in and start from Day 1 while the rest of the franchise is rebuilt.

Apparently, the Chiefs are also high on Joeckel, the Texas A&M offensive tackle. If they’re planning to take him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, they could let Branden Albert — their own stellar left tackle — walk in free agency, where he’ll get a ton of interest. We’ll know all of this before April’s draft. If Albert becomes available, the Chiefs will have tipped their hand.

This fits the narrative that we have been hearing for a while now. The Chiefs have seemed to shy away from talking about selecting a QB #1 and have been beating the “best player available” drum. If KC leaves the Combine still high on Joeckel then LT Branden Albert could be on his way out of town.

If Rapoport’s report is true and the Chiefs don’t change their thinking soon, we may get a pretty clear idea of the team’s 2013 plans long before the NFL Draft. If the Chiefs trade a high pick for Smith and allow Albert to leave in free agency then the chances of the team selecting anyone other than Joeckel with the No.1 pick will be extremely low.

What do you think of all this, Addicts?

Very interesting, but, one caveat about Ian Rapoport. Last week, he wrote a column about the combine being one large gossip session. Lots and lots of trial balloons floating around Indy at the moment.
But, one point about Albert. He has back problems. Consider he has recently been rated as the 13th best NFL LT and he has those pesky back spasms. His agent may understand some GM will offer him big bucks, but, why should it be the Chiefs. Draft Joeckel and let him turn into Mr Hyde on Sundays. Of course, this will not please the Geno crowd, but, his missing wide open receivers going deep during last season still does not offset his hitting his closer ones. Yes, he did put up big numbers against very weak competition, so, don’t let his 40 speed overwhelm you, as he really does not like to be a running QB.

    • Timothy Dittemore

But they are selecting a guy we already have now (LT). How does that make the team better? Another retread that did good for a season (Smith)? Come on let’s start are own dynasty with our own players and get that Geno. Not worth the #1 but worth the #7 to AZ where he will be going if we don’t get him. I think all this talk is smoke and they want someone who loves Joeckel to step in and give them some picks for the #1. Geno is our man.

      • Jarad

Drafting a LT instead of signing Albert would be better financially. Might allow them to ink Bowe and possibly a FA or 2. And who’s to say that Dorsey/Reid dont have plans to take a QB at 34 to go along with Smith. Just a thought. My scouting takes place from my couch , so…….. In Reid I Trust!

        • Chris Tarrants

Screw that! We all did that last time and our trust was abused. I say this time they have to earn our trust and not make blatenly stupid moves

          • GDL40

Exactly !…. why trust someone who hasnt done anything for the team? we all did that with idiot Pioli, everybody was so happy and excited when he came in, and left us in a worse situation then we were before he stepped in. I will NOT trust either of them ever if they trade a high pick for Alex, and draft a LT. And I will NOT PURCHASE ANY MORE CHIEFS GEAR !!

          • ivan

i agree completely no more retreads if reid is so damn good in developing a qb geno smith has all the tools to teach him. if reid is such a great coach he will taylor his offensive scheme around him . if reid is simply looking for mr.boring ass west coach then he will lose.

          • Jarad

Just so everyone knows, Priest Holmes, Marcus Allen, Trent Green were so called retreads. They worked out ok.

          • Chris Tarrants

Yep they all worked for what an average of 3 years? We need someone who will be a 10 year franchise player

          • Jarad

Just sounds like too many Chiefs fans are booty hurt and have trust issues. People are so damn thirsty for that “franchise” QB that they cant see anything else. Face it, you don’t know more than the coach or GM.

          • GDL40

Not “booty hurt” at all…… we dont know how this will play out, but if it plays out like that, then EVERY real Chiefs fan has the right to be super pissed at the “genious” coach and GM
Dont need to be very smart to know that giving up a 2nd or 3rd draft pick for A. Smith and drafting a LT with our 1st overall pick is THROWING AWAY. TWO VERY VALUABLE PICKS !!

          • Jarad

If its a 2nd, i totally agree. I hope its a 3rd and id like Albert to be signed or franchised. BUT, if he goes , Joek will be cheaper and they can draft a QB with #34 or find a way to trade back up. Who knows, they might like a Nassib or other and pair that with Alex Smith to let the best man win. I get where youre coming from though. Crazy off season already

          • superman_25_58

Were just thirsty for the best Qb talent in the draft to suit up behind center and we now have the power to do just that, and people wanna use the #1 pick on Joeckell? This pick doesn’t really upgrade the LT position and would be a waste of the number one pick in the draft. Draft the BEST QB in the draft, Geno Smith!

          • Jarad

Yea, im with ya. Just playing devils advocate a little. Geno would definitely give this franchise an adrenaline shot. Something to get excited about. And it would be nice to give our punt team a break here and there. There are just too many questions yet to be answered to start calling anything but Geno a stupid pick.

          • superman_25_58

Their are always many questions that need to be answered from every QB at this stage of any draft process. Pro Days will help, but I think if they sign Albert, Go to Geno’s Pro Day and give Geno a private workout, than their is no doubt in my mind Geno will be the #1 pick.

          • Jarad

How is any of that “blatantly” stupid?? You must know a lot more than the ones getting paid to scout these players.

          • Chris Tarrants

I would call starting a qb who just lost his job because he was nothing but mediocre who be blatenly stupid! It’s the same thing we did 4 years ago and how did that work out? It’s time we draft a real qb and bring him in as our guy, not a retread

        • superman_25_58

We have enough cap space we can Sign Bowe, Tag Albert, Sign Colquitt and wouldn’t be hurt at all financially with as much Cap space we have.

      • jimfromkcj

Tim what they see is what I have been saying to deaf ears. The chiefs just don’t have the talent that a lot of fans think they do. We need a lot of upgrades. There are only three players on the Chiefs roster that I wouldn’t want to replace and they are Charles Houston and Johnson. Now all the Berry supporters can howl all they want, But he and Jackson are sorry 1st rd picks. Poe remains to be seen, but I am not too high on him so far. When a LT is rated as #13 and wants top 5 money, it is time to dig in your heels and the same goes for Bowe.

        • Chris Tarrants

Ummm no!? I woul keep Hali, Houston, Johnson, berry, and poe! Poe made loads of improvement last year even with clowns coaching him. On offense I would keep Albert, bowe, Charles, dexter and Wylie! Don’t forget we have a sleeper wr in junior Hemingway who was well hidden on the practice squad last season. They called him big play Hemingway for a reason. Our team isn’t nearly as bad as we looked last year

          • GDL40

            What about Flowers?

          • john

Of course, as well as Colquitt, Succop, Lewis, Winston, Moeaki and I forget his name right now, the freak on special teams, in fact he’s the Captain.

          • Chris Tarrants

yes sorry forgot flowers, but my point was made we have a good team we just need a good qb not an Alex smith

        • Timothy Dittemore

I agree the talent isn’t as great as people think but replacing a guy that us already proven with a guy that us suppose to be better cuz everyone says he is isn’t a good idea. It’s inevitable that we have to pay our good players big money some day so why not nite and see if we can get a franchise QB. He isn’t going to take us to Super Bowl next season but if season pass tells usanything perhaps in 4 years he might. I can tell you this Jockel won’t take you anywhere

        • Justin

Geno is the guy we should take why a lt when we have one that has proven himselfanybody could be a bust nd we can’t always draft guys nd nt think ur goin to have to pay them big if they end up living up to there expectations that’s why it’s professional sports pay bowe nd Albert nd then draft geno cuz he looked good today at the combine nd he’s proven that he’s good nd nt everyone has a good game every week

    • KCMikeG

How many WR’s did he miss at 71% completion percentage? RGIII had no where near the body of work and played against some of the worst D’s in the country – many of which Geno played against too. Plus he did it for 4 years in a row.
The Rapoport report is full of if’s and or’s and assumptions all based on the misinformation being spread. I have been concerned about Albert’s back too but he passed his physical last week with flying colors. If we have any concern there then we can franchise tag him to make sure. It isn’t like there won’t be another LT as good as Joeckel next year in the draft or FA if Albert has issues. Stephenson is developing too. LT is NOT where we need to use our #1 pick.

If we are such chicken shit wussies that we won’t take a chance on Geno to fill the biggest, gapping hole of a need we have at QB with his 4 years of increasingly good stats, better than ALL of the top QB picks this year and last, while playing on a crappy team then we should draft CB Milliner or DT Sharrif Flyod if we let Dorsey & Jackson go.

Best case is we are building up Joeckel as our #1 pick so someone will trade up and we could take one of these three picks at #4 – #10. The Bears at #20 are desperate for OL and we have a relationship with Emery? If we got their 2014 #1 and a #2 this year we could get Warmack, Long, Fluker, Johnson or Jones to strengthen our OL with their #20 pick. That would leave us with Foles or Smith FA QB and Glennon, Wilson or Jones at #2. I would rather get Foles and wait until the 4th round to get EJ Manuel and take two of the following: CB Rhodes, WR Patterson, TE Eifert or WR Bailey with our #2′s.

      • berttheclock

Good points as you usually provide. However, a couple of rebuttals. First as to Stephenson, he is very weak. In fact, just after he was mistakenly taken by Pioli, the first word out on him was he needed to spend at least a year in the weight room to increase his srength. By virtue of injuries, he had to play where, as a result of of games, he has been rated as the 26th best LT in the NFL. He is still a project. Joeckel, on the other hand looks as though he will transition to the NFL and be able to play better than Albert, who, may have passed his physical, but, once, back problems begin with any offensive lineman, it is really difficult to continue long term.
The second point is about that 71% rate. Yes, even Warner was impressed by that on the NFL Network show, but, those two wide open misses downfield which Billick displayed spoke volumes about warning bells. His receivers were wide open heading for the end zone and his passes were not even close to them and he was not pressured. One can amass a great deal of completions in the short passing game, but, why has Geno disappeared in big games? I am not really impressed how he played against Kansas, Baylor, Marshall or James Madison. Sister Isabella could have set records against such, especially, against KU. However, I really like the receivers he had.

        • john

Yep, yes and yep again. The Big East is not the SEC. Look at what happened to Manti when he played a real football team. That’s what I’m afraid will happen to Geno Smith when he jumps from the Big East to the NFL, without even a stop against Alabama.

          • superman_25_58

Geno Smith had 2 NFL caliber slot receivers on offense to throw to. Yes these guys are good but they are not #1 nor #2 NFL caliber WR’s by no means, no running game, and had a 100+ ranked D, that gave up 38 PPG. Geno still performed well above average with 42TD’s/6INT’s, and the best thing about him is he got better every year, which means he can learn and retain information like a sponge, considering he played in three different styles of offense. News flash you put Rodgers, Manning, Brady, Flacco, RG3, R Wilson, Luck, Kaepernic, Ryan, and etc….. in the same situation Geno was in at WVU and bet the results this year would be eeery similar with all the Qb;s on this list.

          • KCMikeG

So how were all of the non SEC QB’s able to become NFL QB’s? The Big 12 isn’t the SEC yet that’s where RGIII earned his elite draft status.

        • KCMikeG

Agreed Stephenson is a project and as I noted there was development even though he was forced into a starting role a year ahead of schedule.

Agreed on concerns with Albert’s back which is why I propose we tag him to see what happens with it this year. Healthy = pay him long term. Not = see ya.

Trading the unknown for our known with our #1 pick is worse than taking a chance on a QB. Even if Joeckel was better or as good as the already proven Albert what would we have gained – Albert had ONE sack, 4 hits and 12 hurries and was blocking on the side we had the best running success (Charles 7.9 ypc/6.1 ypc) even though teams loaded the box on us because our passing was so weak. How much better could Joeckel be than that? Certainly not worth a #1, the loss of QB or CB at that pick, which are much bigger needs and the loss of Albert.

Agreed a couple of the factors you mentioned regarding Geno’s 71% rate – the short pass/YAC and that he had a couple really good receivers. All the more reason for us to draft him #1 as that is exactly what Reid is looking for in a QB – quick & accurate. See the link in my earlier post that describes what Reid wants from his QB and tell me why Geno isn’t the perfect fit. Yes he needs to work on his footwork and some deep ball accuracy but those can be fine tuned. The deep isn’t what drives the WC offense but hitting the receiver in stride that allows the YAC is his specialty.

      • Chris Tarrants

Now that I agree with I just don’t agree with Joeckel #1 it just doesn’t make sense at all

      • http://www.facebook.com/jwcrkelly Jonathan W Kelly

The few games I watched, notice few, he threw a lot of WR screens and quick slants. T. Austin fluffed Geno’s stats w/ YAC’s. Not Geno’s fault but the truth. I’d be happy with the next Kapernick or R. Wilson (not 1st rd qb’s) as the Chiefs QB.
        .

    • superman_25_58

Every one was high on Geno and all his throws including the deep ball during the Combine, and Joeckell to me got out done by Eric Fisher at the Combine, so ya expect a lot of changing reports IMO.

  • Joe Myers

well chiefs fans get ready to be disappointed for the next ten years . His is such a stupid move stupid stupid stupid stupid how stupid can thies guys be like and l Alex smith a god dame bum that couldn’t throw his weight around an out house we will see this years mat Flynn or Kolb take your pick . Wrong direction wow wow wow wow what a stupid year this is already f them f um all . Draft a Lt for f reason . Bring in some stupid piece of s QB he ain’t better then matt Cassel he’s a s bag like the rest of our QB watch . Imagine how stupid the entire chiefs kingdom is going to feel for the nest ten years . If this is what their going to do then im out f being a sports fan this is so stupid I’m not going to watch the chiefs keep f loosing over and over year in and year out . And i won’t be hear to tell you i told you so

    • Jarad

To the last sentence, thank you!

      • Joe Myers

really ef off . You can be ok with watching the chiefs loose year in and year out im vary passionate about my team . Watched since I was born . And we are going to see the chiefs get no where for a long time . So ef off

        • Jarad

Its ok buddy. Take a deep breathe. No need to pms all over this thread. Just stating that id prefer not to see f bomb after f bomb from the arm chair GM

I don’t think anyone who writes/types and spells the way you do should call anyone or anything dumb.

    • Chris Tarrants

I completely agree with you! I’m sick of spending my money on Chiefs merchandise with the hope of maybe next year. If they pull a move like that then I will be with you on jumping off the wagon! Iv been a chiefs fan for 20 years but if they stay with the same stupid mentality then I will find a team that I can root for and not feel totally embarressed to wear my jersey or hats when I go up town

      • Joe Myers

man that’s the thing I can’t route for any other team . I just will drop sports and have a hole im my sole . Why would Reid come in and do the same thing peoli did just dont understand

        • KCMikeG

Come on Kraigk & Chris be true to your team. When you are a fan of a team then you are loyal through the good and the bad. otherwise you are a “fair weather” or “band wagon” fan. You need to take a step back and realize being a fan of the KC Chiefs is more than this player, that coach or last season. They will come and go – it is what remains that strengthens us to weather the down times. It is about the heritage, the honors earned by team coaches and players over time, the accomplishments over the history of the team. We shall overcome – have faith my fellow Chief fans.

    • Chelsii.

Well we are going to miss you and your grammar.

      • Jarad

        Haha

  • Joe Myers

it ain’t even worth being a chiefs fan anymore . If they really actually go that route we will be stuck just outside the draft picks in the future to draft a franchise QB . For the next four to five years . We ain’t going to win a SB in my life time if they go this route . So stupid do dumb so ignorant . Alex should of been booted for the san Fran 49rs a long time ago smith . Dame bum we going to see a dame bum at QB and re uild what their just going to waists all our players careers . So sad so dumb so heartbreaking . Just will be a shock if they take this path to the celler of the AFC west . Alex smih sucks or did the NFL forget .

    • Jim Harper

Yeah, we figured out your opinion after the first post. You would be wise to allow this to play out. This time of year you can believe none of what you hear or read and only half of what you see.

      • Chris Tarrants

Agreed but it’s frustrating all the same, I try my best not to cuss on here but it is hard sometimes! We all want the same thing and are all tired of rebuilding

    • KCMikeG

Don’t panic yet. They could get Alex Smith, cut Cassel and draft Geno for all we know. Point is step back from that ledge my friend. NONE of this has been confirmed.

    • http://twitter.com/biglump007 Leon Ritz

Try to lay off the crack before commenting, maybe people could understand you then

  • jimfromkcj

The main reason I don’t support the Chiefs getting Alex Smith is because he isn’t a franchise QB and we will be overpaying him. I would prefer Matt Moore as he is not bad and a whole lot cheaper. I think I would go for Joeckel in the first rd and Barrett Jones in the second. If they keep Albert he could be LT, LG, or RT. Put them where they play the best or if they don’t want to play where they help the team the most trade or release them. It is past time that we coddle players.

    • Chris Tarrants

the main reason I don’t like Alex smith is because he is Matt Cassel reborn! A soso qb who is on a team that makes them look better

      • jimfromkcj

You just made a good argument for the team first before a QB. The team makes the QB, not the other way around.

  • Chris Tarrants

Same shit different feet under the desk! Always rebuilding and never using common sense. We will just switch good left tackles and trade two shitty QB’s nothing more

  • Doug McD

Probably just driving the QB class stock down so they can take one with their 2nd pick. Take it all with a huge grain of salt. These guys are playing mind games with the other GM’s and Coaches. It’s all in how the system works.

  • mnelson52

If they give anything higher than a 6th round pick for Alex, they are overpaying. If they are going to overpay, they might as well go ahead and take Geno. Maybe they will double dip and overpay for both Smiths.

  • Joe Myers

alex smith what as joke . alex smith wow Alex smith I dont believe that I can’t we just went threw this the last five years

    • superman_25_58

Ya Alex Smith was considered a bust until Harbaugh came along and made him relevant again while grooming his replacement. This should tell you something if Harbaugh replaced him with a younger Qb even though Alex Smith was performing well, but got a concussion which led to his undoing in SF. To me this probably means he couldn’t see him being that guy to take them to the promise land and ultimately win the Super Bowl. So why would you want that Qb on your team?

    • cyberry

I think everybody is getting upset to fast..If/when they cut Matt Cassel they need a veteran for leadership.. Just because Reid isn’t ready to hand over the key’s to a rookie. I’m sure they are still drafting a quarterback. I would think after last year having Brady Quinn as the competition and back up everybody would feel confident about this. It’s hasn’t been shown any quarterback in this draft is ready to lead a team from day one. I personally like the idea of getting Bray now..

  • GDL40

WOOOOW…… throw away a high pick for a backup QB, for Alex Freakin Smith who TOTALLY SUCKS AANNDD throw away the first overall pick on a position where we already have a top notch player at, just to not pay him what he deserves. .I really hope it dsnt go down like that : ( I refuse to believe Reid and Dorsey are that freakin’ stupid. Guess we’ll know in a couple of months. I would rather not waste that pick and keep Cassel than give it to SF for someone they dont even want and is not much of an upgrade. I WILL ABSOLUTELY HATE THESE PEOPLE IF THEY DO SOME CRAP LIKE THAT !!!!!!

  • john

I would rather they re-sign Albert and take the DT out of Utah with the first pick. The D-line would be more of an upgrade over Albert at LT. The dude from Utah (can’t spell his name, yet) his a MUCH bigger jump over Jackson or Dorsey than Joeckle would be over Albert.
Also, I’d rather they get Foles, largely because of his age, size and history with Reid than Smith who is already going on his eight year in the NFL.
I think Smith will, obviously, be an upgrade, but I’m not crazy about the Joeckle part of it.
The Geno Smith fans, in my opinion, are just being emotional about … first pick…KC needs a QB…it’s got to be a QB, etc, etc….can’t do that if the guy isn’t there.

    • Chris Tarrants

That makes no sense because he is there, Geno has better numbers by far than any qb drafted EVER! He doesn’t kiss ass and comes for wv that is the only reason Mel Kiper isn’t sucking his butthole like he did Luck last year! Oh and go back and look at Cam Newton, Kiper had him at the end of the first early second and he went #1 and has done a great job.

  • Stacy D. Smith

If they’re truly hoping to retain Albert, all of this is a way to gain leverage in contract negotiations. The last thing Dorsey wants to do is look desperate. The Chiefs do have options at LT. That works in their favor.

The picture should get clearer come March 4th.

  • cyberry

Alex Smith is just temporary..I doubt he’s intended for the future long term. Tajh Boyd and Teddy Bridgewater dominated in their Bowl Games against superior defenses, that’s the “it” factor I would expect from the top pick quarterback. Considering that they (plus AJ McCarron and Aaron Murry) are coming out next year and would (arguably) be picked before Geno, I don’t want to take a quarterback out of desperation.. I want to get this straight..I am not a Geno hater..I wouldn’t be upset if the Chiefs draft him at the right spot.. I can’t justify taking a chance on a quarterback who was picked 2nd team all Big 12 and the player who was 1st team..was told to enter the draft as tight-end because he doesn’t have what it takes to be a NFL quarterback…The 1st pick should make a immediate impact with multiple pro-bowls in his future..My point is..I think having a veteran come in that won’t throw games away, and will provide stability and leadership while a rookie learns the system (I know Alex isn’t going to be carrying this team on his shoulders) will be better in the long run. This team needs to get their confidence and mojo back..not having a struggling rookie QB for a year would allow this team to build much needed chemistry. Remember when Orton came in..the team played better because they had faith in the QB.

  • Mike Ross

To all of those sayin we should pay Albert…the guy wants $10 million a year and has a history of back problems. Let him walk and draft Joekel. Alex Smith is a decent QB that took the 9er’s to the NFC championship game 2 seasons ago and was winning last season before being benched beause of injury. Geno is not worth the #1 overall and is not leaps and bounds better than whichever QB can be had in the 2nd rd. Save the $$$ by letting Albert walk and use that $$$ to sign Bowe, Colquitt and some decent FA’s.

    • superman_25_58

Actually it is panning out to be the quite opposite. After the Combine today Geno clearly separated himself from the other Qb’s but maybe Barkley bc he didn’t throw. If Geno impresses in the Interviews than he will be the clear cut #1 Qb. Show me proof that Albert has had a history of back problems?

  • Killerdoctor27

Noooo!!! This is something Scotty would do!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/kyle.mangione Kyle Mangione

Alex smith has 2-3 1,000 yard +receivers with that much of a receiving core how could anybody look bad ?
