Schefter: Chiefs Will Find A Way To Keep Dwayne Bowe

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs are going to find a way to keep WR Dwayne Bowe.

Schefter made the comments today on Sports Center.

“The Chiefs are gonna figure out a way to keep him.

There isn’t much mystery to how the Chiefs can keep Bowe. They have one of two options. They can either sign him to a long-term deal or they can place the franchise tag on him for the second season in a row.

The Chiefs will have to decide on Bowe’s future soon. The team got the ability to use the franchise tag starting yesterday and they have two weeks in which to use it.

That means KC is likely heavily involved in negotiations with Bowe’s agent as we speak.

The other elephant in the room here is LT Branden Albert. Albert will also be a free agent if he is not re-signed or tagged. We’ve already heard that the Chiefs want to keep both Bowe and Albert. This latest report from Schefter kind of makes it sound like Bowe is ahead of Albert on the list.

The ideal situation would be for the team to find a way to sign both players to long-term deals. If that can’t be accomplished, the next most favorable option would be to ink Bowe and tag Albert.

It appears that Bowe is coming back, one way or another. But how Bowe comes back could determine whether or not Branden Albert comes back with him.

They need to sign both of them so we can draft geno

    • DraftExpertFor Chiefs

The Chiefs don’t have enough money for both. They could use both, but it’s one or the other, and the Chiefs will do everything in their power to keep Bowe.

        Wrong

Cutting others such as Jackson, and now Boss and Breaston, more than doubles our cap situation. We can sign both plus our draft picks.

    • mnelson52

Even if they sign both, they will still wait till later in the draft to get a QB

      • Justin

If they do that then wat qbs will be left then well have to c another 2-12 year cuz witout a legitimate qb we dnt stand a chance

        • chiefridgy

          2-14

Justin is in Denial just like me and probably missed a couple of games again just like me. Medication is a wonderful thing! Hope is the best medication and I need some for next year. I need a really Big QB FIX and I need it NOW!

        • Chelsii.

They won with Cassell two years ago. Lots of teams win without “legitimate” qbs. Heck Reid just needs to give Garcia a call.

Bowe should take priority since this draft has franchise LTs but not a day 1 #1WR. However, I still don’t want to overpay for Bowe. Needing to sign Albert and draft a Qb should help keep that from happening.

    • chiefridgy

Do you not think Bowe is worth top receiver money?

      • mnelson52

He usually has over a 1000 yds. with crappy QBs and a lot of Charles yds. were sprung by good blocks by Bowe. He is one of the best WR. blockers in the NFL.

        • Jim Harper

Now that is true. Bowe does an excellent job of blocking downfield.

        • KCMikeG

If we do the right thing at QB we will see that Bowe will be well worth the investment. I have been down on him for his drops but with with a leader who puts the ball where he can be successful I think we will see a the best Bowe yet.

      • Ehud

Where in what I typed did I say he wasn’t worth top receiver money? I simply said I don’t want to overpay. I do not think he is worth Calvin Johnson($18M) or Larry Fitzgerald($14M) money. Vincent Jackson, who I think is comparable on pay scale, averages about $11M. I think $10-12M is the top window I’d pay for him and feel like that’s fair. Under that and I think the GM did a good job. Over that I think Bowe’s agent won.

    Adam, Ian Rapoport called…

  • chiefridgy

    That Schefter is a genius.

  • ArrowFan

If we tag Bowe who and what would you trade him for? I say a first round pick straight up. As far as players I would want a like Foles and a fourth rounder.

    • Stacy D. Smith

Tag and trade? That almost never happens.

      • mnelson52

People do not want to pay the extra price for a franchised player

  • Danny W

    Some where over Dwayne Bowe.

  • DraftExpertFor Chiefs

The Chiefs would love to keep both of them, they didn’t need to say that. They are going to resign Bowe and everyone knows it. If I were the Chiefs, I would draft Joeckel in the first round, because they are screwed at tackle after Albert. In the second round, I’d take Ezekiel Ansah, because the Chiefs really need a DE. I would maybe take a QB in the next round, but if I were the Chiefs, I’d wait on Johnny Manziel.

Ya I’m with Justin on this one, we gotta sign both. If it comes down to it though I say retain Albert and let Bowe walk. Jamaal Charles is obviously the bright spot on KC’s offense, and keeping our line strong is vital to that. Dwayne Bowes an awesome receiver but we aren’t about to become a pass heavy offense anytime soon. If we have to let go of one, Bowe makes more sense.

    • Justin

Bt without bowe then our opponents r always gonna think we’re gonna run the ball, look at wat did last ear against us, even wit bowe. Witout a legitimate qb, we have no chance to go bck to the playoffs so we need to keep bowe cuz baldwin hasn’t lived up to his expectations nd mccluster almost fumbled the ball when he gts it

      • chiefridgy

Mccluster was always put in a bad position by cassel

    • KCMikeG

Agreed that we should sign them both or sign & tag. Actually Reid’s offense will have us throwing the ball more. The Eagles threw around 60% and was nearly two to one in total yards passing over rushing attempts. Last year we ran 25 times more than we passed and only had 300 more yards passing than rushing. The change this year will be dramatic and bring back memories of the 2002-2005 Vermeil days of offensive production. The only difference will be that our defense will be top 10 instead of bottom of the barrel.
