Most Kansas City Chiefs fans probably assume that QB Matt Cassel’s time with the team is up, but according to head coach Andy Reid, it is too early to tell.

Reid, in comments published by the Kansas City Star, said Cassel is still being evaluated.

"I’m going to just let that play out. We’re too early in the process to know that. We’ll continue to evaluate it. We’re evaluating him just like we do a free agent. That’s what you do, and the thing about that is it takes time. I think he realizes that. That’s how it works when there’s a change."

This is pretty much the response you’d expect from Reid at this point. The new regime has a lot of work to do. Not only do they have to prepare for the NFL Draft and free agency, they also need to quickly review and evaluate their own players.

Cassel probably will be cut. He has almost zero chance of being the starter and the Chiefs won’t want to pay him to be a backup. At the same time, the Chiefs won’t just go making cuts to make cuts. They need to make sure they at least have a chance to land a suitable veteran replacement for Cassel before they send him on his way.

With free agency looming on March 12, the Chiefs have a lot of work to do. We will likely start seeing some cuts soon as the team prepares for the 2013 league year.

Stay tuned.
