I was cheering for Tony Gonzalez.

As I sat in a local bar and watched the curtain close (probably) on the Tony Gonzalez era, I couldn’t help but feel sad.

Tony Gonzalez was a my first, favorite Chiefs player. I can still remember keeping track of his stats when I was in middle school. Now, at nearly 30 years old, I make my living covering sports. I can’t help but give some of the credit to Tony G and the Kansas City Chiefs. It was my love of football and the Chiefs that got me into this business in the first place.

After the game tonight, Gonzalez reiterated that his NFL career was likely over.

“This is probably my last ride,” he said.

So Falcon or Chief, I was rooting for Tony today. I’ve enjoyed watching him so much over the years, not just as a Chiefs fan but as a sports fan in general.

Tony, on behalf of all of Chiefs Nation, you’re a champion to us.

Here’s hoping you keep your promise to retire a Chief. We’d love to have you back.
