Tony Gonzalez: This Is Probably My Last Ride

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

I was cheering for Tony Gonzalez.

As I sat in a local bar and watched the curtain close (probably) on the Tony Gonzalez era, I couldn’t help but feel sad.

Tony Gonzalez was a my first, favorite Chiefs player. I can still remember keeping track of his stats when I was in middle school. Now, at nearly 30 years old, I make my living covering sports. I can’t help but give some of the credit to Tony G and the Kansas City Chiefs. It was my love of football and the Chiefs that got me into this business in the first place.

After the game tonight, Gonzalez reiterated that his NFL career was likely over.

“This is probably my last ride,” he said.

So Falcon or Chief, I was rooting for Tony today. I’ve enjoyed watching him so much over the years, not just as a Chiefs fan but as a sports fan in general.

Tony, on behalf of all of Chiefs Nation, you’re a champion to us.

Here’s hoping you keep your promise to retire a Chief. We’d love to have you back.

Patrick, you said it very well…we will miss him very much and will be so very proud when he retires as a CHIEF!

  • ArrowFan

I would love to have him starting as our TE in 2013. He was awesome today. If only Atlanta could cover Davis he would be in the SB.

  • Lyle Graversen

Sad to see him go, but at least he got a playoff win before he called it a career.

On a positive side note, at least now KC can retire his number and we won’t have to see guys like Anthony Becht and Junior Hemmingway running around with an #88 jersey on.

would love to sign him for a day and have him retiree as a Chief instead of a Falcon. My top favorite player for the Chiefs.

Something tells me he retires as a falcon. That dunk on our goal post in an Atlanta Uniform probably has something to do with it.

He said he would retire a Chief. I never had a problem with him dunking on the goal post. That’s what he does. I was happy to see him to it one more time at Arrowhead, even if it was for another team.
