Deadspin: Manti Te’o’s Dead Girlfriend Was A Hoax

Many Kansas City Chiefs fans have called for the team to draft Notre Dame standout linebacker Manti Te’o with the #1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

After today, those folks may want to rethink their position.

According to a Deadspin report that is flat out rocking the sports world, Te’o's girlfriend, who allegedly died of leukemia, never existed.

From Deadspin:

There was no Lennay Kekua. Lennay Kekua did not meet Manti Te’o after the Stanford game in 2009. Lennay Kekua did not attend Stanford. Lennay Kekua never visited Manti Te’o in Hawaii. Lennay Kekua was not in a car accident. Lennay Kekua did not talk to Manti Te’o every night on the telephone. She was not diagnosed with cancer, did not spend time in the hospital, did not engage in a lengthy battle with leukemia. She never had a bone marrow transplant. She was not released from the hospital on Sept. 10, nor did Brian Te’o congratulate her for this over the telephone. She did not insist that Manti Te’o play in the Michigan State or Michigan games, and did not request he send white flowers to her funeral. Her favorite color was not white. Her brother, Koa, did not inform Manti Te’o that she was dead. Koa did not exist. Her funeral did not take place in Carson, Calif., and her casket was not closed at 9 a.m. exactly. She was not laid to rest.

This story is jaw-droppingly unbelievable. I’m not saying it is true, though the Deadspin report makes a pretty convincing case.

What I am saying, is that you HAVE to read it.

Then report right back here and tell us what you think.

Sounds like he’d fit right at home in Oakland.

    • ArrowFan

May be he is already sufering from concution syndrome?

    • KCMikeG

or the bungles although they have cleaned it up a little. Then again? Think Burfict last year. Screws loose and they got him as an UDRFA and he was very good with no issues.

  • Cha-iefs

After some looking around I also read Te’os statement on this whole matter and the defense is that he was a victim of a hoax. Lol he was in love with a girl he never met online? wow anyways i guess the details will come out as folks start pressing this for more answers. If this was a lie made up by him & his dad….thats psycho stuff right there. Either way this is WEIRD.

    • Patrick Allen

I don’t buy he was a victim. He went on the record as saying he met her and exchanged phone numbers after a game. Total bullshitter.

      • Kevin Jones Sr.

His parents even went on record and said she “visited” him at home so clearly the family was in on it…. I say it was publicity to win the Heisman and he didnt lol

        • KCMikeG

Guess there is still some justice in this world.

      • Danny W

Whatever it is, if he made it up then he should drop to the second round for punishment or hell for that matter, to the third we’re we’ll pity draft his sorry lying ways.

      • Donkeyhater

Can’t believe I wanted the Chiefs to take this guy #1. He used his own grandmother’s death as an opportunity to create the story.

        • KCMikeG

You weren’t alone. Could he be the 2013 version of Burfict?? Bungles got a steal on him.

          • Donkeyhater

I doubt he will far as Burfict did unless he bombs the combine workouts. But, this is such a strange situation it’s very hard to predict what will happen. He better just tell the whole truth in team interviews or they will see right through it.

      • KCMikeG

Guess he is trying to get some of the spot light Lance Armstrong has been hogging. This today and Lance on freaking Oprah tomorrow. Maybe the Mayans were right and the world really did begin to end on 12/21/2012……..

  • Nicholas Abuhl

no thanks, if there’s one thing I hate it’s liars , don’t want him near the chiefs, unless it’s jamaal blazing past him for a touchdown

  • Chelsii.

    manti te’o has 99 problems but a b*tch ain’t one.

    • ArrowFan

      Pimpin aint easy

    • Danny W

      Oh! Soprano’s style.

  • Jim Harper

I don’t know what is true. Both Te’o and his father claim it was an elabrate hoax. Maybe they are trying to cover themselves. I just don’t know and neither do we at this point. I hardly consider Deadspin a reliable source. This much I do know. He is one helluva linebacker. It really doesn’t matter because he was not coming to KC anyway. I am sure all will be revealed sooner or later, but for now I choose to take a wait and see attitude.

    • KCMikeG

He was being discussed as a future HOF before his bowl fiasco. I haven’t seen anything about what happened to him in that game – missing tackles and just looked lost? Maybe the walls were crumbling down around him already and it effected his play? Strange deal.

      • Donkeyhater

That is what I am thinking as well. When I watched the game it looked to me like his mind was somewhere else.

      • Danny W

He had a play behind the line of scrimmage and just whiffed. I think he will be a 100 plus tackler in the NFL year in and year out. Hopefully this fiasco makes him slip to the top of the second were we can steal him.

  • ArrowFan

Puts a whole new meaning on the term distance relationship.

  • Danny W

I had an imaginary girlfriend once, but I never sentenced her to death via cancer. Sheesh dude’s got relationship issues.

    • ArrowFan

      What only one?

      • Danny W

She was crazy jealous bro, if she caught me cheating she would have chopped me up. I ended up having to get a restraining order later on, when I got a “real” girlfriend, whatever that is.

  • big chief

We already had a linebacker with mental issues. Don’t really need another one.

    • Donkeyhater

What is sad is that after the Belcher ordeal I thought Te’o would be the perfect kind of player to bring in to move on from that…

  • Jonathan Aldridge

even though i didnt want the chiefs to get him, i always thought he’d be a good nfl player. now i cant see a single team wanting him.

  • Jim Harper

What is happening here? Geez you guys sound like a blood thirsty lynch mob. What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? Again, I don’t know what the truth is here. And again, I don’t consider Deadspin a reliable source, and why did it take until now for the story to come out? Don’t you think that the dead girlfriend story would be been a high priority for any journalist to break it? The university has gone on record as being 100% supportive of Teo. Surely they would have conducted their own investigation before putting the Notre Dame stamp of approval on it. Clearly there are more questions than answers so far. But I am a long way off from convicting this kid.
    Grow up people!

  • KC Claussen

Why would anyone make up such an elaborate cover? He’s gay! He may get enough pressure from this that he has to come out.
