Chiefs First Round QB Quiz: Name That QB

We’ve heard a lot recently about how there isn’t a QB in this year’s NFL draft that is worthy of a top pick. We all know that college numbers don’t tell the entire story in terms of a QB becoming a successful NFL starting QB, but I thought it might be interesting to look at some of this year’s top QB prospects and some of the recent top QBs taken. What I did is take this season’s three top prospects (Geno Smith, Matt Barkley, and Tyler Wilson) and look at their stats for their past two seasons. I then looked at seven other NFL QBs that were taken in the first three picks of the draft that also started at least two seasons to see how they match up. Instead of just giving you the information I thought I’d make a contest out of it. So can you match the QB to his numbers?

Here are your possible answers:

A. Geno Smith
B. Matt Barkley
C. Tyler Wilson
D. Andrew Luck
E. Robert Griffin III
F. Sam Bradford
G. Matt Ryan
H. Matt Stafford
I. JaMarcus Russell
J. Alex Smith

And here are your options:

QB #1
565-824 (68.6%)
7,841 yards (9.5 YPA)
86 TDs and 16 INTs
23-5 record

QB #2
551-776 (71.0%)
6,855 yards (8.8 YPA)
69 TDs and 18 INTs
23-3 record

QB #3
526-839 (62.7%)
7,025 yards (8.4 YPA)
45 TDs and 19 INTs
15-10 record

QB #4
387-583 (66.4%)
5,199 yards (8.9 YPA)
47 TDs and 7 INTs
22-2 record

QB #5
696-1016 (68.5%)
8,389 yards (8.3 YPA)
71 TDs and 13 INTs
17-8 record

QB #6
650-1079 (60.2%)
7446 yards (6.9 YPA)
46 TDs and 29 INTs
21-6 record

QB #7
420-653 (64.3%)
5572 yards (8.5 YPA)
43 TDs and 17 INTs
22-4 record

QB #8
554-833 (66.5%)
6,801 yards (8.2 YPA)
75 TDs and 22 INTs
17-7 record

QB #9
595-856 (69.5%)
7794 yards (9.1 YPA)
59 TDs and 14 INTs
17-9 record

QB #10
429-731 (58.7%)
5982 yards (8.2 YPA)
44 TDs and 20 INTs
21-5 record

So let’s see if you can pick out who is who. Post your answers in the comments below and I’ll post the answer key later tonight. Then you can compare this year’s class to previous years picks.

Good luck!

Qb#2 is geno smith that’s the only one I know

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

71% of his passes. Pretty dang impressive.

      • http://www.facebook.com/erika.motley.3 Erika Groth

        And 8.8 ypa isn’t bad

      • http://www.facebook.com/erika.motley.3 Erika Groth

Oh… And I admit I was wrong #5 is geno. I made the mistake of seeing 71% of passes this year. Oh well.

      • http://www.facebook.com/james.ratley1 James Ratley

He is 3rd in touchdowns, but has less int’s than the 2 td leaders above him,#1 and #8 with 16 int and 22 respectively. I just dont understand what people dont like about G.smith.Accuracy is measured by comp%,his is 68.5 and 71% this season!

        • KCMikeG

He RARELY ever takes a sack too. Hardly ever hear anyone compare that stat. Excellent TD vs Int ratio, football nerd, that can throw, deep & accurately. What more could we want?

          • Jim Harper

That says it all Mike. Also if these guys are picking our QB don’t you think they should at least be able to spell the guys name?

    • Lyle Graversen

#2 is Luck, #5 Geno but his numbers hold up pretty well.

      • http://www.facebook.com/james.ratley1 James Ratley

What cracks me up is #7,j russel. So hyped and his numbers suck compared to Geno Smith’s. Chiefs are fools if they dont take Smith 1st.

        • Jim Harper

          Correct!

  • Daniel Mayfield

QB #9 is Geno on my guess. He didn’t have to many loses until this year. The YPA were pretty good because of Austin and Bailey. In the 5 losing streak, there were more ints then he normally had but I believe it was because the WRs couldn’t handle the tougher defense since it was their 1st year in the Big 12. He was good in the pocket and buying time when he needed to. He ran good. His I.Q. In the game is good, IMO anyway. He reminds me of McNabb and Big Ben….getting away from sacks, if there’s room, so he can buy time for WRs to get open. Plus his accuracy is good, even on the deep passes. Which would be good for Baldwin or Bowe(if we have him). I think if they pick him and get him in the game quick, the team will improve. Making him sit for a few yrs to try to learn from QBs we have now….his I.Q. will be dropping down. Go with Geno, he’s the right guy for the team.

    • Lyle Graversen

      #9 is RG3, #5 is Geno.

Geno’s numbers hold up to most of these guys and are clearly better than a few of them.

      • KCMikeG

So WHY does everyone keep saying their aren’t any QB’s worth a 1st round pick or that there are no franchise QB’s? I have never seen anyone support their statement. This post appears to disprove this dismissal.

        • Lyle Graversen

Admittedly, stats don’t tell the whole story, otherwise guys like colt Brennan and cliff kingsbury would have made it in the nfl. I’m a Geno fan, but he needs to prove his worth at the combine and workouts then he’ll shoot up the big boards.

    Answers:

    QB#1 – f. Sam Bradford
    QB#2 – d. Andrew Luck
    QB#3 – c. Tyler Wilson
    QB#4 – j. Alex Smith
    QB#5 – a. Geno Smith
    QB#6 – g. Matt Ryan
    QB#7 – i. Jamarcus Russell
    QB#8 – b. Matt Barkley
    QB#9 – e. RG III
    QB#10 – h. Matthew Stafford

    • Lyle Graversen

These are the correct answers. Matt is the official AA QB quiz winner. Your prize is a hearty congratulations and the respect of all that read this. I asked for a cash prize but apparently we bet all our budget on the Chiefs winning the AFC west this year. Oops!

  • micah stephenson

#2 is Geno. 71% pass completions.

    • Michael Shaw

      No he is #5.

    • Lyle Graversen

      #2 is Luck.

  • ArrowFan

#2 can’t be Geno not enough losses

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

      Nice catch.

      • Daniel Mayfield

You think I’m right on that?

  • ArrowFan

Geno is #5 at any rate why is he not worthy again?

    • Michael Shaw

I don’t think any QB is worth that #1 this year. Last year was a rare exception of how many good QB’s there ended up being available. I SO wish we had gotten Cousins, Kaepernick or Osweiller.

    • Lyle Graversen

I’m guessing that after the combine and workouts that Geno will be the consensus #1. Just my gut feeling.

  • http://www.facebook.com/erika.motley.3 Erika Groth

You know. If we don’t look at the names I would say that 1, 2, 5, and 9 warrant a high first rnd draft pick. This being only on stats not film.

    • Lyle Graversen

That would be Bradford, Luck, Geno, and RG3.

  • Danny W

That CREEP Smell Kiper Jr, says were drafting a LT number 1 overall. I just want to grab his nasty hair and shake some brains into that idiot.

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

      lol

    • http://www.facebook.com/erika.motley.3 Erika Groth

It ok one of the bleachers report guys said we would take a dline first overall.

    • Michael Shaw

Yeah it is like they don’t even pay attention to the teams and just try to fit in the BPA to each pick anymore!! We don’t need a LT or DL with the #1, however that might make us the best trade option this year for a team that needs the top guys in those positions.

  • tyler sims

Mike Lennon NC State I can’t believe no one is talking about him?????

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen
      • http://www.facebook.com/erika.motley.3 Erika Groth

Paddy I can’t leave/see comment on the glennson article….Glennson would’ve been a great pick in second round. However I hope whoever is in charge of personal come April takes a long look at Geno Smith, Matt Barkley, Tyler Wilson, mike Glennson, and Landry Jones. In fact personally Jones>Barkley for kc.

    • Lyle Graversen

Glennon is my second choice after Geno, but when you have the #1 pick you don’t need a second choice. The link Paddy posted is to a write up I did on him a couple of weeks ago. I wouldn’t be shocked if Glennon ends up the 2nd QB taken after Geno.

  • tyler sims

    Glennon sorry

  • http://www.facebook.com/erika.motley.3 Erika Groth

Had dream that we drafted geno smith and that Bailey kid he like to throw to in the second…

  • http://www.facebook.com/erika.motley.3 Erika Groth

For a weak qb class there is 5 players I wouldn’t mind seeing the chiefs get in the first or second round. And i predict whoever gets Landry Jones gets a steal if after day 1.

    • http://powellbailbonds.weebly.com/ big chief

People call me crazy but whoever gets Jones gets what will be this year’s best qb. I would be fine with Geno Smith if he didn’t have that crybaby finger pointing Jay Cutler attitude when things go bad. I think he could be the next Vince Young.

      • Lyle Graversen

I don’t see Cutler, he doesn’t really “cry” he just kind of stands there indifferent to it, almost like he’s thinking “oh well”. I’ll admit that it bothers me a little too, but then again people used to say the same thing about Eli Manning until he started winning Super Bowls and then it changed to “nothing rattles him, he’s so calm”.

        • Chief Hokie

          That is so true.

    • Lyle Graversen

Not a Landry Jones fan. He’s not close to the QB Bradford was and if you look at Bradford’s numbers in the pros, he hasn’t exactly set the world on fire. I think a big problem is that OU doesn’t allow their QBs to read defenses Pre-snap. They go the line of scrimmage and then look to the coaches who then signal if they should change plays based on the defense. I think it slows their development for the pros.

      • KCMikeG

That’s why like Geno #1 and Landry #3. GS gets his shot while we develop LJ. Having a plan B certainly would be a great idea for THE most important position on the team. Sure paid off for the Skins this year.

  • Michael Shaw

Wow, I couldn’t guess any of these right without looking them up on the internet. Good post. I know this will likely get me killed and/or chastised and it doesn’t have anything to do with this post, but I am starting to think the HC and GM should stay where they are. RAC needs to get a handle on the D and Pioli needs to find him a better OC than Daboll………….Norv Turner maybe when he is fired. Here is my reasoning. We ALL know that this season went into the tank pretty much solely due to one position/player………..Matt Cassel. I truly believe Pioli would not let RAC get a different QB after they couldn’t get Peyton to come to town. I think if he had our pick in this year’s draft might have been a QB instead of Dontari Poe. Had we grabbed Cousins, Wilson, Osweiller, Moore or Kaepernick I think our team would have likely been in the playoff hunt. We would have struggled early, but I am a firm believer that the way some of these guys have played this year proves me right. There was no way we would have been in the RG3 or Luck race, but can you imagine Kaepernick, Cousins or Wilson throwing balls to Bowe, Baldwin, Moeaki, DMC, JC, Hillis, Boss or one of our rookie WR’s? Those three are all head over heels better than Cassel’s pinky, much less his arm! I say leave RAC and even Pioli in place, get a new OC and maybe a dedicated DC, draft a good QB or try to get Alex Smith and see where this train goes next. The other reason is consistency. All we have had since Pioli got here is inconsistency in the coaching carousel. Keeping RAC in place, bringing in a new DC and OC that run the same style of O and D that we have this year and fine tune our players a little and we could be fighting for a playoff spot next year. If we draft Geno Smith at #1 I am afraid it will be a reach, so we have to trade down to where we can get him cheaper than the #1 pick and then get more picks to add depth to OL, WR, CB, ILB and maybe even SS/FS. So what do you guys think?

    • Lyle Graversen

RAC has been horrible, the team has been unmotivated and unprepared and that is on the coach. He has to go. As far as Pioli goes, when you can’t pick a coach or a QB well AND you alienate the entire fan base, it’s time to go.

No trading down either. I want an 100% guarantee that we will get the top QB in this draft. The only way to do that is to take him #1. That’s the whole advantage of getting the #1 pick. It’s time for KC to be that team, I don’t care about the risk, the reward is worth it.

    • Jim Harper

I think you are certifiably nuts! I understand the logic of trading down to get an extra pick or two except unless I am guaranteed that Geno will be there when we pick then no. Geno is absolutely the closest thing to a sure thing in this draft when it comes to QB’s and I for one am not willing to risk losing him. This pick is too important. Also the idea of keeping Pioli and Crennel is just plain stupid and the reasons are so obvious that they are not worth detailing here.

  • http://powellbailbonds.weebly.com/ big chief

Considering Bradford missed half of two seasons and left before his senior year his numbers are just stupid. That was an amazing offense. 6 games straight over 60 points and highest scoring team in history. Now Jones has broken most of his records.

  • Daniel Mayfield

There are better QBs in the draft then who we have now. Do you want to see them go with Quinn or Cassel again? If so, start complaining about next yrs season now cause it’s gonna be just as bad. I haven’t seen, but haven’t looked, any FA QBs. I don’t know if they would be able to get Alex Smith. If Hunt don’t at least get rid Pioli, there’s gonna be a big dump in the fans. The franchise isn’t that great right now. Get a better GM who can help to start building it up. Pioli sure hasn’t done, and sure as heck can’t do, it. 4 yrs it’s been going down. 1st, better GM for a better staff.
2nd, BETTER QB!!! There’s a few in the draft that can build this team up. Maybe not all the way to a SB but until they can find that #1 QB to build the franchise with. We’ve already got the other talented players. Get 1st rd QB while we still have those players with us.
Like somebody else said, get Geno Smith in 1st rd and then Stedman Baily in 2nd rd. We’ve already got 2 players like Tavon Austin…Dexter and Wylie. But if Austin is there in 2nd rd, get him! lol
    I think…
    1st, QB
2nd, CB,DB(unless we lose Bowe, then get a WR)
    3rd, WR(if not in 2nd),LB
    4th OL, DE
After that, go for whoever has the best stats and would be good for for depth

  • jimfromkcj

One of the problems you have to look at is that if we get a new GM and HC and they draft Geno or another QB in this draft and they turn out to be a bust or maybe just another Cassel. what do you think is going to happen? Will they admit that they screwed up or are they going to give the kid a couple of years to see if he develops? I am inclined to think they will have to give the kid more time. There are none of these guys without egos and they hate to admit to a mistake. I also don’t think that any of this year’s crop of QB’s have sure franchise abilities. They seem to me to be a lot of average to adequate starters in the next level.

  • drtold

We are going to have a great draft Chiefs’ fans. I see us taking Geno Smith rd1, Alexander Ogletree rd2, and the Honey Badger rd3. That’s doable, and there is alot of talent out there this year.

    • Michael Shaw

A fullback with our #2? We need an ILB, CB, OL, and WR more than that if we take Geno #1.

    • Michael Shaw

Oh and I am not sure the Honey Badger will last till our third pick.

good morning all’ i would love to see the chiefs go after the best player in this draft, defense first, offense second. put a defensive end on the other side of tamba, or another derrick johnson. pluck a qb from the current field of soon to be availables, and then draft up next year for the qb guy you really want. chiefs have lots of needs right now, so don’t overlook the next derrick thomas
