Romeo Crennel Names Gary Gibbs Defensive Coordinator

According to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel has stepped down as defensive coordinator and has promoted linebackers coach Gary Gibbs to the position.

This news is coming out of Arrowhead right now and we don’t have a lot of details yet. Some crazy (desperate) changes are going on right now. We’ve also heard that the Chiefs have waived Stanford Routt.

There have been calls for Crennel to step away from coordinating the defense since the Chiefs started sucking really hard earlier this season.

Crennel appears to be making one last effort to shake things up. Unfortunately, it appears as though he is just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. It is doubtful that anything can save the Chiefs now.

And if promoting Gibbs does help, it just makes Crennel look even worse for stubbornly not making the move when it could have made a difference.

    What a freaking circus.

Seems to me, that he stepped down from the wrong job! Keep your DC job and fire yourself from being HC!

Gets rid of our 2nd best CB tied with Flowers with 2 int’s?? Now he has successfully cock blocked his own step down to the DC thereby signing his own pink slip. Another amazing coaching decision by RAC. Did he fall down and bump his head recently? I bet if asked why he made the change he would say “I don’t know”. Sad.

        This was Probably Pioli’s decision

I totally agree and I also think this is
just a last-ditch effort to save his job.

  • Jonathan Aldridge

this may be good for romeo. it should take a little pressure off of his back and he won’t have to be more focused on defense

I have been saying all along he needs to chose one or the other if he wants to attempt to salavge his stay in KC… However i fear it may be too late. Only good thing i see coming from this is no more “i dont knows” during press confrences and the fact that we prolly wont just go hire anyone now for HC next year. But if someone big comes along and wants the job there would be nothing to stop them. And even though it never happens im sure Romeo could get his DC job back because as we all know he is a badass DC when thats all he has to worry about!

    • KCMikeG

Sorry but I believe his days as a “badass” DC are over. Our defense has been blown out 14 times in the last three years. He has failed repeatedly to make half time adjustments and isn’t utilizing Houston correctly (coverage vs rushing) or Berry (in the box vs safety roaming backfield).

Is it just 14 games in the last three seasons? I could have sworn it was more. Agreed though Mike Crennel’s hype is long long gone.

        • KCMikeG

I considered final scores of 14 points or more but as we know there were quite a few more that were blow outs that the offense scored garbage points to make the scores closer than the games actually were.

Funny, funny stuff. Pioli is amused over preseason expectation, Crennel is no HC, and Routt is good enough to replace Carr.
So we have Pioli giggling in his office, Crennel stops doing the only thing he does “well”, and Routt is gone leaving a shrimp to replace him and no depth at CB to go along with no depth at OL.
hahahaha OMG can it get funnier. I do not see how.

You hear that everyone? That’s the sound of 31 NFL franchises laughing at us and saying out loud( not mummbling) “What The @#*& Is Going On WIth The Chiefs?!” There was a point in time, granted, the Raiders talked crap, The Broncos sneered at us, and the Chargers made jokes but there was a RESPECT FOR THE CHIEFS. We are no longer respected as a club, a fan base, an organization, nothing. It breaks my heart. This further shows they have no idea what they’re doing. Go ahead, hide behind your cage but a tiger never changes it’s stripes as they say. Stick that in your hat’s Pioli, Romeo, and Clark

  • mnelson52

I can’t believe this is the best Hunt and Pioli can come up with to salvage our season and get the fans back. Move the defensive mind away from defense. Get rid of your #2 corner. I fail to see how this improves our team.

  • James

This is what gets me…You let Brandon Carr go to Dallas because you didn’t want to pay him what he’s worth then go and get a second rate CB and now you let the second rate CB go and now your out a good CB and get rid of the second rate and all that happens is that Crennel step down from DC. And yet we still have 25 Million (I think) under the cap. WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH WITH PICTURE???? Two words SCOTT PIOLI………….

  • Danny W

Way too little too late. This is stupid crazy town. I can’t believe Hunt is allowing them to make decisions like this.

    • mnelson52

I can’t believe he still lets them make decisions at all
