NFL Picks Week 1: Picking Chiefs/Falcons

The expert picks for NFL Week 1 are starting to come in and it looks like the Atlanta Falcons are holding a slight edge over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Over at ESPN, of the 12 experts, six picked the Chiefs and six picked the Falcons. The folks over at Pigskin Pick’em have chosen Atlanta, tipping things in the Falcons’ favor.

Accuscore, a computer simulation, also has Atlanta coming out on top. winning 55% of the simulations. It looks like the average winning score for Atlanta is 22-20. As AA’s Lyle Graversen pointed out earlier this week, 25 points seems to be the magic number for the Chiefs.

In games where Atlanta allowed 25 points or more they are 5-14 (26.3%).

Over at Yahoo, only one of the three analysts picked the Chiefs. The fans also picked the Falcons.

Last, but certainly not least, our our good friends over at Sports Illustrated. Peter King has the Falcons winning in a close one, 33-27. Here is what he had to say:

Game of the Weekend, in terms of explosive plays and great end-to-end action. Tamba Hali picked a bad week to be suspended (the ace Chief pass rusher is gone for one game for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy), because this will be the coming-out party for the deep-throwing Atlanta offense. Watch for offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, in his maiden voyage aboard the Ryan Express, to challenge the Chiefs deep four or five times, minimum.

Now it is your turn. I’ll have my official prediction on Sunday morning but we want to hear from you. Who takes it Sunday, Chiefs or Falcons?

I believe that KC runs the ball 40 times to slow the pace down and come out on top 24/20 in a great home opener. Also i think #88s final game is solid with 75 yds and 1 td. You are truely one of the greats Tony G. We r really gonna miss ya man.

I’ll be looking at the momentum shifts I identified. I think one of the biggest is the deep throws. If they’re expected to throw four or five minimum and the secondary can shut down 4+ consecutively, it’ll be a big deal. That KC’s offensive strengths happen to exploit ATL’s defensive weaknesses is a happy coincidence.

  • Derek Jamison

If our offense can stay on the field we should be able to keep up with the falcons explosive offense. If not, it’s game over for the chiefs.

  • Danny W

As much as I hate to say it the score will be 24 to 7 Atlanta possibly even by more. Our Defense will bend but not break only for so long then they start scoring in bunches while our offense is stagnant.

      That is so 2011.

I agree this team has had 4 drafts and free agent periods to fix the offense and defense, two HC, numerous OCs. We got Cassel, Poe, Jackson, and Routt. Pioli has been Exec of year again.
It is time to kick a little tail. Cannot wait for sunday

Preseason says thats about right. If preseason doesn’t matter I will gladly say I was wrong.

    • Tribal Rage

I gotta agree Danny. However, I feel like there’s 2 options….we lose bad and ugly or win close. Until the D is back at full strength I think we will take a more conservative ball control approach then the track meet attack. Once our D heals and is at full strength we will send the message go ahead, try to catch up and we will unleash fury on the edge and monsters in the middle.

      35-10 Atlanta or 27-23 Chiefs

  • Chief Hokie

I’m gonna go with John Madden on this one and predict that if we can score alot of points and stop the other team from scoring points then we SHOULD win this game.

  • ArrowFan

After the dusts settles everyone will be talking about how unstoppable the Chiefs O is or how bad the Atlanta D is, 27-17 KC.

  • Justin R Groth

We win 24-17 not nearly as high scoring as most think it willow be because the clock keeps running just like Charles and hillis… The falcons get two BIG scores on low precentage big plays and one. long drive that is halteed to a field goal.

  • Calchiefsfan

I’m really thinking our offense is going to surprise a lot of people. That being said I also think we’re going to have to score 35 points to win this one. But you never know, look what Crennel and the Chiefs did to Green Bay and their high powered offense last year.

  • chiefridgy

    Chiefs 42 Falcons 24

    • AtlFalcon

Almost LOL just switch those scores

  • big chief

Well my sons just won their game 54-14 so Oklahoma and KC have to win for me to have a perfect football weekend so I pick Chiefs 28-17.
