Chiefs Sign Abe Elam

The Kansas City Chiefs added a little bit of depth at safety today by signing veteran Abe Elam. The team has announced the move, according to Jason La Canfora.

We told you a few days ago that the Chiefs had a visit with Elam.

"Elam entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Kent State. He is 30 and comes in at 6-0, 207.Abe started all 16 games for the Cowboys last year. Pro Football Focus graded him at a less than impressive -5.3 overall. He did receive positive marks for his run defense with a +2.2. You just don’t want him dropping into coverage with a -5.8."

This is an excellent move by the Chiefs. There aren’t a ton of quality safeties out there with starting experience right now. Though Elam may not be a guy you want starting for you on a regular basis, he should provide solid depth and veteran know-how. As I said when we found out about the workout, think of Elam as a younger, more durable Jon McGraw.
