Chiefs Solve Problems At TE, Promote OT

Maneri kills Troy Polamalu: Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

Watch your back Tony Moeaki.

Steve Maneri is coming for you.

From Josh Looney, via Twitter:

#Chiefs OT Steve Maneri changed jersey to No. 87 & has been moved to TE on official roster. Maneri played TE at Temple/caught 1 pass in ’11

That’s right folks. The 6-6, 290 Maneri is now a TE.

The good news is that he automatically moves past Jake O’Connell on the depth chart.

The bad news is that the Chiefs obviously think Maneri is so useless as a tackle, on a roster that contains Barry Richardson nonetheless, that they think his best shot to make the team is at TE.

Maneri actually lined up as a TE for one play against the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. He did more on that one play for the Chiefs than “Shabby” Sabby Piscitelli did the entire season. He caught a ball and nearly crushed Steelers safety Troy Polamalu to death after a kneeing him in the head. This had a huge impact on the game. Polamalu being out gave the Chiefs a slightly better than a snowballs chance in hell of scoring more points and it likely prevented Tyler Palko from breaking the NFL record for interceptions in one game.

Maneri played a whopping 29 snaps in 2011 so all we know about him is that he is big and probably better at playing TE than Jake O’Connell.

You have to start somewhere.

I remember watching that play, and thinking to myself... now we have a chance... but then I remembered Tyler Palko was at quarterback and I wept.

Just a replacement for Pope, a blocking TE who will seldom see a pass. At least Pioli will be comfortable, he is a NE guy. And if does work out we have the oft injured Moeaki, never was OConnel and NE Maneri to fill out the TE position for Daboll, lucky dog.

This is a joke right.I hope this isn't true. The chiefs really need to go into the off season and get a real tight end. I just don't believe Moeaki can stay healthy for the long term. He was hurt a lot in college.

I actually kind of like this move. Towards the end of the season they were actually running him out there on short yardage as a 6th OL quite a bit. Now he doesn't have to "report as eligible". Plus, I think this increases the chances that O'Connell doesn't make the team. Moeaki #1, new TE brought in to be #2, and Maneri as the #3/blocking TE.

No problem with this. They haven't had a good blocking tight end since Jason Dunn. Here's a guy that will essentially be a sixth lineman and will probably be better than every TE on the team not named Moeaki.

@ccseifert Probably correct. Cheap, fills a need #3 TE. Leaves money to spend on other positions.
