Romeo Crennel Sounds Like He’ll Start Cassel, Will Call Defense

Kansas City Chiefs head coach stopped by Sirius XM Blitz today to talk with Adam Schein, and he had some very interesting things to say.

Without coming right out and saying Matt Cassel is the team’s starter, he pretty much confirmed it.

“He’s taken us to the playoffs before and I’m looking forward to Matt taking us to the playoffs again,” said Crennel.

That isn’t the nail in the coffin of the dream for the Chiefs to get a franchise QB this offseason but it is certainly  a closing of the lid.

It could just be coachspeak. Right now Crennel doesn’t have another QB, so he might as well back the best one he’s got. Still, the conversation turned to QB controversy, something Crennel had to deal with when he was the head coach in Cleveland, and it did not sound like he was interested in dealing with it again in Kansas City.

From Schein’s Twitter:

"Romeo says he learned about eliminating QB controversies from CLE. And Romeo will keep calling the plays on defense. Perfect."

The good news in all this is that Romeo will continue to call the defensive plays. I anticipate he will promote an assistant internally to help him out with setting up and executing the game plan. This person will probably be called the “defensive coordinator” but it will be Romeo who calls the plays.
