Chiefs Need To Show More Aggression

by Chiefs

I had another great day at Arrowhead last Sunday!

Everything was fabulous but the football.

What disturbs me about Sunday’s game, and the current state of the team, is our lack of aggression.

The Chiefs are very tentative on offense as evidenced by the fact that our longest completion Sunday was 15 yards. They simply can’t get away with that when their running game is in the shape it is in.  Though Battle is serviceable, the absence of Charles hurts. If they are going to run short routes and dives between the tackles, they are never going to move the ball. The donkey butts stacked the box and put constant pressure on our hero Matt Cassel.

Defensively, the Chiefs are even less aggressive, which is absurd. It is a bend-but-don’t-break philosophy.

Romeo is one of the best defensive coaches in the league. I have to believe he has more imagination than this. We have zero exotic blitz packages. Why is he being so passive?

Watching the Chiefs play football the last two weeks has been an absolutely miserable experience.

Change is needed, and I say bring it on.

I am sorry Matt Cassel is hurt; I would not wish that on anyone. But Matt recently reminded us that situations like this are the reason he was able to move from a backup role with New England to a starting QB in Kansas City.

All in all, it should be an interesting weekend. The upcoming games, I believe, will seal Matt Cassel’s future with the Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL in general.

I’m just not optimistic for him.

So what do you think, Addicts? Will Matt be taking the snaps next year? I say no. What about Haley? I say the next training camp will see another head coach as well.

Bring back Damon Huard!!!!

Our play calling is atrocious and our defense has been suspect. We would like to give Crennel some credit, but he also has to take the blame. He was in charge when the Chiefs took some horrible beatdowns. Realizing that he doesn't have a lineman who could start on any other team, weak at safety, and short at linebacker, I can give him a partial pass. But being short on playmakers does not account for the lack of aggression. Sometimes this team just doesn't show enough heart. It all falls at the feet of the head coach, Todd Haley. Let's start with him, then Cassel.

I have been a loyal Cassel supporter through thick (headed decisions) and thin (accuracy and consistancy but believe his injury is the end for him here in KC. Go Stanzi! Haley deserves another year based on the successes in light of the injuries, lack of depth and the condition of the team he inherited. Players believe in him and support him.Romeo HAS to dial up some blitzes and I am concerned with his consistency and especially with his lack of adjustments the last two weeks.

@KC MikeG how much can you blame Haley for injuries? Is it poor conditioning?

@Arrowhead Adventurer@kc I'm not blaming Haley for the injuries and as much as many want to blame our poor start on Haley's approach in camp. I believe the delays in getting rookies/FA's into camp and the CBA limitations on padded practices had way more impact. I'm saying the injuries to our star players is one of many reasons Haley should get another year with a full offseason to earn a new contract.

@KC MikeG @kc yeah I don't know though he might not be properly conditioning the players.

@Arrowhead Adventurer@kc I was at camp and there was plenty of conditioning going on at the sacrafice of making progress getting the team ready to play. The players showed up in worse shape than last year due to no OTA's or rookie camp. Many players I would have expected more from showed up in not ready for football shape. Even Tamba was on his knees, sucking wind, so sick and had to sit out and be limited in practice. Everyone says the CBA effected all teams evenly but not all teams were even to begin with since many had players who took more responsibility for their conditioning. Some teams, especially young ones like us, needed more padded practices but the new CBA didn't allow.

@KC MikeG@kc poor Conditioning and improper technique could contribute I think. I was at camp too, it was a good one.

Its not always about the coach, its sometimes the players....blown tackles, missed assignments, like the blog no aggression from the players, and the most is no pressure at all from the line... whether it be running plays or pass plays

I want to give Crennel credit that he's good and all that but he's like Cassel great sometimes and bad all to often. I'm ready to let Crennel go and see what else is out there.

@Danny W cannot argue Dano. Good points.

Few things about the Chief's O has angered me more than the pathetic play-calling (TJ running directly into an opponent and immediately falling down, and then Muir calling his number again, is the worst). Our guys almost look afraid to try anything that might gain a first down. Just make Zorn our OC, put some of our rookie o-linemen in, and move on.

@mikhel the plays take two hours to get to cassel! It's bullshit.

I'd be disappointed if we didn't move on... from Cassel. I don't know about Haley.

@laddiemorse I think we must move on from Matt. I like the guy, he got us out of a BIG hole we had NOBODY that could stay on their feet in that position. But who do we get? Several teams have proven that you can get a good first round draft pick QB and hit the ground running. Maybe we can do that with a little Luck?

Heard this from Danan Hughes, old Chief, I paraphase, there is a basic problem with the Chiefs. They keep talking about a work in progress and getting a little better each game. He said every team he was on only talked about winning the championship, every year no matter how bad they might be or end up. It is a mind set the players need. They need to play up to be the best not be waiting for the next addition. His example was he was a raiders fan from age of 6, after Marty got ahold of him and pounded we hate the raiders, he changed and to this day cannot stand the team. It may be relistic to say the Clarks (sorta of like that) are a work in progress, the mental needs of the players are not being met and the team suffers for it.

Wow... he makes some great points. I can see why he's saying all those things. @tm1946

@tm1946 very interesting!

@tm1946 Danan Hughes who started 3 games over 6 years is an expert on HC strategies?? Pretty easy for Marty to talk about championships when you are in the playoffs 4 out of the 6 years he was a Chief. Reality is that, with the talent level/injuries we have, if Haley was preaching championships they would have carted him off in a white jacket. Making progress and getting better everyday should be every teams mantra. If you're not getting better then you are either stagnant or losing ground. Like Haley never says anything about championships - wrong.

@KC MikeG Sorry you did not get it. No, it is are the Clarks doing the most to put their players in the physical and mental mindset to win? Just making progress is a loser's mentality, you become a Cincy, Det, or Cleveland always trying to get better but always a bottomfeeder ready and willing to lose to the next good team. Actually your comments are a cheap shot and support the loser view, wait til next year when we get some help. The Clarks needed to break out and swagger a bit from being the AFC Champs, not coming up with some bi-polar warped view of a preseason and we don't need no stinkin' free agents, we will win ugly, work in progress. Hell every team is awork in progress. It is just about having a loser mentality and waiting for the next loss to come or do they may play a little better than their stats say they should and maybe win something.

If Pioli thinks it is the best way to protect his own shortcomings, i agree.
