The Morning Fix: Chiefs News From Around The Web

The game headed for overtime, and Ryan Succop eventually knocked through a 30-yard field goal to give the Chiefs a dramatic 23-20 victory against the Chargers on Monday night.

“Our guys were saying, ‘It ain’t over ’till it’s over. Keep playing, and digging,’ ” Chiefs coach Todd Haley said. “You never know what will happen.”

That is, if they’re not trying to figure out who their next head coach may be.

“I tell them to stop reading the newspapers,” Sparano told reporters. “But other than that, you people are the only ones writing their funerals, OK? So at the end of the day, those guys in that locker room believe they’re going to win games.…”

The Chiefs won’t need convincing. They knew that feeling all too well when they started 0-3. And look at them now.

Getting his first chance to see some real action on the field, Baldwin caught a key touchdown pass that helped the Chiefs beat the Chargers 23-20 on Oct. 31. He ended up becoming the leading receiver for the team, catching five passes for 82 yards and that touchdown. Dwayne Bowe(notes) had four catches for 62 yards, and Dexter McCluster(notes) had three catches for 28 yards. It was good enough to lead the Chiefs to the win, and quarterback Matt Cassel(notes) pushed the team to a 4-3 record and a tie for first place in the AFC West.

The Cassel to Baldwin connection could increase this week against the Miami Dolphins, and it presents a brand new option for fantasy football owners that need a new wide receivers. There are four teams with byes this week that could affect leagues, and the teams with the week off are the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, and Jacksonville Jaguars. There are a few receivers in that group of teams that will need to get replaced for a week, and Baldwin is a great guy to pick up.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson was named AFC Defensive Player Of The Week by the NFL on Tuesday after the Monday Night Football victory over the San Diego Chargers.

If you’ve been reading any postgame commentary or watched the game yourself, you know this is clearly deserved. (Frankly, he had a strong argument for it last week but his teammate CB Brandon Flowers took it home instead.)
