The Morning Fix

Haley said the Chiefs had 92 yards after the catch or after contact at San Diego, but 120 against Minnesota. And last week, at Indianapolis, the Chiefs picked up 250 combined yards after contact and catch.

“The run-after-the-catch has been a difference-maker for us,” Haley said. “Jackie Battle averaged close to 5 yards after contact on Sunday, which is out of this world for a running back.”

Bowe averaged 10 yards after the catch on his seven receptions, compared to zero yards after five catches at San Diego.

“That’s 70 yards,” Haley said. “Yards equal points, and there’s never been more evidence than last Sunday. … It changes the game dramatically, if all other things are equal.

Brian recalled a day during Marty’s head coaching career in Kansas City when he was at breakfast with his parents the morning after a devastating Chiefs loss to the Dolphins.

“At the table [next to us] some guys were talking about the game, saying, ‘Marty Schottenheimer doesn’t know what he’s doing, the guy’s a bozo,’ ” Brian recalled. “My mom, my sister and I were stewing, thinking, ‘God, can you believe this?’

After another slow start, the Chiefs offense found itself. Quarterback Matt Cassel played like an All-Pro, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was his old unstoppable self, and no-name running back Jackie Battle looked like a mix between Christian Okoye and Larry Johnson in their prime. The defense also did its share by giving up just 70 yards in the second half.

Off the field, last Sunday was the fourth Chiefs/Colts game I’ve seen in my former hometown since the 2006 Wild Card round. While it was by far the smallest Chiefs following of the lot, as always, they represented themselves well.

The annual bye week is an NFL team’s only off weekend from late January through the end of the season. Preparations for the Oakland Raiders will resume Monday morning.

While we wait, here are 10 thoughts as the Chiefs sit idle…
