The Morning Fix

Facing third and 8 on what turned out to be the game-winning drive Sunday against the Colts, Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel dumped a pass over the middle to Keary Colbert for a 15-yard gain.

Three plays later, Cassel connected with Steve Breaston for a touchdown that sent the Chiefs into the bye week on a two-game winning streak.

Had Baldwin been healthy, it’s debatable whether Colbert would have made the club’s 53-man roster out of training camp. Colbert has instead become one of the NFL’s rarest of comeback stories after spending the last two seasons out of football and the 2010 campaign as a tight ends coach at USC. His emergence in the slot has allowed the Chiefs to keep McCluster at running back.

“We’ve asked (Colbert) to do a lot of different things,” Haley said. “He got into the backfield a couple of times and was cutting off or trying to cut off defensive ends (because of an injury to FB Le’Ron McClain). The one third down (catch) there on the fringe was just a tremendous, tremendous route.

I know the Chiefs drafted Jon Baldwin in the first round and signed Steve Breaston in free agency. But this offense could be very dangerous with all three of these receivers.

Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli has done an outstanding job in giving his core players contract extensions. The fact that Bowe has not been given a new deal yet could be a sign that there is hesitation on one of the two sides.

But, in the end, I think extending Bowe would be a better avenue than trading Bowe.
