He didn’t want me just to stand pat,” Warner said. “… He continued to push me weekly, continued to put things on me and tell me, ‘Hey, you can be better than you’ve already been. You can do this better, you can help our team win by doing these kinds of things.’ ”
In 2008, Warner passed for 4,583 yards, the second-highest total of his career — more yards, even, than when Warner led the St. Rams to a Super Bowl win and Warner was chosen MVP for the first time. Under Haley’s guidance in 2008, Warner again led his team to the Super Bowl, and years after being relegated to backup duty with the New York Giants, Warner’s rebirth almost certainly will earn him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
uccop (6-2, 218) was five-for-five on field goal attempts with a PAT, tallying a career-high 16 points en route to a 22-17 victory vs. Minnesota (10/2) at Arrowhead Stadium. The South Carolina product was successful on two 50 yard field goal attempts, tying the club’s franchise record. Succop now has five field goals of 50 yards in his career, the fourth-highest total in team annals. Kansas City’s placekicker connected on a career-long 54-yard field goal in the third quarter to give Kansas City a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. His five field goals tied the club’s record for most field goals in a single game, joining K Jan Stenerud and K Nick Lowery.
On a day when pick-sixes were plentiful around the league, Hali made his mark as a pass rusher, relentlessly pursuing Vikings QB Donovan McNabb. Hali finished tied for the team lead in tackles with seven (six solo), recorded both of Kansas City’s sacks and was credited with hitting McNabb five times in the game. Three of those QB hits came in the second half, when the Chiefs pulled away and held off Minnesota to get their much-needed first win of the season, 22-17. Hali’s second-quarter sack of McNabb brought up a 3rd-and-15 play from the Chiefs’ 20.
Indianapolis is missing QB Peyton Manning, who had two off-season neck surgeries. In his place, QBs Kerry Collins and Curtis Painter have each opened for the Colts. Painter threw a pair of touchdown passes to WR Pierre Garcon last week at Tampa Bay (10/3).
The Chiefs will enjoy a bye next week (10/16) before traveling to Oakland on Sunday, Oct. 23 for a contest with the Raiders. Indianapolis begins a stretch of three-consecutive road games with a contest at Cincinnati on Sunday, Oct. 16.
