Time To Play “Chiefs: Chew or False”

by Chiefs

Take ten true, or false, statements about the Kansas City Chiefs and depending on your opinion, or mood, pick the one you agree, or disagree, with and “chew” on it. Then spit out your opinion.

It’s really not as disgusting as it sounds.

I’ll start by giving you my take and then its’ your turn to… punt, pass or spit.

1. Justin Houston should have been our 1st round pick.

True. In the early spring I was pining for the Chiefs to select Justin Houston in the first round and I wrote a couple of pieces in favor of that. That was pre-dubbie-debacle. Now, I can safely say that at least he deserved to be taken in the first. My oh my, that “man” can play football and I can’t wait to see Houston and Hali launching at the same time, at the same target and arriving at the same moment. I heard one fan say recently that this is the most excited they have been about the Chiefs rush since the days of DT and Neil. I think that’s a tad premature but, I can see the potential. BTW… I’ve seen enough of pooty Studie to believe that Houston should be the starter on September 11th.

2. The Chiefs have solved their WR issues this off season.

False. For now. Like any other week, during the past two years, I have to have a “wait and see” attitude when it comes to our wide outs. During the past two years… I thought it could be Bowe. Then I thought it would be Chambers but, that was when Bowe was in Haley’s dog house. Then, Bowe turns into Mr. All World this past season when no other receiver could get open. So, we draft Baldwin and sign Breaston but, I’ve only seen Jerheme Urban show any flashes this preseason. Once again… I don’t know what to make of it. I do believe that Haley has a plan but, so far, in his first couple of seasons, he only has Bowe to show for all his “developing” at the WR position. I also think Haley has some Riverboat gambler in his soul and right now he’s neither playing or showing his cards.

3. Barry Richardson is going to get Matt Cassel murdered.

True (but, for Matt’s sake, I hope not). I don’t know about off the field but, on the field there is evidence that he’s gone backwards. I’ve been looking back at game tape and BRich is either going to set a record for holding penalties so that he can save Matty’s hide or he’s going to be a pallbearer. I don’t know what’s going on with him although, I was a fan of his progress last season. Now, even with the small sample of plays we have seen of Jared Gaither, I’d be more in favor of playing him at RT. BRich has been that bad.  Signing someone who may be getting released next week would be better than BRich… and I don’t even know who that would be. . Either way, I’m of the… try something, try anything… opinion.

4. Obama could hire Clark Hunt to balance the budget.

True. If the preseason is any kind of true indication of our needs at certain positions then we should spend some of the Chiefs plentiful salary cap that’s burning a hole in my pocket protractor. I’m all in favor of continuing to keep some cap space available for the leverage it affords the Chiefs but, there comes a time to step up and throw the deep ball. Come on Clark… go long.

Cap update after the break. Brace yourself.

If you’re wondering where the Chiefs stand with the cap here’s the update as of Monday, August 29th.

5. Ricky Stanzi is the second coming of Tom Brady.

False. Not yet anyway. He looks good. He is also a bright spot in an otherwise preseason black hole. I’m not comfortable with the Brady comparisons because there are very few QB’s who will ever be that good. Stanzi has escapability. Stanzi has pocket presence even though he has the escapability (something Michael Vick may never learn). Stanzi appears to have an equally accurate deep ball as he does short ball. Stanzi has good touch on screens and it’s too bad he has to play with the 3rd team all the time because he has to dump the ball off too often. Stanzi also looks like he has command in the huddle and does a good job of directing team mates between plays. There’s a lot to like here and I’m betting Pioli and Haley are confirming now what they probably thought when they drafted him: he’s a steal.

6. There’s cause for concern based on this preseason.

True , or… well hell yea, but I can’t think of a team in the league that isn’t concerned about what’s going on with their squad. The Chiefs seem to be taking the “trial-by-fire” approach with their young pups. Plus, I hear a double standard being spoken by so many, that the preseason “doesn’t matter” but, then everyone is upset when we don’t win these games. Preseason may not “count” but, it matters. To a degree. I’m sure no one recalls, off the top of their head, what the Packers record was last preseason. IOW… what happens in the preseason… stays in the preseason.

However, I’m hoping that the Chiefs not being competitive in preseason games, will not carry over to the regular season. So, yes, you could say I have my concerns.

7. Chiefs need to sign a veteran back-up QB.

False. If the Chiefs had done that earlier in the preseason I’d have supported that move. Now, at this moment, they will probably find fewer choices than if they wait a couple of weeks or even into the regular season, because of the cuts that are coming. Plus, I’m liking what I’m seeing out of both Tyler Palko and Ricky Stanzi. Wish I could say the same for Cassel.

8. The OL has more issues than the DL.

True. If you’re basing an opinion on the preseason then yes. I already addressed the BRich issue but, there will be more problems than RT if we’re trending off of these 3 games. Not one offensive lineman has played consistently well. Albert, Hudson, Wiegmann, Asamoah and BRich have all missed assignments or been beaten repeatedly. It’s not as bad as the cave-in performance of two years ago but, it’s not looking good. The Rams made each of our OL look bad at one time or the other and I’m not talking about the whole game, I’m talking about the in first quarter alone. Comparing the OL to the DL… Jackson has looked good and Dorsey will be better than last year. Gregg is going to need help in the middle. Gaither played and did alright except for the penalty. But, he played and that’s a positive.

9. Derrick Johnson is going to the Pro Bowl.

True. At least, he should! If DJ continues to play the way he’s played this preseason then he should be going to Hawaii in February. IMO Derrick has been the best Chiefs player so far this preseason. His play has finally begun to remind me of the way he used to dominate at the University of Texas. Now, he’s not only flowing to the ball but going through people and intercepting the ball all over the field. He’s going to help make the Chiefs D an exciting D to watch this year.

10. The best performance has been by the cheerleaders.

True, and I haven’t even looked at them yet. But, whatever they’ve had going on between the pom-poms has got to be better than what’s been going on between the stripes. And, if things don’t change soon, my attention will shift faster than you can say, “Give me an F.”

@laddiemorse 2010 thank goodness! We'll play on par, but lose more due to schedule. Obama BTW gave up on a 8:00 pm ET speech. DOH. He went to 7:30 pm, so still conflicts with pre-game stuff, but should be done by game time. First time I have seen a President change a speech time twice - first because of congress saying it was not convenient, and then the NFL. Rough week for the Bears Fan in Chief.

I seriously doubt Baldwin will be playing in week one... plus... I have the strong feeling that he will be in Haley's dog house for awhile... and who knows... maybe all year. Although... I'm hoping Baldwin has learned his lesson with his losing time because of his skirmish with the Ninja Master Jones. @Tom82

8. Which OLD Chiefs? 2010 or 2009? @Celtks

@Tom82 Looking forward to what he can do when up to speed but against the Bills, might be able to carry one water bottle out during time outs?

1) False. Shrewd buyers get more bang for their buck. And have more bucks to bang with. 2) True. Bowe will be even better than last year w/o being doubled! He already looks incredible. I got a good look at Baldwin in camp and when he returns, 9/11 or 9/18, Yes he will have to get up to speed but he will make a big impact mark my words. Plus Breaston and Urban are healthy. Tucker, now our #4 was #2 last year is progressing nicely too. 3) True. How can you be good at run blocking but have no clue how to protect - Hell just get in teh way! I thought for sure we would acquire someone to replace Richardson or atleast make him a#2. I'm praying Gaither will stay healthy and be able to step up soon and play RT. Forget about moving Albert. 4) True. I'd rather have Hunt underspend on the right players than overspend on the wrong ones. We will have the $$$ to retain all of our developing talent and still bring in the big hitter or two next year to take us to the show. 5) True but premature. He's looked very good while running for his life with the #3's, pocket awareness, arm, scrambling but he still has much to learn like the sacks he took vs. throwing the ball away. I know most are disappointed with Cassel so far but in his very limited play (27 passes in 3 games) he has made good decisions (except for time out!). Brady's are rare so to say Stanzi will be a Brady is premature (and no one likes that!). 6) False. The preseason SHOULD have never meant less to the fans. The games don't count and the only way they do matter is to help eliminate the guys not playing for us this year. Don't get me wrong I have been there and hate watching it too but it is not the product or approach that will be on the field come 9/11 so why be so quick to put a fork in us? Even when our starters are in there we haven't seen our 2011 Chiefs. No one means more to how this team performs than Charles and he has only carried the ball SIX times w/o a Reception - Cassel has thrown 27 passes - Bowe has 4 receptions - McClain has touched the ball 3 times - Hali has 2 tackles and NO sacks - QL and M.Johnson have just as many solo tackles as DJ - Breaston has 3 catches - JBal has 1 catch - hardly representative of our "starting" offense is it? No way you can predict our 2011 performance based on that small of a sample of what the best players will contribute. 7) False. Zorn, 3 balls in a row in the double stacked garbage cans in the corner of the end zone and he's already under contract! I think both have potential, especially when they both have gotten better while running for their lives / dogging busses at rush hour. I pray for Matt's health but if we end up having to start either one it will be behind our starting OL it will be a big step up from Brokie. 8) True. Solution: BRich plays run plays only setting up the D, then we catch them off guard and throw or please God let Gaither step up. 9) True, Without a doubt. 10) False. Tucker, Palko/Stanzi, Houston, Bailey, McClain, Gregg/Powe, Sheffield, Breaston, Urban, Bowe, and McCluster are all either better or better than what we had last year. The cheerleaders look fine but they are just a distraction from what I am there for - a pleasant distraction though.

@Arowhead_Addict At least the DEs would slow down on their way to Cassel, which is more than BRich has been able to do.

12. BONUS QUESTION - Has a President ever been impeached for torpedoing the NFL Season Opener - NO (But it does fit under the framework of high crimes and misdemeanors)

1. Baldwin will be a starter Week 1 - NO 2. Gaither will be a starter Week 1 - NO 3. Powe will be a starter Week 1 - NO 4. Bailey will be a starter Week 1 - NO 5. Houston will be a starter Week 1 - NO 6. That means we are screwed - NO (But we sure could use these guys early and often in contributing roles. Don't expect Baldwin to anchor a spot anytime early, he has simply missed too much now.) 7. Hudson will be a starter - YES 8. The new Chiefs are going to look a lot like the old Chiefs - YES (Until we get the new talent worked into more significant roles. The biggest single issue will be the lack of anything new to throw to other than Breaston.) 9. I should be burnt at the stake for suggesting 8-8 and lucky to get it - Urm, we'll see 10. I'll be right about Haley's preseason strategy, and we'll we will play starters like it's the third game, not the 4th against Green Bay. - I started at 25% odds yes, then 50%, now I'm upping that to 75%. 11. Obama is an idiot for scheduling his speech directly conflicting with the Packers-Saints opening game - It was not smart, either NBC shows the game as planned and nobody watches Obama, or they change the game time, and everyone is pissed at Obama.

i just pray that baldwin is ready to go against buffalo. that changes alot imo.

Twin sons from different planets.

I agree with every single one of your answers. Talk about Bizarro world.

1.) The way you worded this, I majorly disagree. Has Houston proved that he would have been worth a 1st round pick? Absolutely. Does that mean we should have taken him with the 1st? Absolutely not. Even if a guy has 1st round talent and you can wait until the 3rd, you take your major steal and then showcase him to the rest of the league. If we should have taken Houston with our 1st this year, then we should have taken Jamaal with our first in 2008. Neither should've happened. 2.) I think the Chiefs have gone a long way to solve this, but they haven't solved it yet. The very little I saw of Baldwin has me intrigued. Urban, Breaston, and everyone else hasn't been spectacular this off-season, but nobody has. The offense has looked plain and generic. I don't expect that to remain the same. 3.) I loved, loved, loved BRich's improvement last year. I was against him last year, and I was excited to see him prove me wrong. Now I'm sad to see he proved me right. (Does that even make sense?) I hope that Gaither can prove to be healthy and effective enough to take over the LT spot. The Chiefs could move Albert to RT and upgrade 2 spots on the OL. Or we can see who gets cut by Saturday and pick up a veteran to be a stop-gap at that position. 4.) I'd rather see Hunt underpay the great players we have and are performing for us (Flowers, Carr, Bowe) than overpay for players who aren't performing for us (Chambers). There wasn't 1 player this off-season I though the Chiefs HAD to go get but didn't because they didn't offer enough. Clark has written the checks he needs to to make the team competitive. 5.) Absolutely false. If you're going to say he's the second coming of Tom Brady, then he's also the second coming of Ryan Leaf. 6.) There's cause for concern based on every preseason. Different teams have different agendas during the preseason. This year has just a little more concern because of the lack of OTA's and other times for the players to get comfortable with each other. 7.) I've seen enough out of Palko and Stanzi to be comfortable (not happy) if they have to step in to replace Matt Cassel. I hope we don't have to rely on them for the entire season, but other teams do have it works. Cincinatti, Washington, Seattle all come to mind. 8.) This one is true. I'm excited for our DLine. Jackson looks to have made major improvements this off-season, Dorsey looks above-average-to-good as usual, Gregg/Powe/Toribio is an upgrade over Smith/Edwards/Toribio. Gilberry is supposedly having an excellent camp. The OL, however, has AT LEAST 3 players that concern me. BRich has already been covered, Albert needs to shine at LT, and who knows how long Weigmann can hold down the C spot at an acceptable level. Throw in the fact that we don't know much about Gaither's health, if Hudson is ready to step in at C, or what the back-up tackle situation is going to be, and this could be a scary (scary bad, not scary good) year on the offensive line. 9.) I hope so. He deserves it. When he is on, I won't take a single MLB/ILB in the league over him. When he's off, there's about 20 I'd take over him. If he can hold on to every ball he gets his hands on, he's going to the Pro Bowl easily. 10.) I'd say McCluster has had the best preseason performance. He still looks so small and fragile, but he's looked very fluid with the ball in his hands.

I think former pro bowl right tackle Jon Stinchcomb was released by the Saints this year. He played in the pro bowl two years back when they made it to the dance. He's a gamble because of injuries but when he's healthy he could come in and start or atleast give some depth.

Excellent post... CHEW of the Day Award! But then... the day's not over!

1) False. Why spend a first when we can get him in the 3rd. 2) TBA. Haven't got a good look at Baldwin. Chiefs have been running vanilla plays. Haven't seen an awesome standout, but problem might be solved. Solved this year is a different question. 3) True. I didn't want to retain Richardson to begin with. But with the veteran RTs all going someplace else, the Chiefs got stuck with him. I'm hoping Gaither will be able to step up soon and play an OT position. 4) True. I'd rather have Hunt underspend on the right players than overspend on the wrong ones. 5) False. He's looked very interesting, but Brady's are too rare to say Stanzi will be a Brady. 6) False. The preseason has never meant less to the fans or more to the teams. With the wonky offseason this year, how teams approach the preseason had to change. It's so unusual that no one really knows how to properly evaluate it. The games don't count but they do matter. But they matter only to the teams this year. 7) False. Hopefully the issue doesn't come up except for when the Chiefs are blowing someone out and want to give their backups experience. Might've said true earlier in free agency. We can always reactivate Zorn, right? 8) Tralse. I think both may have some problems, but it's tough to evaluate based on the little we've seen and on the fact that I'm not sure we've seen the starting OL take the field in a preseason game. I will say the penalties need to stop. (Richardson I'm looking in your direction) 9) True, if he holds on to the ball. 10) False. Stanzi, Houston, and McCluster are all contenders. Have yet to see cheerleaders so they currently have no grade.

Boy do we agree. Major mistake on your part. Only exception is 4 , saving 90+ million in cap room over last 3 yeas is not a sign of competence. No it just means players wanted no part in your vision or you could not pull the trigger on what was available/needed or you are just plain cheap. Country is in need of help but would you want Clark putting what he saved in his pocket?

Jon Asamoah will be an upgrade over Brian Waters? True. From what I've seen of this kid int he preseason he looks good.

The cheerleaders should play RT instead of B-Rich. We'd get all kinds of holding penalties against the defense.

Arowhead_Addict At least the DEs would slow down on their way to Cassel, which is more than BRich has been able to do.
