Nikolozi’s Crazy Idea of the Week: Why Stanzi is Brilliant Edition

So, let’s be honest, we need an answer at backup QB, perhaps more than any other position.

The Chiefs need a reliable backup QB. Brodie Croyle’s time on the field last year left me baffled as to why he has a job in the NFL. Normally I would say you don’t grab a backup in the 5th round, but we still don’t really know what we have in Matt Cassel.

His two productive years in the NFL came when he stepped in for Brady on the best coached team in the NFL and last year under the tutelage of Charlie Weis. Weis is gone, and while I like Jim Zorn as a QB guru who may be able to continue Cassel’s development, the Chiefs need both a backup and a possible insurance policy that Zorn can mold from day 1. Stanzi is the type of smart QB’s who excels in the “high percentage” throws in the same way that Kurt Warner was able to do while lighting up the Cardinals under Haley. To be clear, I am NOT saying we throw Cassel overboard, but I think picking a QB here is a good short, medium, and possibly long-term investment.

Stanzi can be special. Short. Medium. And long. And he better because everyone else is breathing down his neck.

Not to toot a draft picks’ horn way too early, but hell, I’m gonna do it. Stanzi is the man.
