According to Yahoo Sports, John Elway is a vain douche bag.

Oops, I mean, according to Yahoo Sports, Hall of Fame QB and Denver <del>Broncos </del>Donkeys vice president, had his lawyers contact a Fort Collins, Colorado punk band about changing their band name.

Why is Elway concerned about the name of a punk band?

Because they are calling themselves “Elway.”

First of all, why would any punk band, grocery store chain or male stripper want to go by a crappy name like “Elway?” It sounds like a Spanish candy bar.

Anyway, apparently Elway (the douche, not the band) actually cared enough about this to have his lawyers call these guys.

In other news, here is a list of companies that I will be suing for using the name “Allen” without my permission:

December 13, 2006 was a sad day for fans of the Kansas City Chiefs. That was the day that Chiefs owner and founder Lamar Hunt passed away. The man did so much for football in general, not just our team, that it was impossible to be anything but sad. However, I remember thinking that day that there was one possible bright spot. The word on the street was that Lamar’s son Clark would likely be the new guy at the top of the Chiefs totem pole and that he did not share his father’s unquestioning loyalty to Carl Peterson. For me that was a bright spot on a very dark day in Chiefs history.

In the years that have passed since that day Clark has really flown under the radar. Public comments are few and far between. There is a pretty wide range of opinions on the job he’s doing. If there wasn’t a lockout in place, we probably wouldn’t be talking about him at all. However, with the current lockout situation many are starting to question Hunt, specifically his spending the last few seasons. Others are willing to credit Hunt for the current success the team is having. After the break I’ll look at some of the facts we have regarding Hunt and the timeline since he took control of the team. Then I’ll explore a few different outlooks on the head Chief, Clark Hunt.

Watch Jamaal Juke. Kyle face-plants himself. Juke, Jamaal, juke.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has tied San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates for 10th in ESPN.com’s Power Rankings Series.

ESPN has been using a panel of “experts” to rank players at various positions all offseason. At first there appeared to be some structure to what they were doing. I assumed they would cycle through each position group until they had ranked all of them. You know, do the RB’s then the WR’s, then the DT’s and so forth.

I apparently thought wrong.

I am now thoroughly convinced that ESPN has constructed a wooden “Lockout Wheel Of Content Hilarity” that they spin each week to decide what kind of ridiculous rankings they will have their “experts” vote on each week. To date, they’ve ranked the top ten owners and the top ten helmets. HELMETS!

This week, they came up with an even more confusing and convoluted set of criteria. Instead of continuing to rank the position groups, it appears the wheel landed on the “rank the best offensive players in the NFL but you can’t include QB’s because while QB’s are indeed offensive players, they are so important to the offensive process that the list would likely be dominated by QB’s and we already ranked QB’s so we want to get some different kinds of names in there, you know and who knows, maybe even a lineman will make this list and it won’t be as boring as just a set of rankings ranking lineman because really, who cares about lineman, they aren’t exciting and don’t score TD’s and maybe next week we can do jerseys or cleats or something” spot on the wheel.

More after the jump.

Quick trivia question: Who exactly is Hannibal Hamlin?

a) The cannibalistic serial killer in Silence of the Lambs.
b) The star of the hit ‘80s legal/inappropriate-office-sex drama L.A. Law.
c) The Kansas City Chiefs’ all-time leader in punts inside the 20-yard line.
d) The Vice President under Abraham Lincoln from 1861-65.

Well, as anyone with either a passion for 19th-Century American political history or access to Google already knows, the answer is not a), or b), or even c). Hamlin, a U.S. Senator from Maine, was the other half of Lincoln’s ticket. He was later appointed ambassador to Spain, and was considered, I’m sure, an all-around great guy by his friends as well as the staff at his favorite diner in Bangor.

What does this fact have to do with the Kansas City Chiefs? Well, in and of itself, absolutely nothing. So why do I bother mentioning it (other than as a bit of minutiae I picked up in eager anticipation of last night’s premiere of Ridley Scott’s new docu-thriller Gettysburg on the History Channel*)?

*Seriously. It was AWE-some. You should check it out on rerun.

Consider: Passed over for a second term in favor of Andrew Johnson, Hannibal Hamlin’s tenure as #2 expired in March 1865, mere weeks before Lincoln’s career-and-life-ending-injury at Ford’s Theater forced Johnson to enter the presidency with little more than a few practice speeches under his belt. Indeed, he was not up to the task, and the country spent the rest of the decade mired in a long, painful rebuilding process known as Reconstruction. Congress even tried to cut Johnson before his contract was up.

I think you know where I’m going with this: Whether in the White House or the National Football League, a good backup is essential, particularly at the leadership position.
