On ESPN’s new football show “Audibles” some very big names had a lot of praise for Kansas City Chiefs 5th round draft pick Ricky Stanzi, including Hall of Fame QB Steve Young.
Young and ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper gushed over Stanzi.
“They got Ricky Stanzi in the fifth; he’s the next Matt Schaub,” said Young after comparing KC’s first round pick, Jonathan Baldwin, to WR Terrel Owens.
More after the jump.
ESPN’s Mel Kiper also joined the show and continued gushing about Stanzi, an activity he started pretty much the second the Chiefs drafted the former Iowa QB.
“Matt Cassel, look out, in a couple of years, this guy’s going to challenge you for your job,” Kiper said.
I just love the selection of Stanzi. One of the key points of his background for me is that he comes from playing in a pro-tyle offense. While this is certainly no guarantee of success, it will certainly help shorten the learning curve for the young QB.
Stanzi will also get to learn from Cassel, who is a similar QB. Both are tall and fairly mobile. Neither has a particularly strong arm so accuracy is key for their game. Cassel became much more accurate in 2010 and Stanzi saw a nice jump in his accuracy at Iowa last season.
Stanzi will not only provide a solid QB project for the Chiefs but he is also a guy who should fit into Todd Haley’s offensive system well.
Now the only question is, which Chiefs backup QB is going to get the axe? Brody Croyle or Tyler Palko?
