The Dark Horse: Brooks Reed

by Chiefs

Okay, he looks like Clay Matthews, but can he play like him?

KC Chiefs fans may want to add another name to the list of possibilities at pick #21. Arizona DE/OLB Brooks Reed has seen his stock continue to rise ever since he put up fantastic numbers at the combine. Now in Todd McShay’s latest mock draft he has the Chiefs taking Reed at #21. Most “experts” would say this is too high for Reed and they may be right. However, as I pointed out in my last Armchair Addict post, Scott Pioli has some specific criteria he looks for in draft picks and Reed holds up to the list pretty well.

Experience? He was a three year starter. The Pac-10 isn’t the SEC, but he still faced some big time competition.

Leader? Not only a team captain, but known as a fiery on the field leader.

Character? I don’t have any “janitor” info, but most scouting reports say he is very smart, a hard worker, and a great leader.

Loves football? No question. I even read several places that he loves playing special teams.

So what do you think Addicts? Do you like Reed? Is #21 too high?

I’ll leave some links to his scouting reports after the break.

I remember a rather unheralded DE/OLB coming out of the PAC-10/12 with a tendency for being a fiery leader with a flowing mane of hair........could Reed be Clay Matthews 2.0? In addition, Reed decimated Iowa's O Line during that game out in Tempe. I'm sure the coaching staff has plenty of film on this guy. Wouldn't be upset with this pick in the second at all.

Count me in for HOPING this being our pick. I like this pick more than Phil Taylor, I like it more than Gabe Carimi, I like it more than Derek Sherrod, I like it more than Akeem Ayers. But WILL the Chiefs take Reed? Meh... He is versatile, he can rush the passer, he plays with a mean streak, and he's pretty sharp. All the reasons you listed are good argument for Pioli picking Brooks. My issue is that any time you take a DE and transition them to a 3-4 OLB, it's going to require time and it's going to be a project. This draft, with the CBA still being debated, is going to be very unfriendly to projects. And Pioli is known to be in love with taking players with high floors. I think he's going OL. He shouldn't, and I'd be elated if he proved me wrong and plucked Brooks Reed, but I think that's going to be his move.

I don´t think in the first, but in the 2 hell yeah!!!...no brainier...Haili on one side and Reed on they other, both with that non stop motor, now thats a pass rush...

National Football Post on Reed -- "He had 12 total private workouts, some undisclosed. An AFC West scout said he significantly upgraded his grade on Reed after watching him play against Iowa in person." I wonder is that scout a member of the Chiefs?

I kind of hope it was. I have to admit, I really like Reed. I watched a couple of their games this year and the guy in an animal. For me it comes down to if they think he can cover. If he isn't going to be any better then Hali in coverage then I think we need to look elsewhere.

If it was an Iowa game, you can bet one of Pioli's boys was there.
