The Morning Fix

The players presumably think they’ll win before Judge Nelson, and the owners presumably like their chances before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, where 13 of the 16 judges were appointed by Republican administrations, which in a loose red state/blue state sense will make them more inclined to side with the league over the players on the threshold legals issues relating to whether the courts can enjoin a lockout and whether the NFLPA* effectively decertified.

The Chiefs have some thin spots on defense, despite their young age, and need to keep an eye on their cornerback situation. One starter, Brandon Carr doesn’t have a contract for next season while the other, Brandon Flowers, has a deal that expires after this year.

Jacksonville Jaguars: Coach Jack Del Rio seeks an explosive pass rusher in an AFC South division headlined by quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Matt Schaub. Veteran Aaron Kampman suffered a second consecutive season-ending torn ACL injury as the Jaguars generated just 26 sacks. That’s four fewer than the combined total of last season’s top two individual sackers, Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware (15½) and Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali (14½).

As the 2011 NFL Draft nears, one of the more intriguing scenarios surrounding the Chiefs draft day strategy involves the art of the trade. We took a look at trade history involving the 21st overall pick last week and, to say the least, the position has been extremely active in recent years.

Chiefs General Manger Scott Pioli touched on his thought process behind draft day trades during a pre-draft press conference several days ago. Specifically, Pioli focused on trading down for more picks.

Spielman has been consistent in praising Weber.

Weber is regarded as a later round option or a priority free agent, but the four-year starter’s stock could be rising after a fairly impressive Pro Day workout.

Among the teams that have displayed interest in Weber, according to a league source: the New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and the Carolina Panthers.
