My Chief Concerns: I Bet You Did Not Know This

by My Chief Concerns

Off the top of your head can you name a Chiefs player who statistically regressed and played worse than the year before?  I know it is difficult to do so considering the fact that the Chiefs played beyond all expectations in 2010, but this player did not.  I will give you a hint.  He is not irrelevant anymore.    He is:

The answer after the jump…

Kicker Ryan Succop.  So what happened to Mr. Irrelevant?

If you are Scott Pioli, should you be worried about Ryan?  Ryan’s field goal percentage dropped significantly from 86.2 percent to 76.9 percent.  As far as field goal percentage is concerned that places him at 32nd in the league last year of all kickers who attempted field goals (he was 13th in his rookie season, 2009).   I will reiterate that again, he was 32nd in the league in field goal percentage!

Only Rian Lindell, David Buehler, Dan Carpenter, Graham Gano, Shane Andrus and Aaron Pettrey were worse in 2010.  That is not good company, considering most if not all of these kickers are most likely going to be replaced, if they have not been already.

Since competition for every position is key, I suspect there is a high probability that the Kansas City Chiefs will be bringing in another kicker to camp this year (if camp happens).  Unlike last year, Ryan Succop should not be the only kicker in camp.

In fact, how surprised would you be if we spent another pick on a kicker?  I am not saying it is going to happen, but the drop off cannot go unnoticed.

As noted earlier by other commentators, kicking stats can vary year to year so the emphasis should be on " clutch performance".... which leads me to conclude that our kicking game is average and not marginal. No need to trade or pursue in draft just yet.

Vermeil and Marty did not like to deal with Kickers, to many mental issues for their tastes. I believe Succop will settle into whatever he is this year (if there is a "this year"). If he fails, he will have other chances with other teams. In the NFL, kickers seem to get passed around like ex-wifes anyway. But what does it say about the 09 draft. Jackson has to step up or it was a wasted effort at the 100% level, doesn't it?

I'm not worried about this at all. According to what I've read in Football Outsiders Almanac, field goal percentage is almost entirely random from season to season. The 2 kickers they specifically cited were Vanderjagt and Vinatieri. An example with Vanderjagt was that one season his percentage was 74, the next year was 100, and the next year was 80.

Right. You don't want to get cute with kickers in the NFL. Sure it would be great to have a guy who is almost always automatic but kicking is a tough business. If you have someone who is pretty decent and can get you the 3 points most of the time if you get him close enough then you should hang onto him. Especially if he shows over the course of a couple of seasons that he isn't a head case. Remember when Nick Folk had that great season and then couldn't hit anything? Remember Medlock.

in kicking, at least with special teams...there is a such thing as a good miss...succop's issue has never been that he is a shank kicker, hes just either been short from 53-55, or just left/right I see NO problem here till people get in his head(hopefully they wont) and force him to overcorrect hes FINE

Im with Wood. I would want to see his avg attempt distance the last two years, plus the number of attempts taken. I bet the numbers arent that bad.

Maybe we should just let Colquitt punt and kick and free up a roster spot. I mean he would really only have to kick off and punt, and we'll go for it when we're in scoring position

I like Succop. He doesn't have the booming leg or automatic accuracy, but he's not terrible. I never worry when he goes out on the field (although, I guess maybe I should?). I'm confident when he steps out on the field under 51 yards that the Chiefs are going to score 3 points. He's a good clutch kicker who does well under pressure, so that makes up for his lack of leg and automatic-ness a little bit.

He missed a kick in OT.....u sure he's so clutch?

he also made a kick after the miss...so...yeah...clutch

I'm worried too. Moving up the kick off will cover up for his lack of leg on the kick offs but he does not have the leg to win the game from outside the 45 for us. Period. I do give him credit for learning from his miss in the game vs Buffalo last year to make the correction against the wind in OT to win the game but then again shouldn't he of made that adjustment the 1st time and not missed the chip shot?? And if Haley hadn't called time out at the last minute (GREAT COACHING that I have heard no one give Haley Props for!)Buffalo would have won the game w/o him having that 2nd chance.

I bet he had the highest avg. distance for FG attempts. We went for it on 4th down inside the 20 yard line so many times. Not worried about Succop at all.

Succop is an average kicker. He isn't lights out, automatic but neither was Lawrence Tynes and we saw what happened when we dumped him got a "better" kicker. Way to go Herm.

Interesting thought............... Here's the thing, though. Todd Haley puts even less of an emphasis on kickers than usual, because he leads the league in 4th down attempts. Also, the NFL rule change moving the kickoff up also demerits the value of a kicker. So my guess is that we're sticking with Succop another two years, at least. Besides, he does pretty well in "crunch time" kicks. I like the guy -- he's not a disaster in kickoff coverage, and he's not a headcase. %s always fluctuate so I'm happy to give him another two seasons before we consider going in another direction.

I was surprised at his stats. But, I am a little worried. Haley's use or non use is of little importance. When he was used Ryan's FG percentage dropped 10 percent.
