You may remember a couple of weeks ago we told you that the NFL ruled in favor of the Chiefs when the team filed a tampering charge against the Detroit Lions. While the details of what exactly the Lions did never were revealed, the NFL levied a minor punishment against Detroit. The Lions had to swap 5th round draft picks with the Chiefs, moving KC up and Detroit down, as well as forfeit their 2011 seventh round pick.

Now ESPN.com is reporting that the NFL has given those tampering Lions back their 2011 seventh rounder and will instead strip them of their 2012 seventh rounder.

The Lions appealed the ruling, and in what I guess we should call a semi-victory, the NFL instead will take away their No. 7 pick in 2012. Some of you will ask what difference that makes. In theory, a future draft pick is less valuable than a current one because the team gets the potential benefit of an additional player for the upcoming season.

The previously-enforced swap in the fifth round, which left the Lions picking at No. 154 overall instead of No. 140, remains intact.

More after the jump.

Few positions evoke as much interest as quarterback when it comes to the NFL Draft. With the NFL becoming a pass first league, it is no wonder that QBs have become so important. In fact, perhaps the easiest way to see which teams are still looking for a franchise QB is to look at the teams picking early in the first round. All told you could make a case that about 1/3 of the NFL is still looking for their QB.

Fortunately for the Chiefs, they have already found their guy. Matt Cassel is not another Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, but he did come in and steady the QB position. My guess is that he will be the Chiefs QB for at least 5 more years. So get used to him.

I freely admit that I went into the 2010 season with grave reservations about Cassel. The way he started the season didn’t allay those concerns. However, he had some good games and has earned the starting QB job for the Chiefs. Now we just need to give him some guys to catch the ball. But wide receiver is not the topic for this preview, it is quarterback.

The reason for this is twofold. The first reason is that Chiefs’ backup QB Brodie Croyle looked miserable in the one game he played in 2010. If he is a bad backup and has stopped progressing then it is time to cut him loose. This means that the Chiefs will be looking for a new backup QB. That is why I am previewing the quarterback position.
Adam will be covering the quarterbacks. I will be tackling the outside linebackers. There is a lot of variety of opinion out there regarding the Chiefs needs for an outside linebacker. Some folks expect the Chiefs to draft an outside linebacker in round one. Others see it as a lesser need. The difference comes down to how you evaluate Andy Studebaker. If you believe that Studebaker is a passable outside linebacker, you downgrade the need. If you believe that Studebaker is not, then outside linebacker is seen as a higher need. I tend to view Studebaker as a decent alternative, so I don’t see this as a huge need. I could be wrong, so let’s take a look at a couple of players the Chiefs may consider in the draft.
