Saturday Night Week In Review

by Chiefs

Free agency, is it going to happen?  I kinda feel screwed right now as a Chiefs fan.  I would feel better if our team was in the crapper, or if they were awesome and didn’t need a lot of help.  I think the Chiefs are in that in between phase that a lot of teams are.  What’s the word, oh yeah “transitioning” (thank you Todd!!!).  It’s depressing to me because I know that the team made strides this year, I know that they need help some more depth through free agency and the draft, but it’s like the freaking NFL came along and realized that the Chiefs didn’t have the right permits to continue building and shut the process down.  Now they are waiting and waiting for them to come, and there is extension after extension with no idea what if any progress is being made.  Cheese and crackers.

Now the review:

Patrick started out this week venting his frustration as the lead blogger and spoke on surviving the possibility of an NFL lockout, and Lyle reviewed the best and worst Chiefs draft pics from the last ten years.  Double D sized up the Chiefs offensive line, and Adam told everyone who he thought the NFL scouting combine standouts were. Jeremy finished up the week by voicing his concern of whether Dwayne Bowe could perform next year as well has he did this year.

This may be an excersise in futility, but if in fact there is a free agency, what players would you like to see the Chiefs make a move for?  I would like to see some off season trading to compliment what I hope is an excellent draft class.  Let’s keep hope alive!

this sucks, i want my football back, especially this year, the chiefs are on the verg of being a very competitive team, and there are a few holes that could be filled easily in free agency. this year there are some good players on and off the field, that won't demand a truck load of money and it is driving me crazy.

maybe the players should have to cook hotdogs and set up concessions before every game.

I have held my tongue on the whole CBA issue until now, because I wanted to hear other opinions, and I felt like I was totally alone in mine. I think the owners have every right to get 100% of the revenue and pay their employees whatever they feel is fair. Isn't that kind of the cornerstone of Capitalism? I imagine owning a small business, say a pizza place. You hire a chef, and a waitress. They are amazing employees and in fact are the reason for your shop’s success, so you pay them very well. In fact these two employees would probably be in prison or flipping burgers if you didn't give them a job. You pay them more then 10 times what any other chef or waitress makes. Now after you pay their salaries, are you telling me that what is left is not yours as the owner? That net profit should be yours to keep for yourself or to reinvest in your business as you see fit? Isn't that what This country was built on, isn‘t that the American dream? Now imagine if that ungrateful biatch of a waitress demanded that you show her all your books and profit margins, what right does she have, she is your employee , and that chef tried to force you to take extra money off the top of your profit to reinvest in their futures, despite how much they got paid in comparison to say a worker at Pizza Hut (the USFL, Arena League etc). I just don't understand how it is greed on the part of the owners, it is very common business, it just happens to involve a shit ton more money than most (it is not the owners fault the business is so good, in fact that is probably why they bought the team and invested as much as they did, because they are smart and knew they would make money). Reading comments I know that most of you think the owners are totally in the wrong, I don’t know, I just don’t see it.

I agree to some extent. A couple of things: Don't pretend you are a private industry and take tax money. Don't think you can risk 9 billion plus per year in GNP without someone taking notice. Don't think that if you tell your employees that you are losing money and have to reduce their share of profits by 33% that they won't ask to see proof (it wouldn't be my right to know but I would still ask) Don't think that this won't happen when you deal with a union as an employer. If you owned the pizza shop and told your employees that you were not only going to cut their salary by 33% but also extend your hours you shouldn't expect for them to be happy about it and expect a harsh reaction. In the end the owners have the right to do whatever they want with their business and they will. They risk not having top shelf talent (I could play basketball or baseball and with no salary cap) and overall degrade their product by doing so. If you don't believe this will affect the the league, go to a Royals game and see what happens when you don't pay for top talent. I may be on the other side here, but I want to thank you for your opinion. Although I may not agree, I feel you make very valid and strong points and I thank you for sharing them. My dad and I just had exact same conversation last night (it was his friends steakhouse not a pizzeria) And I see that side of the argument but feel that this situation is different enough to disagree.

Despite what I wrote I am not pro owners, I am just extremely sick of hearing so much support of the players. Just because they may be asking for less money then the owners are doesn't mean they are any less greedy. NFL owners get paid huge, just like most CEOs do. NFL players get paid at a level that compares to nothing else for what they do, they get a king's ransom for playing a kid's game. You make a good point about tax money, however in the last few years I think their are a ton of private businesses that took corporate bailouts (tax money) and are still considered private business, and at least with the NFL they let the people vote for it, when a car company wants money we have no say at all. Finally I also want to point out the players greed in the fact that so many of them exploit their NFL stardom for private gain in the form of endorsement deals. Endorsements are at a level that they have never been before, and top teir players are getting extra compensation because of their relationship to the NFL. Before you try and say that the NFL has no right to pay their employees less because of external compensation, ask yourself why does the food industry? Even more the federal government condones it by allowing restaurants to pay staff below minimum wage, because tips paid to them make up their salary. Without the NFL Peyton Manning would never hock another Oreo or HD Television, he gets millions on top of his insane salary. Bottom line I just want this resolved and I want football to start now!!!! However, I wouldn't care one bit if the owners got everything they wanted in the process.
