“This is more of a dire need,” Gates said, according to the paper. “Considering how important this game is and what this mean to our whole season I’d like to [say] that, speaking in the third person, Antonio Gates will play. Something would have to really, really be hurting for me to not go.”
Jackson was on the field just two plays against the Colts before pulling up. He has not practiced since and there was little optimism as late as Wednesday that Jackson would be good to go against the Chiefs.
“If I’m available and I’m healthy, of course, I’m going to give it everything I got,” Jackson said.
Both Jackson and head coach Norv Turner said how Jackson feels Friday will say a lot about whether he actually plays Sunday.
“I think it is a process,” said Chargers head coach Norv Turner. “I think if you look back, (Chiefs running star Jamaal) Charles had a big fumble against us last year. He is a young back, and it is something that you learn through experience.
“I think our guys have. I think (Mike) Tolbert has made that move. I think he has a lot better understanding of the responsibility you have when you have that ball in your hands. I believe that as we’ve gone, Ryan (Mathews) has made great progress with it.”
