Checking Up On Eric Berry’s Rookie Campaign

by Chiefs

Here is some food for thought before the evening ends.

Back on August 10, 2010 I posted some rookie safety stats in order to gauge just how well Eric Berry has to be in order to have a decent rookie campaign. Here they are again:

Ed Reed; Year 2002, 16 games, 85 Tackles, 1 Sack, 5 Interceptions

Kerry Rhodes; Year 2005, 16 Games, 85 Tackles, 1 Sack, 1 Interception

Sean Taylor; Year 2004, 15 Games, 60 Tackles, 1 Sack, 4 Interceptions

Troy Palomalu; Year 2003, 16 Games, 38 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 0 Interceptions

Donte Whitner; Year 2006, 15 Games, 37 Tackles, 0 Sacks, 1 Interception

Adrian Wilson; Year 2001, 16 Games, 32 Tackles. 0.5 Sacks, 2 Interceptions

Brandon Meriweather; Year 2001, 32 Tackles, 0 sacks, 0 interceptions

Jarrad Page, Year 2006, 16 Games 30 tackles, 1 Sack, 3 Interceptions

Jon McGraw, Year 2002, 15 Games, 30 Tackles, 0 Sacks, 1 interception

Bob Sanders; Year 2004, 6 Games, 29 Tackles, 0 Sacks, 0 Interceptions

Antrel Rolle, Year 2005, 5 Games, 28 Tackles, 0 Sacks, 1 Interception

OJ Otogwe; Year 2005, 12 Games, 11 Tackles, 1 Sack, 1 Interceptions

Bernard Pollard, Year 2006, 16 Games, 10 Tackles, 0 Sacks, 0 interceptions

We are eight (8) games into the season and here are his current stats:

8 games 45 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 2 interceptions 1 FF

I don’t know about you, but I’m impressed.  Once he gets better in pass protection, this guy is going to be one of the best safeties, if not the best, in the entire league.  How can you not root for this guy?  Have a good night.

AND, he makes everybody else around him more productive. That's a stat we just won't know, but it sure would be interesting if it could be quantatatively (sp) evaluted.

i get super excited when Berry makes any play. Next to JC and Flowers. Berry is one of my favorite players. Btw: this is my first blog post. Ive been following AA since i discovered it last year. I check it daily. Glad to be apart of Fanside. GO CHIEFS

I'm not worried about Eric Berry. Nuff said!

I don't know how much significance to put on such statistics. My recollection is that Palomalu was very good his first year, but yet his stats seem mediocre. And I also think some pretty mediocre safeties accumulate some good numbers on tackles and interceptions. I think Berry almost certainly will become a good safety, but he really has made very damaging mistakes this year, culminating yesterday in the penalty that brought back our TD (I know some people say his penalty was necessary to spring Arenas) and the blown assignment on the Raider TD kick return. He also has been beat bad in the end zone and in some other big plays.

Dont forget Jarius Byrd the kid who went to high school in missouri who plays for Buffalo now. He rang up nine interceptions his rookie year last year.

Hm on pace for 90 Tackles, 4 Sacks, 4 interceptions and 2 FF... I can live with that. It would make him one of our most productive first round picks in years.

Physically this guy is an A+. Work ethic and attitude, he's an A++. Yes he is making mental mistakes out there, but you can tell by how he talks in interviews, he has a good head on his shoulders so I expect him to learn and improve. This guy is going to be a monster and is quickly becoming my favorite Chief.

That is encouraging. How do his stats match up to Nate Allen so far?
