My Chief Concerns: If You Can’t Be With The One You Love, Love The One You’re With

by My Chief Concerns

Tony Gonzalez is the greatest tight end to ever play the game.  That is a fact.  No one can dispute it.  We have loved Gonzo for so long that it seems unusual to not have him around. As Chief fans we will always adore him, but it is absolutely ok to move on.

It cannot be ignored any longer.  There is a new Tony in town and he is quite promising.  Despite what some of you might think it is not blasphemy to point out the following:

Tony Moeaki is on pace to shatter Tony Gonzalez’s rookies stats.

More after the jump…

Tony Gonzalez’ Rookie Year after the first 6 games games:

7 receptions, 110 yards, 1 TDs.

Tony Moeaki’s Rookie Year after the first 6 games:

21 receptions, 236 yards, 2 TDs

In fact, in Tony Gonzalez’s Rookie Year, (1997), he played in16 games, had 33 catches, had 368 receiving yards, and two (2) total touchdowns.  So, far Tony Moeaki has already reached two (2) total touchdowns for the season, is twelve (12) catches shy of Gonzo’s 33 receptions, and is only 136 yards away from breaking Gonzo’s rookie receiving record; with ten (10) more games to play.  Tony Moeaki is currently on pace for 56 catches, 629 yards, and 5 TDs.  Does anyone here think he won’t make it?

Leave your Gonzo Guilt at the door.  It is time to move on from our beloved “Gonzo” and embrace, encourage and adore the “Big Moe”.

Moeaki needs a nickname.  Let’s hear your suggestions, Addicts.  Is “Big Moe” good or do you have something better?

Nicknames? I don't think he has established an identity yet with this team. For now, he is a rookie with a ton of upside. I don't mind calling him "Jr." or "Kid" for the time being. It's a term of endearment. After that, if his career goes in the direction we think it will, I'm sure we will find something to call him by. He seems like a good guy and he comes from a decent Big Ten program, the Iowa Hawkeyes. He is sure to fit in nicely. If I remember correctly, Gonzo did not become Gonzo until his 3rd year or so. That's when we really saw a guy capable of being the very best at his position in a very long time. After years of playing at a high level, we now know he is indeed the best of all time. Indeed, he is arguably the best player to have ever worn the Red and Gold at this point. He is definitely in the top five Chiefs of all time.

yeah I like Moeaki (they pronounce his name inconsistently at Arrowhead by the way).

The thing about these stats though is that back then the Chiefs were notorious for taking it slow with rookies. Tony G back up Ted Popson his rookie year. Moeaki has no such restrictions on him. We need him now, so he's used more than Gonzalez was. But yeah, Moeaki looks really good. Great pick.

Id love to have Tony back in a Vrabel style teaching playing role.

If Mr Moeaki stays healthy, we're going to have another great TE for years to come. . . . however, I really hope Tony G comes back, at least for that one day contract to retire as a Chief

sorry, but Tony G would not have the stats and the place in NFL history he has now had he not spent 20 years with the Chiefs.

I would just like to say that he is going to be the next Gonzo and the fact that Gonzo was a chief and not Moeaki is a chief is ironic and I love it! I think Tony Moeaki's nickname should be "The Moeaki Masterpiece" due the the fact that KC is known for barbeque and the KC Masterpiece is great and Tony is definitely the KC Masterpiece!!!!!

Tony Moeaki is not even a candidate for Pro bowl voting right now, but Pope is. Pro bowl is a bunch of crap. Oh and Shaun Smith is not listed on the ballot for DEs either. go to nfl.com and vote

Can't ignore how well Moeaki is playing. I believe he has the tools to be as good as Gonzo.

I love "Big Moe." I think there could possibly be a better nickname out there, but Big Moe is good enough for me for now.

I dont think it is wrong to love another tony! the way I see it Tony G divorced me.Tony G was one of my fist loves! you will always care about your first but you have to embrace the new. and y would i be upset that my new love is possibly going to be as good as my first!

Sorry for the technical problems this morning folks, we are working on it.
