My Chief Concerns: Using a Hybrid 3-4 Defense

facebooktwitterreddit

Pat brought up an excellent point (again) that I wish to expand upon.  It is obvious that we do not have a true 3-4 nose tackle to run the defense.  It is also painfully obvious that we will have problems stopping the run this year.  With no true 3-4 NT, and plenty of 4-3 lineman (top picks I might add) why don’t we just run the 4-3 on first and second downs?  Like Paddy said, stick Dorsey and Jackson inside, Hali on the outside with Gilberry.  When an obvious passing situation comes up, move back to the 3-4.

Haley has consistently said, (along with all other coaches morphing to a 3-4 defense), that with the 3-4 defense you do not know where the pressure is coming from.  That is just great. Right?  But, isn’t he, (aren’t they), specifically talking about passing downs.

If the defenses are running straight up our gut on first down, al la Michael Turner, let’s put two big men in the middle and make their gap assignments easier.

We have to start playing to our strengths.  Shouldn’t this be the way? I’m just saying.
