The Morning Fix

by Chiefs

The NFL preseason is not a time to bet on whether your team will win, it is a time to see how efficient your favorite team’s coaching staff really is.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs both want to improve on their performances last season, and they would both like to be a little more prominent in the NFL football betting activity that will be going on this season. Both the Chiefs and the Buccaneers lost in their preseason openers last week, but they lost to good teams.

The Bucs lost the battle of Florida to a much-improved Miami Dolphins team, and the Chiefs lost to a team that could be this year’s NFC champions in the Atlanta Falcons. While the football world is betting on college football right now, the Chiefs and the Bucs are trying to find the players on their rosters that will help each team win in 2010.

Of course, that tremendous athletic ability hasn’t gone anywhere. Bowe is still a freak. The question is whether or not he’s learned anything about being a professional. It wasn’t a particularly good sign this spring when Bowe made headlines for talking about teammates “importing” women to hotels on the road. That said, in place of last summer’s stories about how irritated Haley was with Bowe for showing up at camp at around 240 pounds, this summer all we’ve read regarding Bowe is how he participated in Larry Fitzgerald’s hellish wideout camp and arrived with the Kansas City Chiefs weighing 210. I’m not necessarily buying that, but it’s at least refreshing to know the Chiefs’ No. 1 wideout isn’t starting the year in his head coach’s bad graces.

I’ve returned from the Kansas City Chiefs night practice. Since it’s late and I’m tired and you’re likely tired as well, I’ll have the full report in the morning.

For now, here’s a quick recap of the basics:

* There were about 3,500 folks in attendance. The previous night practice had about 8,000 while the scrimmage had over 10,000.
* Not participating: Brodie Croyle, Kestahn Moore, Darryl Harris and Jon McGraw.
* Casey Wiegmann saw time as the first team center.
* First team nickel linebackers: OLBs Tamba Hali and Cameron Sheffield, ILBs Mike Vrabel and Derrick Johnson. Andy Studebaker had been in Sheffield’s spot in previous practices.
* Matt Cassel hit Tony Moeaki’s outstretched hands with defenders surrounding him on a deep route down the middle of the field that might have been for six in a real game.

Bob Moore has always been a history buff.

The Overland Park resident, who spent 21 seasons as director of public relations for the Kansas City Chiefs, has now made that passion his work. Earlier this year, Moore was asked by the Hunt family, owners of the Chiefs, to take on a new position, that of team historian and curator of the Hall of Honor housed in the renovated Arrowhead Stadium.

“The Chiefs and I knew what Lamar (Hunt) wanted and he knew of my interest,” Moore said. “I’d been doing some of this type of work prior, but given my place in life, it was time to do this full time,” said Moore, who’s 63. “This is something I always liked about the team — its background and history.”

“Bob’s experience and passion for Chiefs history and history in general made him well qualified for this role,” said Chiefs President Denny Thum.

The Bucs were ranked 25th last season in rushing and 32nd against the run. The Chiefs were ranked 11th in rushing and 31st against the run. If the Chiefs can't run and/or can't stop the run against the Bucs, we frankly are in a bigger world of hurt than any of us could have ever imagined.
