The Morning Fix

by The Morning Fix

Morning Addicts. Today is day 3 of training camp. The Chiefs will practice just once today starting at 1:50 PM (CST). If any of you are going to be at the practice and would like to help us out by providing updates or pictures or both, please email me at [email protected]

Also remember we are still accepting t-shirt designs until around midweek. We’ve received a couple of good ones already. If you are at all talented in that area we’d love to see what you’ve got. You would be granted the distinction of being the Arrowhead Addict t-shirt designer. Who wouldn’t want that mantle?

We’ll have another practice report for you later today as well as another post in our series honoring Oakland Raiders fans.

Until then, here is your Morning Fix!

As fads in the world of pro football come and go, the Wildcat has come and it’s making a slow exit out of the NFL. It’s unlikely to ever be gone completely, given the fact that plays where somebody other than the quarterback handles the ball or throws a pass have been part of the game for a hundred years.

While the Chiefs used a good portion of their Saturday morning practice working on plays from the Wildcat formation, it wasn’t because having the quarterback split wide and another player receiving the snap is going to be a regular part of the Kansas City offense.

Not with Todd Haley as head coach and Charlie Weis as offensive coordinator.

“We did a lot of work on all these players and we drafted them for a reason,” said coach Todd Haley, talking about the rookie class and refusing to be drawn into a specific discussion on Berry.

Berry, the Chiefs’ first-round draft pick, agreed to contract terms Friday, but not in time to arrive at camp for the first practice. He moved right into the starting lineup Saturday at safety alongside Jon McGraw.

Berry appeared embarrassed by his late arrival to camp and bothered by the fact he missed a single practice. Thus the apology to his teammates.

“I told them that I’m here and I’m ready to do whatever to help this organization get to where it needs to be,” Berry said. “(An on-time camp arrival) would have been a great statement to my teammates to show them how dedicated I am to the team.

The Chiefs hit the field for their third practice in 24 hours Saturday afternoon. That’s what training camp is all about. A lot of practice, a lot of quick recovery and then some more practice.

“I told the players that there’s not a lot of light at the end of the tunnel right now,” said head coach Todd Haley. “Their heads are down, their noses are on the grindstone and they are trying to get a little bit better each day.”

Whether or not the Chiefs got better Saturday afternoon is something only the coaches can judge. But from observation it was the poorest of the three sessions so far in the ’10 camp.

That’s to be expected given the amount of football in such a short period of time, with the weather conditions – hot and muggy. It’s the kind of football weather that Haley loves.

“The players probably hate me, but I like the weather,” Haley said. “It’s hot, it’s sticky, it’s miserable. It means training camp. It means everybody’s a little ornery, mad, a little nasty. Those are all good things.”

Training Camp Practice #3 Report-BobGretz.com

Chiefs receiver Dexter McCluster is having a good start to his NFL career, even if it’s only three months old and he hasn’t played a game yet. He moved pretty well at the Chiefs facility over the offseason and he’s just as impressive in the first two days of training camp.

On the first day of camp, McCluster was running a route across the middle and stopped short when Kendrick Lewis came running at him full steam. In a real game, it would’ve been quite a collision. McCluster and Lewis were roommates at Ole Miss but McCluster said there wasn’t any trash talking going on between them.

“That was a close one,” McCluster said after practice this afternoon. “I gotta get him back for that one. I guess he wanted to get me back from OTAs earlier in the offseason but we’re going to have a friendly competition.”

Add this to the comments: Our defense needs to see the "widcat"-we were working both sides of the football-like the quotes from the head coach and the friendly competition was right on-both sides need to push each other so the team gets better.

I know people are thinking McCluster will be the primary wild-cat back...but that's not the case. There is only 1 team that has run the wildcat successfully and that is the dolphins. Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are big enough to take the ball inside and quick enough to bounce it to the outside. We have a tough inside runner (Jones) and a very quick outside runner (Charles). However, we don't have one of those backs that have a combination of size and speed. Don't get me wrong, the wildcat will be used sparingly, but it can't be used consistently with out personnel.

Hey Pat. What's wrong with the "arrowhead addict arrow at the top of the page? Accompany that with "your #1 K.C. Chiefs Blog! or something like that.

We actually do have a design that incorporates the Arrowhead guy at the top. We are actually going to start calling him "Fiendy"

He reminds me of a Battle Top, then again, I am dating myself.

I wouldn't expect the wildcat to be our number 1 resort...that's what the dolphins do...but to run it from here to there once in a while is good enough...we have the weapon's to run it good 2... so I say use it..
