The Morning Fix

by The Morning Fix

The Chiefs’ first training camp in Missouri in 20 years will look much like last year’s in Wisconsin.

Their practice schedule is nearly identical. Coach Todd Haley intends for the Chiefs to be outside for each workout, as they were in the cooler climate up north.

Haley has no plans to make concessions for the heat that will undoubtedly greet the Chiefs today for their arrival at the new summer home in St. Joseph. Their first practice is 1:50 p.m. Friday at Missouri Western State University.

The Chiefs would occasionally over the years lose a player or two temporarily to the heat when they trained in Wisconsin. The greater chance of that in a Missouri summer hasn’t deterred Haley.

“I’m no more concerned about that than I’ve ever been,” Haley said. “Players have to take care of themselves. They have to hydrate. They have to hit the cold tub. They have to do the things necessary to get through training camp practices. That’s always a difficult task no matter where you are.

The trek to St. Joe begins on the road, where any construction has been finished.

“We got it all done early and so there should not be much construction, at all, unless MODOT decides to do something on I-29 but I don’t think they will,” St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau spokeswoman Marci Bennett said. “I think they have all that taken care of. It should be easy access.”

Once fans arrive on the campus of Missouri Western University, they will need to find a place to park. There is plenty of free parking, but it’s a bit of a walk to the field. For $10, fans can have premium parking that will put them much closer to the practice area. Team and university officials remind people to not park in the volunteer or Chiefs team parking area.

If those fans who come to St. Joseph for camp need to stay overnight, Bennett said the city’s hotels are ready.

“There are plenty of rooms, and we would love for them to stay,” Bennett said. “All of the tennis and softball will be done after this weekend, and there are plenty of rooms.”

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed second round draft choices Dexter McCluster and Javier Arenas.

Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

McCluster was the 36th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft out of Mississippi, where he finished second on the school’s all-time all-purpose yardage list (4,089) behind only Deuce McAllister.

He left as the seventh leading rusher in Rebels’ history with 1,955 yards, including 1,169 last season, which was also the second highest single season total in school history.

In 2009, he became the first player in Southeastern Conference history to run for 1,000 yards and collect 500 yards (520) receiving in the same season.
