The Morning Fix

Offense:

It’s Matt Cassel’s second year under center and it’s been a lot more sobering experience than riding the pine behind Tom Brady or filling in from time to time. From the Chiefs’ vantage point Cassel has been a disappointment. Jamal Charles looks to be the real deal at Running back and the pick up of Thomas Jones looks to be a solid one. At Wide Receiver Dawyne Bowe has shown flashes but nothing consistent and Chris Chambers was a nice mid season pick up last year. I liked the Dexter McCluster pick in the draft and he adds a new dimension to the offense as he’s much like Percy Harvin in Minnesota. KC picked up two offensive Linemen in free agency, Casey Wegman and Ryan Lilja and picked up Jon Asamoah in the draft but this line just isn’t very good.

Chiefs Hall of Fame Willie Lanier remembered how Lamar Hunt went the extra mile for him.

So accepting the Lamar Hunt Lifetime Achievement Award at the Kansas City Sports Commission’s 38th annual Sport KC Props ceremony on Wednesday night was as meaningful as any honor Lanier recalls receiving.

And that’s saying something, considering Lanier, a standout on the Chiefs’ Super Bowl IV champions, was selected NFL Man of the Year in 1972 and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986.

“He was one of the special people in my life,” Lanier said. “One thing I did in Richmond (Va.) for many years was a scholarship fund. This was in 1990, and Lamar said he would come to Richmond and be the guest speaker.

If I had to choose a book to describe what the year 2010 has looked like so far for the Chiefs, I’d pick the Three Musketeers.

To this point, I’ve already seen Athos (represented in the savvy manner which the Front Office has approached the off-season), Porthos (embodied in the guts necessary to make some unpopular decisions – aside from Eric Berry — in the Draft), and Aramis (symbolized by the attitude displayed in the near-pristine attendance mark in June’s minicamp).

What’s the only missing element in this tale? That would be D’Artagnan (performance on the field). What’s the good news? That he’s within sight.

ou know in all fairness to Cassel, as a team we did have the most drops in the league!! After the McCluster pick I was a little puzzled but after I found out he was going to be a slot receiver I started getting excited. He will for sure be a huge asset for the chiefs as he appears to have GREAT hands! I think this year we will have a MUCH more balanced offense where opposing teams will have trouble preparing for us!

It was so miserable to sit in the stands and watch the quarterback musical chairs a couple of years back. It was different in 09 , completely different. Matt has shown vast improvement already, we have our franchise Q) folks

Remember that guy they put in during the Raiders game in 08? What the hell was his name? He was like a receiver or something.

TO BE HONEST WITH YOU I WASNT TO HIGH ON CASSELL WHEN WE TRADED FOR....I MEAN THE GUY NEVER STARTED IN COLLEGE AND DIDNT GET TO PLAY UNTIL BRADY GOT HURT....HE DID LOOK GOOD BUT I WOULD LOOK GOOD THROWING TO RANDY MOSS AND WES WELKER, I WILL ADMIT THAT I DO BELIEVE CASSELL HAS THE TALENT TO BE A DAMN GOOD QB AND I THINK HE WILL STEP IT UP THIS YEAR AND PUT UP SOME BIG NUMBERS

Chieffreak23: Thanks for the comment but turn off the caps lock. ;) Don't want people to think you are yelling at them. I agree, I think Cassel will improve this season.

Hello, you got to play to win the game.Matt did the best he could with what he had to work with.It doesnt help matters when the recievers cant hang on to the ball either.I think he is going to be a very good Quarterback,he needs some protection.

I will have more on Cassel later. I agree with you though.

MATT IS NOT A DISAPPOINTMENT! he goes from all the protection he could ever want to none and gets hurt first reason outing, almost the first play. Matt will earn his Bacon.

Randy, I could not agree with you more! Jesus(anyone for that matter) could have been put behind that line and ended up uninjured and unable to get the ball in the right direction. With the help he has received to date, there is no reason this season will not show progress.

You can rise from the dead but you can't complete 5 passes in a row behind the 2009 Chiefs offensive line.
