Happy Memorial Day everyone! I hope you all enjoy a nice day full of grilling and beer drinking. As today is about remembering the men and women who defended our freedom, let e be the first of the Addicts to give my thanks. I know there are a few of our regular readers and comenters that serve and I hope what we do here at AA gives you a little taste of home when you are away fighting for us.

Please take the time to remember those men and women as you go about your day and feel free to give thanks in the comments of this thread.

Q: With the great draft class and players they have added in free agency, why isn’t Kansas City getting any talk of being a much improved team. Is there no shot to be better than the Raiders, Broncos or Chargers?

A: The Chiefs are still a draft or two away from respectability. I think they are good enough to get to six wins this season. Maybe they can catch a break and get to seven. What’s holding them back is the run-after-catch ability of their receivers. Matt Cassel is an efficient quarterback, but he doesn’t have a strong arm. The offensive line should be a little better, and the defense is starting to shape up. During Herm Edwards’ last couple of years, the team got too old and the talent dropped off too far. At least the Chiefs are making progress.

The Morning Fix: Afternoon Edition

We’ve talked about the battles waging for roster slots in the defensive backfield – 15 players in total, many of who play multiple positions. It looks wide open.

We’ve also talked about the positioning for playing time amongst the wide receivers, particularly out of the slot position. Add the tight ends, centers and inside linebackers to the list as well.

Truth is, there are far more positions on this team classified as “up for grabs” rather than “safe” at the moment. While many of the positional battles mentioned above will be both well followed and well documented throughout the rest of spring and into summer, there are other positional battles lurking in the shadows that have generally gone overlooked. These are the battles that aren’t for starting positions, but that will go a long way in determining the final few roster slots on this football team.
