OTA Practice Report

The Chiefs hit the field for their 4th OTA practice of the offseason today. Josh Looney has a nice overview of what went down over at KCCHiefs.com

It sounds like the offense came out a little sluggish on what turned out to be a warm day. According to Looney, the defense was getting the better of them until late in the practice when the offense seemed to come around. While we can’t really take too much from the 4th practice in shorts and helmets, it is encouraging to see the offense showing a little fight. The unit was dominated most of last year and defense almost always has the upper hand in early practices. It is good to see the offense bouncing back in one practice. Hopefully they will be able to lock in to a rhythm and stay there.

One interesting piece of news was that Eric Berry took snaps with the starters for the first time today, replacing Reshard Langford. Though coach Todd Haley was quick to mention that no one should take too much stock in how the Chiefs are lining up this early in the process.

“I wouldn’t put too much stake at where guys are right now and that goes for everyone across the board,” Haley said. “We are really in the feeling out process. Some of it has to do with trying to get guys more reps and for others, it has to do with the reward of good weeks and bad weeks. I think that we just want to put players in different positions and see how they respond.”

There may be some truth to what Haley said but have no illusions, Eric Berry will be a starter come Week 1 and the more reps he can get with the first team, the better.

Also on the safety front, 2nd year man, Donal Washington was again taking snaps as a safety. Washington was drafted as a CB out of Ohio State but saw action at Safety late last season due to injuries. With CB being a position of depth for the Chiefs, they may have decided Washington’s athleticism will better suit them as depth at safety.

Lastly, as we told you earlier, Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop booted a 65 yard FG with the wind at his back and with no rush. Still, 65 yards…pretty amazing.

We’ll have more later when Bob Gretz posts his recap of the day’s events. Gretz always has some interesting replays of individual plays so make sure you check back in a bit.
