My Chief Concerns: It’s Simple; Draft For Need

by Chiefs

Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.  ~Confucius

With regards to our first couple of picks, I have been thinking, over thinking, flipping and flopping back and forth over the selection.  I have been overanalyzing it to the extreme, and that seems to be the problem.

Without simplifying the process too much, wouldn’t you all agree that most draft picks are based upon two things:  need and best player available?

If those are the two criteria which are most important when considering a draft pick, can’t we safely assume that the Chiefs will not be taking the best player available, but selecting solely upon need with the first three picks?

Some teams have the luxury of being so stacked at most positions that they can draft the best player available. The “best player available theory” provides depth, but the Chiefs need starters at many positions, not depth.  Let’s face it, our Kansas City Chiefs absolutely do not have starting quality players at NT, ILB, FS, SS, C, TE, FB, and KR/PR (that is 8 positions and we only have 8 picks).  Does anyone disagree with that?  As such, if our Chiefs do not address those positions early in the draft they are doing so at the expense of our team.

The Chiefs are full of holes, especially on defense.  We already have “good to great to developing starters” at WR, QB, OL, RB, CB and DE.  It is nice to have depth at those positions, (any position really), but not at the expense of other starting positions with less talent.

To me the draft comes down to these incredibly simple questions:

If the Chiefs draft a QB, OL, RB, CB, or DE (not positions of need) with one of their first three picks, will the Chiefs be an better team than just prior to the draft?

Or,

If the Chiefs draft a NT, ILB, FS, SS, C, TE, FB, and KR/PR (all positions of need) with one of their first three picks, will the Chiefs be a better team than just prior to the draft?

To me it is a no brainer, drafting a QB, OL, RB, CB or DE does not make us an instantly better team.  It may provide more depth and quality, but it does not solidify the starting roster.    If the Chiefs choose one of those positions with the first pick they have missed a wonderful opportunity to coalesce the roster.

Therefore, Eric Berry, Rolando McClain or Dan Williams should be the choices for the Chiefs at number five.  Such a pick makes us instantly better because we need top talent at their respective positions.  Our second round picks have to address the other areas of need not addressed by the first pick.  It is so simple it is embarrassing.   Am I wrong?

Pioli will trade down if O'Kung is gone. The Pioli way and the Patriots way, whose to argue with that. Seattle would be perfect they have 2 Ist round picks, trade down with them and grab another 2nd rounder, or even a third then trade one of our third round picks back into the second or? Lots of possibilities. I will be happy with anything but a DRASTIC reach. San Fran is another possibility. 88% chance Pioli trades down.

I agree with your assessment. Use your position in the draft to fill glaring needs. From what I've read, the top safety or linebacker is too good to ignore vs the tackle position. Select a tackle in Rd 2. Plus, it makes no sense to me to trade down and reward another team with a top 5 pick just to get another 3rd or 4th pick. The Chiefs new strong young talent, not 3 - 4 special teams picks.

JT thanks for the backup. Apparently we are the only ones that feel the same way about the guy. I missed the coaching thing. Should have made that point too.

Heck ya go chiefs im from Clovis New Mexico and we get like 2 or 3 chiefs games a year its all cowboys and donkeys crap here but i myself became a Chiefs fan because my whole family are cowboys fans why because they like to win i would guess well so do i and i would love to see the Red and Gold back in the playoffs by next season if WEvdont go 8-8 atleast Haley will major questions to answer no more 2-14 4-12 seasons in arrowhead we have enough talent now most starters are in there 2nd of the system FULL offseasons they know what to expect Jones Charles Bowe Chambers Cassell and with the Lilja and Weigmann pickups we have mid league to top 10 or 15 lines in the league its time for Page to resign and him and Flowers need to step up the secondary play and stay healthy and if we go with a D lineman in the 1st round it would be craziness 3 years in a row with d lineman i dont see it happening trade down Pioli please LET ME KNOW WHAT U THINK PPL

I love the idea of us taking Tate, he's destined to be a star with a name like that, plus he seems like a person of good moral fiber. As far as Page goes, he's had 4 seasons to show us something, and my only memories of him is making game saving interceptions againt Oakland a few times, and even picked Manning in the 06' playoff game if memory serves me correct. I must say though, although he ha had 4 years to prove himself, I think we can blame a lot of his shortcomings at Safety on the terrible coaching staff he has dealt with his entire career. Maybe Pollard went on to thrive becausehe played for a decent coaching staff, Herm brought in a bunch of has-beens to coach our positions. That being sad, I'd like to see Pae play under a Romo Crennel defense, who knows what he could be capable of?We still need to draft a safety, but Page deserves the benefit of the doubt. No pass rush= makes secondary look awful, i don't care if we've got Ronnie Lott and Polamalu back there, without a pass rush, you'll get torched, which is what has been happening to us a lot. I saygive Page a chance. I also say GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First off i beleive we are gonna resign jarrad page and corey mays so thats 2 needs gone and why do the chiefs need a NT so bad Ron Edwards Gilllberry and this new guy smith can hang till next year i say We need WR in round 2 or 3 Tate maybe ?

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!! OK. Did I get my point across yet? We ABSOLUTELY do NOT need BOTH safety positions filled. Until he got hurt Jarrod Page was phenomenal for the Defense! Why are you guys trying to get rid of him by drafting another "young stud" safety. We have one. YES, we can use another, but that is only because of the moronic decision to release Pollard, who, did DAMN good at Houston when he left here. Could we use some depth, MAYBE. I personally think DaJuan Morgan will be a good player if given half a chance now that Pollard is gone. If we add a safety in this draft as a backup to McGraw, Page and Morgan, I am ok with that as long as it is NOT the first three of our picks. We need dedicated and STARTING NT, LB, OL and WR help. Those should ABSOLUTELY be the first positions drafted by this team. Anything else is a luxury and we are shooting ourselves in the foot for taking any other position. Sorry, but this idea of Page not being good enough for you guys REALLY ticks me off. He has shown more flashes of brilliance in his short career than DJ or Studebaker, but yet you guys keep wanting them in the game. Give me a break this is getting really stupid and ridiculous.

Mike
I absolutely love the passion. Page does show flashes of brilliance.

I beg to differ with you though. Page is inconsistent and takes bad angles. 2009 was a very down year for the young free safety. His season was cut short by injury and at one point he lost his starting job to Jon McGraw (He was a healthy scratch against the Chargers). So apparently he was in someone’s dog house for whatever reason. (There were rumors that Haley was unhappy with the fact that Page was “doggin it” or would not play through injury, actually Haley said so after the Chargers game when speaking about Jon McGraw starting the Chargers game. Page may have even been placed on IR as a result. It is a safe assumption considering he was listed as a healthy scratch and then on IR soon thereafter).

In any event, Jarrad Page has shown some glimpses of greatness (ie.. against the Raiders) and some glimpses of badness (ie… missing tackles, blowing coverage, being out of position.) He has been the starting FS on a team that has ranked next to dead last in the NFL for his entire stay in Kansas City. Which leads me to my conclusion that we need better starters at FS and SS.

Dujuan Morgan has showed me nothing. I have an open mind though.

Are you crazy!? Page a phenomenal player. He's below average at bet. Constantly out of position. Always missing tackles. We need two safety's. I think we should only spend one pick however. Nate Allen or Chad Jones in the 2nd. Even picking up Myron Rolle would be ok. But to think Jarred Page is better than below average is crazy. What the game tapes. We've seen this for 3 yrs. Pollard and Page missing tackles and blowing coverage. Flowers is the only good player we have on the secondary. Carr is average. Pollard did better at Houston, bc why? Who knows better Dbacks coach. Better D cooridator... who knows maybe he finally had fire lit under his butt and played to his potential. But he stunk while he was here. The fact is even when Page and Pollard were here, our passing D sucked! We need a NT, ILB SS, FS, OL and WR.... Probably won't hit on all these positions in the draft but we might.

"...Page a phenomenal player for the defense..." LOL you've got to be kidding! Have you been watching the Chiefs games the past 3 yrs?

Ok, so let's just release him, draft to guys and I GUARANTEE we will regret it like we have regretted letting Pollard go! And has anyone maybe thought Page seemed out of position so many times is because someone else was out of position and he was trying to cover for them. I do agree the IR thing was a little fishy to me. Who knows, maybe Haley's ego will see Page released or traded like Pollard. Then again, if the guy gets put on IR for a hang-nail then yes, get rid of him. I still say if the front seven actually DO THEIR JOB, the back four will start looking a LOT better.

This Berrymania needs to stop. It amuses me me the way some of the site writers(well, all of them) runninf this site will make a statement like "love your passion, but", and then basically push THEIR opinion down your throat! Berry will not be our pick, final write it in stone, and get ready to cry! First, a safety (any safety) wil not has not nor will ever equate to winning a team 2-3 extra games a year- I didn't say can't contribute too I SAID EQUATE, or acyually be the direct difference. AN O-lineman busting a hole for a game winning touchdown, or holding a block an extra second CAN equate to an extra win or two. Or how about a good to great Wide receiver catching a few more TD's In equating for a few more wins. Picking Berry at this time with this defense would be the same thing as Drafting Joe Montana with a high shool level O_Line, you just don't WASTE the pick. The Berry Band wagon is being pulled by so called experts that think he is just what the CHiefs need. They don't have a clue about the Chiefs, bu the loyal fans here jumped on the band wagon just because it was the sexy thing to do. We need a safety no doubt, you don't pay Berry or any safety #5 pick money in todays' NFL. Pioli has more sense than that. Build from the trenches out-get a NT WR LB and A DB along the way. They may go crazy and draft Clausen and Golden Tate both, Id rather see that then WASTE a pick and money on Eric Berry- Now let me have it Berrymaniacs and I will say I told you so on April 23.

You have to use a lot of what if's when you start choosing what your priorities are. I would suggest that you look at the Chiefs as a new expansion team with no players on the roster and you are going to pick your roster from the draft list. Put your positions in the order of what you think of most importance. Then match that list with the players on the Chiefs roster and see where the weakest positions are in the order of importance for you to build a new team. It takes away those who you have fallen in love with and makes it crystal clear that the NFL is right when they place a value on QB, LT, NT, and Rush specialists at the top of their boards and saftys and linebackers close to the bottom.

I hear you Jim, but the Chiefs aren't a new expansion team. QB and LT are secure IMO. NT, ILB, S needs to be adressed. Your reasoning is sound. I think you take an ILB or S at number five because you need them, it is unfortuante that we are picking five, and we may be reaching, but value should not dictate more than need. Doesn't/shouldn't need trump all other factors?

This draft is deep with talent, especially at the positions of need for us. Honestly, I just can't sell myself on McLain, his speed and overall toughness will hurt him at the pro level. And I'm starting to ask myself, Where would Dan williams be ranked if McCoy and Suh were not in this draft? He Probably would be a top 5-10 prospect at least IMHO. I would love to see us take Williams at #5, Taylor Mays at 2a (even if you have to trade up, and only if Earl Thomas is gone), and at 2b Donald Butler ILB Washington. If these guys fall to us, our defense is solidified. What do you guys think of these top 3?

Not a bad scenario at all JT, wouldn't bother me one bit.

I agree that we should hold off at center and I also think the TE isn't a complete wash. Have we retained Pope? Maybe Cottam won't be so bad. Who know's? My point is agree with all of the positions you have declared a need, but some are a much higher priority (ILB, FS, SS, NT). Great post Jeremy and for the most part I agree totally. It isn't rocket science.

I think that is what will happen. We will Jump down there and take Dan Williams. I think they will try there hearts out to trade down though first and get some extra picks. Lets face it if Suh is not there then it is unlikely because I don't think there are to many people that are impressed with Jimmy Clausen.

A jump down would be nice, but not likely so do you reach for Williams at five? Need says so, if you value Williams over Mcclain/Berry

I think we are fine at center. Casey is solid. We can wait till next years draft for that.
